My visit to Aswan in December 2023 is one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had with my family. It was truly an enjoyable experience. I was inspired by my trip to add many stories in my art library. During my trip, I was amazed by the details of Aswan’s architecture and its people’s fashion that embodies their past and lives on with them. I was amazed by their commitment and display of their heritage. Inspiration came to me when I met a resident of western Aswan, standing straight, carrying an eagle in his hand with strength and pride. What’s interesting was the hobby of training eagles that most of the residents there practice, and it is a heritage symbol that differentiates them and welcomes tourists who see these eagles and take pictures with them as souvenirs. The Nemes crown has never been found in all the excavations done in Kemet. The crown was almost certainly a cloth based creation, although most depictions show it to be rigid in the way it looks. AHMOSE NEFERTARI Ahmose-Nefertari was the first Queen of the 18th Dynasty. She was a daughter of Seqenenre Tao II and Ahhotep I and the great royal wife of Ahmose I. She was the mother of King Amenhotep I and may have served as his regent when he was young. Ahmose-Nefertari was deified after her death. Ahmose-Nefertari was born during the latter part of the seventeenth dynasty during the reign of her grandfather Senakhtenre Tao I. Her father, Seqenenre Tao II, fought against the Hyksos and may have lost his life during a battle. He was succeeded by Kamose. It is possible that Ahmose-Nefertari married Kamose, but no evidence exists of such a marriage. After the death of Kamose, the throne went to Ahmose I. Pharaoh Ahmose was very young and queen-mother Ahhotep. I served as regent during the early years of his reign. Ahhotep would have taken precedence at court over her daughter Ahmose-Nefertari, who was the great royal wife. Ahmose I became the first king of the eighteenth dynasty, a pharaoh ruling over a reunited country. Ahmose Nefertari was the first queen to hold the important office of “God’s Wife of Amun”, effectively establishing her as the joint head of the priesthood of Amun. Ahmose set up a stele in the temple of Amun at Karnak, which functioned as a legal decree, establishing not only the office of God’s Wife but endowing it with lands and goods in perpetuity. She outlived her husband and her son (Amenhotep I). Although her son’s successor, Tuthmosis I, was probably not related to her, he established a statue of her in the Nsut Towi, known today as the Temple of Karnak. We don’t know when she died. The remarkably preserved eyes are so lifelike. . Hatshepsut Temple What a truly awe inspiring architecture. The temple blends so beautifully with the surroundings. It is rightly considered a masterpiece of ancient architecture. Pictures just don’t do it justice. Keep in mind that from where the cart drops you off you have to walk considerable amount of distance to get into the temple. If you are going around noon time, it is hot and you can easily become dehydrated. In this relief below, Kemsit sniffs an ointment, as a servant (now missing) pours liquid into a cup. The queen’s extravagant clothing is embellished with a feather pattern, which is typically reserved for deities and may be relevant to Kemsit’s status as a Hathor priestess. This fragment was discovered within the remnants of the Temple of Mentuhotep (II) Nebhepetre, at Deir el Bahari and measures at 41 × 41 × 14 cm Kemsit Kemsit was an ancient Egyptian queen consort and the wife of Pharaoh Mentuhotep II of the 11th Dynasty. Her titles included “King’s Beloved Wife” (ḥmt-nỉswt mrỉỉ.t=f), “King’s Ornament” (ẖkr.t-nỉswt), “King’s Sole Ornament” (ẖkr.t-nỉswt wˁtỉ.t), and “Priestess of Hathor”. Her tomb (TT308) and modest ornate chapel were discovered in her husband’s Deir el-Bahari temple complex, behind the main building, alongside the tombs of five other ladies: Ashayet, Henhenet, Kawit, Sadeh, and Mayet. The majority of them were Hathor priestesses, thus they may have been buried there as part of the goddess’ religion, but they could also have been the daughters of nobles. Queen Kemsit was represented in reliefs at her husband Mentuhotep II’s funeral temple. These images have been extensively ruined, but it appears that she appeared in a scene with a line-up of regal women. On the preserved shards, she is seen behind Queen Kawit.
