A little over a week ago I photographed about 50 mini sessions in aid of raising funds for Friends Of Rescue, and as much as it was a ton of work we had a ball and met some amazing people over the course of the weekend. 📸 Or how a love of photos and documenting life became my job! I’m Janine, pronounced JA-neen, like Janet and Janice, which no one can say so it’s been the bane of my life for 52 years! I’ve loved photographs and memory keeping since I was a child, and I am obsessed with the everyday small things. I studied English at QUB and went on to become an English teacher, working with teenagers in a local integrated secondary school. When my second son was born, I got my first DSLR camera and photographed my kids non-stop! I started Janine Boyd Photography in 2011 as a side hustle. After Covid, I found the restrictions and pressures of education incompatible with the life I wanted for myself, so I took a career break and made the leap to being self-employed. I’ve just celebrated 2 years of working for myself and I absolutely LOVE it and the freedom it has given me and my family. I feel incredibly lucky to do something that allows me to work with amazing people and which also satisfies my need for creativity. I also take 99% of photos of me because no one else in my family ever remembers to take any 🙄 So there you have it, a potted history of Janine Boyd Photography!! Or are we a good fit? Because let’s face it, there are tons of photographers out there and if we all suited everyone it would be impossible for you to make a choice about who to work with. I am a big believer that it’s as important to know who NOT to work with as it is to know who you should work with. This might be an unpopular opinion, but when you’re running a business, popularity isn’t very high up the list of priorities. So I thought I’d share a little bit more about who I’m not for, in the hopes that you might feel reassured, or even realise you’ve made a hideous mistake and are in totally the wrong place! In a nutshell I am not for you if you: 🙅🏼♀️don’t like being silly ❌are looking for a wedding photographer 🙅🏼♀️need studio portraits ❌can’t listen to someone talking a LOT 🙅🏼♀️are interested in boudoir photography ❌would like photos of your cat/guinea pig/iguana I’m not saying this is a hard and fast list of rules I’ve set for myself, in fact, last year I photographed 4 weddings, but they were all small, bespoke events that sparked some creative possibilities. And I’m not anti-cat, I am just a dog person, and cats are even less likely to cooperate with me on a session than dogs! Ultimately, it’s about shared values, and for me it’s really important that the people I work have as much fun on a session as I do. Saying no to some jobs means I can say yes to the ones that excite me. And after 26 years working in education, that freedom in itself is worth more than I can tell you! 📸 WHY PHOTOS MATTER 📸 You’ve probably got over 10,000 of them on your phone, but have you stopped to think about why photos matter? For one thing, they preserve memories, you know the ones of the kids/dog when they were tiny and super cute?! You’ve likely got some nice orange tinted ones of yourself from way back when! And as the family archiver, I have hundreds of black and white photos of my grandparents and the family who came before them. Time capsules that preserve memories and times gone before, so important to keep those safe for the future generations. If you’re a business owner, your face is what builds trust and connection with your potential customers or clients. It’s now widely acknowledged that people buy people, so when faced with the choice of which handmade mug you’re going to buy, you’ll go for the one where the maker is known to you and a relationship has formed over time. Even if it’s just an online connection you have. So get your headshots updated and show your face! Lastly, you DESERVE to be seen and known and celebrated!! One of my favourite lines from a song is “No one can be myself like I can” (hit me up in the comments if you can identify it 🎤😂) There is only one of YOU, you are wonderfully and uniquely created to be like no one else on earth. So why wouldn’t you capture that in a photo?!! All too often we use any excuse to get out of being in the photos, but you are doing your family, your customers and yourself a huge disservice by not being present. I bought this pompom star topper last year for my festive mini sessions. Ok, I bought it for myself, but the festive sessions were the perfect excuse to buy it! And to justify it further we put it on the top of our own tree, where it is happily nestled again right now 🌟 My point here is that sometimes you just have to buy the colourful pompom thing, or whatever your version of that might be. Not in the sense of buying for the sake of buying, but more of gifting yourself what you need from time to time.
