My heart is so full working with children again 💓 I am finishing up a two part class where we read the legend of the caribou boy, did dot painting on Antler slices, and then did an offering with tobacco on the land. I'm so proud that I'm able to share our Dene culture with the kids. One little person really connected with the tobacco exercise. They said it reminded them of their grandpa that passed away, and they then worked through some big emotions. So important that kids see their culture and ways of being and knowing in the school environment and that it is OK to process their emotions. I'm a teacher, and having the opportunity to be back in the classroom this week and last really filled my heart ❤️ It's been a couple of years now, but it felt like riding a bike, and it was a reminder that I'm really good at it 😄 Sharing skills and traditional knowledge with youth is such an amazing experience. What we're gifted isn't meant for us to keep solely for ourselves. Sharing my culture is a blessing, one that I don't take lightly, and Indigenizing educational spaces is such an important task. I was able to share some of my language, what respecting our materials looks like and why we do this, and making an offering on the land so that we practice reciprocity and gratitude. They learned patience with their projects and that sewing and beading are like medicine to us. To share this knowledge in educational institutions that weren't designed or welcoming of Indigenous people is full circle for me. There's still lots of work to be done, but when I get to do these things, I make myself, my family and my ancestors proud. I'm slowly getting there, but there will never be any place like home. I am Indigenous and grew up IN community. There's an important distinction between living IN A community, and living IN community. You are involved, you attend local events, you volunteer, you help when someone passes away in any way you can, you invite people over for tea and chat, and in countless other ways... you show up. This is an important distinction that needs to be honored in our communities. If you are a visitor to a small northern community, please take some time to explore this distinction. Yesterday, I saw a post that only white people can afford Indigenous made earrings. I know it wasn't directed at me... but it was offensive. I've worked my butt off to get to the level I'm at, and I know others have as well. Colonization has taken loads from us, and I think time is better spent lifting each other up rather than tearing each other down. You can't afford it... then save up. Fireweed on Antler 🪻 Two years back, I did a series focusing on fireweed. My little community had just gone through a devestating flood, and we were all arising beautifully after such a big disaster. One of my best friends got hit really hard, and it was so heartbreaking to watch her go through all of it. My house got hit hard too. A lot of damage that has taken us these few years to repair. Fireweed is so beautiful and so symbolic. Arising after fire has ravaged. I thought it was a perfect time to revive a few of these styles. So many of our communities are facing hardship due to the wildfires ravaging the north. My other artistic hobby is painting 🖼 I am expanding on this skill, so it's interesting to see my evolution from the last time I created these.
