Kidstreet Playground is a fun spot located within Slattery Park, which is just off Route 202 and I-287. The 10.2-acre park has been around since the 1950s, and the playground was built by volunteers in 1995. With a wooden playground and a mix of classic and modern play equipment, there are numerous areas for kids to explore. Amenities like this earn Bridgewater mentions among the best towns in Somerset County. There are also swings, slides, steps, and treehouses for hours of outdoor entertainment. The 15 swings across the playground include both traditional and tire swing styles to encourage fine motor skills, plus baby swings for the littlest visitors. As for slides, visitors will find a mix of straight side-by-side, twisting tunnels, and open-air slides throughout the play area. Climbing webs, towers, and fireman poles are other popular features, and there’s also a large wooden ship at the back of the playground. Our eclipse event begins at 3:00 pm at the Nature Center 443 Van Nostrand Avenue, Englewood, NJ, with some background on the eclipse. Our trail guides will lead short hikes to some higher ground viewing platforms. We will have a live raptor program and discuss how animals in the wild behave during an eclipse and we will live stream the path of totality from the exhibit room. Fun for all ages! Leap Year Eggs! Josephine, our Great Horned Owl laid eggs in 2016 and again four years later in 2020. So we were thrilled when she continued her curious every four year tradition this year! Josephine laid her eggs on March 3, March 6, and on or about March 12. For the first time she attempted to incubate the eggs. That motherly care lasted about 24 hours for each egg, although the average incubation time for Great Horned Owls is 33 days. Having no mate, her eggs are unfertilized, like the ones egg-producing hens lay in their coops. It appears that there will be no more eggs coming this year, as she has totally abandoned her incubation spot on top of the corner hutch in her mew (enclosure) and is behaving “normally” once again like grabbing her toy for our Raptor Care Specialist Rosetta — but only when no one is around! Catherine, Cam and Rosetta led a successful deer drive with a great group of volunteers today. Our Land Management team not only maintains the forest we have today, but enables the forest of tomorrow by protecting the understory from deer grazing. Deer are safely redirected to the 50+ acres of the nature sanctuary outside of the deer fence. We conduct deer drives about twice a year. Flat Rock Brook will be having a deer drive this Saturday, March 30th from 12-4. We hold deer drives periodically to safely herd deer back outside the deer fence that guards our new forest growth. Part of the job of our Land Management team is to protect the understory that will grow into the forest of the future. Duke Farms is one of my favorite places in New Jersey. Doris Duke inherited the land from her father in 1925 when she was only 12 but has always been invested in the environment and horticulture. When she passed, she made sure her will stated to preserve the foundation with the intended use for education, research, and other horticulture purposes. In 1915 the hay barn burnt down leaving only stone walls; now they continue to stand with marble statues lining the interior. Our Education Department totally rocked today! Carol and our new staffer Hae-young taught students from Hackensack High School’s special education department all about Remarkable Rocks! The group learned about the rock cycle, rock identification, erosion and magma, and then got a chance to ID some rocks based on visible aspects such as shine, color and texture. Bonus - it was great weather to hit the trails! It’s always fun when Michelle Balik and her staff bring the @hackensack_rise kids to Flat Rock Brook! Thanks to our “Trail Ambassador” Lion* for reporting a fallen tree across our blue trail earlier this week. Our Land Management Team restored access to the trail while leaving the remaining wood to compost in place. As a nature sanctuary we try to keep human interference minimal and will only intervene when animals or plants might cause harm to our visitors or ecosystem.
