Spring is mud season on horse properties. There are a variety of long-term techniques that can help prevent mud, but sometimes, prolonged wet weather leaves you and your horses swimming despite your best efforts. If you feel like you're treading water, these diversion techniques can be implemented relatively quickly and with minimal expense: • Temporary diversion ditch: Dig a series of shallow ditches with either a shovel or a backhoe to reroute the flow of water away from high traffic areas. • Dry wells: Create a pit and fill it with large, round rocks. During heavy rain, rainwater fills the well and slowly percolates back into the ground water system. (Note: Dry wells are only useful with dry, well-draining soils.) • Water bars: Like a speed bump for water runoff, water bars are used to divert running water away from an areas. Lay an old tree or log (or even jump poles) on the ground at an angle to intercept surface water flows and redirect them toward less erosion-prone areas. Whatever technique you use, put them in place uphill and outside of your confinement areas, barns, or other high traffic areas so that surface water is intercepted before it creates more mud. Divert water toward vegetated areas like an unused corner of your pasture or a woody area. In 2023 and 2023 we switched from using 1080 pig bait to a form of sodium nitrite which is lethal to pigs but doesn't harm other animals. It is delivered in these boxes, which keep it dry. After pre-feeding with harmless corn (seen in photo one) pigs soon learn to lift the flap with their snouts. Compared to 1080, it is also a more humane death; within a short time after ingestion pigs get sleepy and they never wake up. This is evidenced by the number of pig carcasses we find near our bait stations, which is something we rarely saw with 1080. A new Public Lands Rule will mandate a focus on landscape health, conservation, and recreation. The rule was first proposed in April, 2023, and was the subject of five public hearings and a 90 day public comment period. A statement issued by BLM says that “the vast majority” of the resulting 200,000 comments supported the change. To restore public lands and waters, the rule directs the agency to identify areas in need of restoration, and to develop plans to make that restoration happen. These decisions will be made based on the health of specific areas, benefits to local communities, and opportunities to work with non-profits, local governments, and state agencies. Another day spent on management of this wet woodland, former reedbed. Today we were opening up areas for more light, clearing dead wood and fallen trees - with the aim of encouraging more flowering plants, which will bring more butterflies, moths and the animals that feed on these. We also opened up areas above some of the many streams which run through this land, again to encourage flowering plants and more aquatic life. In the past, foresters who oversaw planting had limited knowledge or access to information about seedling genetics. The thought process used to be to find a green seedling with a good root system, plant it, and hope for the best. Silvicultural treatments like herbicides, fertilizer, and thinnings have long been utilized to help encourage growth in southern pine plantations. However, once a seedling is planted, one can never change the growth patterns and characteristics associated with that tree’s genetics. Each seedling represents an investment that the landowner will carry for a quarter of a century or longer. This month, some great folks did a clean up at Chuck Swan State Forest, gathering up 15 bags of trash, plus some large items, including a gas grill, a camp chair, and a sofa. The clean up crew primarily included community members from the Friends of Sharps Chapel group, as well as Tennessee Division of Forestry and Tennessee Department of Agriculture Ag Crime Unit staff. The trash had been left by vandals in an historic area of Rodgers Mill Dam in the Lost Creek section of the forest. We're grateful for amazing community members who help keep our forests clean and beautiful! To make sure that our management actions are on the right track, and are having a positive impact on the parrot population, it is crucial that we measure the response properly. To do this we need to determine the parrot population size and individual survival rates, and importantly how this changes over time. The best way to measure this is through banding, we use a combination of coloured bands that are fitted to the parrots’ legs. This is a standard practice that has been done for well over 100 year in ornithology and aviculture. After we catch the parrots, they are measured and bands are fitted before release, they are typically flying free in a matter of minutes. Fitting the coloured bands is only the beginning.
