Day 1 in Benin, my 100th visited country I cant believe I am finally in West Africa, I have been wanting to come here for so long. I feel so lucky and privileged to see the world. Benin has been an amazing experience so far, from learning about voodoo, seeing the markets, trying tasty food, and lots of motorbike taxis. Everything I ate at a West African market Markets are a great activity to do in any country, and Togoville was the first village in Togo. It is where Togo got its name. In general, West Africa is such a rich region to travel in, emotionally, in food, in knowledge, diversity, history, and culture I do want to take the time to explain why we couldn’t give big bills at the market. For one, they didn’t have change because we were buying something that was the equivalent of 16 cents versus a bill of $8. The reason we couldn’t just give the $8 worth bill is a bit more complex, and not about not wanting to contribute. It’s on the topic of should you pay more for things while traveling just because you can? I think on one hand its nice to overly contribute to local economies. Especially when its only the matter of a dollar or two. I think it’s important not to be haggling prices dramaticallv. But its also important to look at inflaion and understand how our decisions can impact a community negatively even if we don’t mean them to. Which is also considered the capital of voodoo. The tree has existed there for 4 centuries, and they believe there are spirits inside the tree. This means only good wishes are allowed. Since 1770, the temple has stood here, wnd you can only go in once initiated. Initiation often happens as a baby, but even as an adult you must not wear a shirt for 3 months afterwards. The Zingbin (special pot) is filled with holy water. This is the oldest mosque in all of West Africa Known as the Larabanga mosque, it was built in 1421 by a man named Ibrahim who came to spread Islam from Medina, Saudi Arabia Since its 600 years old, it stays looking nice with a fresh coat of paint every 6 months We arrived right when the call to prayer was going on, so it was interesting to watch locals go in their separate doors: Men, chief, and women (no kids are allowed) Its made from mud and clay, and the tree pictured is over Ibrahim’s grave and is 500 years old. Everything I ate at a West African market Markets are a great activity to do in any country, and Togoville was the first village in Togo. It is where Togo got its name. In general, West Africa is such a rich region to travel in, emotionally, in food, in knowledge, diversity, history, and culture I do want to take the time to explain why we couldn’t give big bills at the market. For one, they didn’t have change because we were buying something that was the equivalent of 16 cents versus a bill of $8. The reason we couldn’t just give the $8 worth bill is a bit more complex, and not about not wanting to contribute. It’s on the topic of should you pay more for things while traveling just because you can? I think on one hand its nice to overly contribute to local economies. Especially when its only the matter of a dollar or two. I think it’s important not to be haggling prices dramaticallv. But its also important to look at inflaion and understand how our decisions can impact a community negatively even if we don’t mean them to. Day 2 - Arrived Aswan around 8am, straight to Nile River, to Philae Temple, check in hotel and spent our night in Nubian Village. Aswan Nubian Village is a must visit to experience a traditional and very unique lifestyle. The village is colorful and i found people very welcoming. They have small market where you can buy local spices and crafts. Nubian people speak their own language called Nuba and have specific traditions that are different from rest of Egypt.
