So further to our last post, Autumn is a glorious time of year (sound on). One of the tasks we focus on post-vintage is building several layered compost piles in the fashion of Dr Elaine Ingham's #soilfoodwebschool where we use layers of brown, green and manure (high N) materials. Dr Mary Cole is a great source of information at www.agpath.com.au These piles get going pretty quickly, they're already getting hot enough that they need turning after 4-5 days. I've started adding an internal "chimney" in an attempt to lose extra heat. We have several piles on the go, using up chipped prunings, fallen trees, pressings and stalks from the winery, kitchen waste, manures and coffee grounds from the local cafe. King’s Day in the Netherlands, so a good time to post this 2015 Anne et Jean-Francois Ganevat Chardonnay Côtes du Jura Montferrand. Although that’s mostly based on color, otherwise it wasn’t really a celebratory wine. After opening, it tasted pretty much like cider - clearly a natural wine in the unpleasant sense of the word. In the hope that the funkiness blows away, we put it in the carafe and it indeed got better with more florals and minerality coming through. There is still a community of family wine producers in Napa Valley and they deserve to be visited. The Komes and Garvey Family have made their intention to produce wines that hone in on what Napa Valley is all about. They are proud producers who are producing stellar and exciting wines. @florasprings is a producer I have been fortunate to visit several times on highway 29 in St. Helena. The wines present a superb sense of place and a vast array of tasting experiences based on site. I have long admired the small production vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines of Holy Smoke, Wild Boar and Out of Sight as expressing the finesse of Napa Valley Cabernet. Cabernet in my thoughts is not a wine that is made easily but one that is made with great effort–from vineyard to crushing pad and to the cellar. 2021 Chardonnay - Margaret River, WA Lifted aromas of white peach with subtle citrus notes are blended with soft French Oak complexity for a bouquet of depth and intrigue. A wonderful full bodied Margaret River Chardonnay with creamy oak that balances the mid palate, complimented by rich stone fruit characteristics with subtle layers of citrus and toast. This wine has a complex structure and lengthy finish. 2021 Pinot Noir - Grampians, Victoria This Pinot Noir is cherry red in colour with complex cherry and strawberry aromas, overlain with subtle oak, sweet char and earthiness. Hints of mushroom, truffle, mocha and dark chocolate balance the fruit weight and provide a savory edge. It's been a busy week, and I want to tell you about Meg's wines from the interview! Did you watch the whole interview? Did you get to the very end, where we barrel-tasted a Sangiovese? You have to go back and listen or download the episode if you have listened at all. Meg's story is something else, and I adore how much she experiments with different wines! All of the links are in the Bio. For example, this 2023 Flipturn Cellars Old Vine Riesling (@flipturncellars). Sitting across the table from Meg, tasting this wine, I distinctly remember a flavor profile I am not used to experiencing in a Riesling. There was an earthiness to wine. I needed to take a second sip, and yeah, there was the earthiness again. I really enjoyed this wine on many levels.
