I'm a teacher, and having the opportunity to be back in the classroom this week and last really filled my heart ❤️ It's been a couple of years now, but it felt like riding a bike, and it was a reminder that I'm really good at it 😄 Sharing skills and traditional knowledge with youth is such an amazing experience. What we're gifted isn't meant for us to keep solely for ourselves. Sharing my culture is a blessing, one that I don't take lightly, and Indigenizing educational spaces is such an important task. I was able to share some of my language, what respecting our materials looks like and why we do this, and making an offering on the land so that we practice reciprocity and gratitude. They learned patience with their projects and that sewing and beading are like medicine to us. To share this knowledge in educational institutions that weren't designed or welcoming of Indigenous people is full circle for me. There's still lots of work to be done, but when I get to do these things, I make myself, my family and my ancestors proud. A beautiful day for Canada’s first Truth and Reconciliation day. Roux and I did an orange shirt run, went to the events at Somba ke and then an early evening dog walk with some special humans. 🧡The Government of the Northwest Territories created a very good course on the impacts of residential schools, colonialism,and indigenous and non-indigenous relations. It is free for for anyone to access and I encourage anyone to make time to take this course or another like it. I have placed the link in my bio. Today is not an easy day. BREAKING: In response to widespread public pressure, Northwest Territories Member of Parliament Michael McLeod has committed to voting in favour of Motion M-1 for a Green New Deal, making him the first Liberal in the country to do so. This decision came after he refused to take a public position on the motion. It is a direct reflection on the power of grassroots community organizing, and people in the North speaking up on the urgency of climate justice. . The motion calls on Canada to deliver a Green New Deal that cuts emissions through a just transition, creates millions of well-paying jobs, enshrines Indigenous rights, and is developed in full partnership with frontline, marginalized and vulnerable communities. While not an actual bill, its passing would be a meaningful step towards the transformative legislation we need. . We are pleased with this news and thank Mr. McLeod for listening to the concerns of his constituents. However, we want to see him go further in showing leadership on climate justice by taking a public position against the RCMP's ongoing, illegal occupation of Wet'suwet'en lands, which he has remained silent on; as well as on the Teck Frontier mine, which could have dangerous downstream impacts on us in the NWT and mean disaster for the climate. . We have also asked Mr. McLeod to demonstrate his support for climate action by formally seconding the motion, which would go a long way in gaining the support of other Liberals that will be required to pass it. He has refused to do this, citing 'some concerns,' which he did not name, and referred to seconding it as the 'minutae of parliamentary proceedings.' We think that in a climate emergency, an MP for the North should be doing everything in their power to make a Green New Deal a reality, which includes formally seconding M-1. . Today we met with one of the most powerful people in the territory. . TL;DR: Michael McLeod agrees with our goals in principle, but stopped short of committing to concrete actions. . We asked him to support MP @peterjulian_'s Motion M-1 for a Green New Deal, which says we need bold climate legislation developed in full partnership with frontline and marginalized communities. He didn't want to simply because it's an NDP motion and he's a Liberal. He told us to wait for the Liberals to come up with their own plan. . We told him we've been waiting for four years already. We told him that in an emergency, it shouldn't matter who's with what party - we need to come together to do what is necessary, because the liveability of this planet depends on it. . He agreed to consider it. We asked him for a timeline to hear back, and he said by mid-January. . He also wanted more time to consider the open letter, which was first sent to him over 6 weeks ago. He'll also let us know by mid-January if he'll publicly accept it. . This means that there is a window for us to pressure him. If you want to take action, you can call his YK office this week before it closes at (867) 873-6995 or e-mail him at [email protected]. You can tell him we need climate action and he can show he's serious about it by publicly accepting our open letter and/or seconding Motion M-1. . We've let him know that should he decide to stand with us, the people of the NWT, over his political stripes, he will have our full support. This is not a problem specifically for the North, the Seychelles, Micronesia or Iqaluit. This is universal. We need to do something about it. If we don't, pretty soon there isn't gonna be anything we can do. Climate change means loss of culture and language. Recently a glacier in Iceland disappeared and all the sea ice in Alaska melted for the first time in recorded history. The politicians are saying they have to turn to the youth to be able to make a difference but 15, 16, 17 year olds don't know how to save the world. We need to come together as a nation and just as humans to help save our Earth - it's dying. For every 2 breaths you take, 1 comes from the ocean and the other from your surroundings. And the oceans are dying. That means we're in trouble and we need to do something about it.
