Ho sempre dato per scontata la festa del 25 aprile, forse per superficialità o perché comunque quando ci fai l'abitudine, senti la libertà come qualcosa che non ti toglierà mai nessuno. Ho sempre dato per scontato che tutti avessero almeno un nonno o una nonna in vita, che guardandoti con occhi saggi di chi sa, dicessero: "perché sai, quando c'era la guerra, c'era la miseria." Invece mi sto rendendo conto che le generazioni che hanno vissuto almeno una delle Guerre mondiali stanno piano piano lasciando questo mondo. La seconda guerra mondiale ha lasciato segni indelebili nei nostri nonni. Pensiamoci: ognuno ha storie che, se raccontate dalle persone giuste, diventerebbero dei libri. La seconda guerra mondiale ha portato via la patria al mio nonno ucraino, ha portato mia nonna a cercare lavoro in Inghilterra, dove ha trovato il suo amore. Ma entrambi avevano uno sguardo penetrante di chi ricorda eventi potenti e non ti racconta mai del tutto cosa la guerra ha provocato. I miei nonni paterni erano esuli istriani, la guerra ha portato via loro tutto. Eppure erano sempre sorridenti, soprattutto mia nonna, nonostante gli orrori vissuti durante i bombardamenti di Pola. Ora la voglia di pace, la voglia di un mondo migliore, libero, al di là di colore e credo politico, sembra stia svanendo. Oltre alle notizie inquietanti che arrivano dal mondo, anche nella nostra quotidianità si è spezzato qualcosa. Come se si volesse dimenticare quanto un popolo, quello italiano, abbia sofferto per uscire da quel pantano violento in cui era stato trascinato da scelte e credo politici che hanno portato via la libertà e lasciato che innocenti volassero in cielo attraverso i camini dei forni crematori dei campi di concentramento. La Festa della Libertà non ha colori se non quelli della Pace e del rispetto. È questo che dobbiamo insegnare ai nostri figli. Oggi è il giorno in cui un popolo deve fare tesoro degli errori passati perché non vengano ripetuti. Un popolo unito, non un popolo diviso da discorsi che pretendono di modificare la realtà oggettiva della Storia.

Now, REMOVE those elements of your family life that aren’t delivering what would help your child/teen achieve that ideal: maybe it’s a few extracurrilcar activities that are stealing all of your child’s freetime during the week or holding off getting your tween a smartphone (even if they claim they are the only one in the entire school that doesn’t have one yet). YOU CALL THE SHOTS. You are the protector of their childhood, their innocence, and their ability to expand beautifully in these developmental years. They need someone who can stand up for them here & now in a stressful, competitive world. Think long and hard about their future instead of seeing the “ease” of the present moment (your 5 yo being entertained on a tablet during grocery shopping trips or your teen shutting up now that you’ve given in and got them a smartphone). Choose wisely n o w because regret will be a truly painful emotion to live with 10-20 years from now.
