Today’s toastie proudly comes from one of my favorite spots in town, 4850. I love everything about this place: the concept, the wine, the fact that the place is tiny, and of course most of all, the food! It never disappoints. I only recently started going for breakfast and have noticed that they would also sell various kind of sandwiches, including cheese ones. A toastie at 4850? Blows my mind... I couldn’t believe it, I had to try! Alas they don’t toast it, so you either eat it cold or take it home and toast it yourself, which is what I opted for. The guy at the counter was super kind and split it in half for me already which made my process way less messy. Quite honestly, any points this toastie loses is purely based on the lack of toasting service on site. Should they start doing that (and serve champagne too, which I actually don’t know if they do at lunchtime), they’d get a full blown 10. For now, we’ll stick to 8+ given the effort required. This toastie is absolutely divine. I’m quite sure its cold version would be good too, but toasted was the ultimate experience. The choice of bread, sourdough, takes it to a fully premium level already but what makes the real difference is inside.. Besides the cheese, there is a light spread of mayo and a light one of caramelized onions. An insane combination which blends perfectly together. Today I was in the mood to really deserve my toastie and I thought to combine this with a nice walk towards a part of the city I pretty much never go to.. “Prima il dovere, poi il piacere” mamma would say. Duty first, pleasure after. You can imagine my disappointment when the pleasure part didn’t come after a 30’ walk. Hotel Jakarta, and more precisely their Bakkerij Westers, gets a generous 5. A 4star hotel can decidedly do better. The toastie was pre-made, they weren’t even sure if there was any left for me- I imagine that if they would have been out of pre-made ones I would have gotten a no. That said, the setting with the plants is definitely worth it and quite special. The bread was probably the highlight, I like the lines from the grill which I associate to a nice crunchiness, which was definitely there. But... the cheese was not properly melted and very uneven, the ham commercial at best, and the whole thing not as warm as you want it. To top it off, no toast to this toastie.. champagne is served only somewhere else in the hotel.
