Reindeer and caribou are grazers who feed on lichen, horsetails, sedges, and grasses during winter. The reindeer in the Northwest Territories are the only free-ranging herd in Canada today. Prior to being purchased by the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) in 2021, they were partly owned and managed by Lloyd Binder, whose family roots trace back to the original Saami herders who brought the herd over from Alaska. Say, hello to Rachel. Rachel acknowledges that she lives and works on Chief Drygeese Territory, the Traditional Lands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, the North Slave Métis, and the many other Nations that have travelled here for millennia. She is originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, and is a grandchild of Dutch settlers. She moved to the NWT in 2007 to volunteer at Deh Gáh School in Fort Providence. Rachel hold a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and earned her teaching degree in 2010. Since then, she has spent many years advocating the benefits and joys of reading and storytelling through her work there, then later with the NWT Literacy Council, the Yellowknife Playschool Association and, most recently, Bushkids. As she taught in Fort Providence, Rachel noticed a gap in the resources available to educators. The students often did not see themselves reflected in the material they were reading and, in addition, they were not reading that material in their traditional language. She took a step to change this when she wrote "A Journey Down River." It won the SSDEC story writing contest, which allowed for it to be published in four languages. The book won the Northwords’ Youth Book Award in 2018 and, that year, was translated into a fifth language, Dene Zhatie, the local language of Fort Providence. While raising two beautiful children, Rachel has continued her learning journey, becoming a Forest and Nature Practitioner. This inspired the recently released, "The Land Outside My Window", which is illustrated by the very talented artist, Elaine Landry. Then Judith called! New friends, new opportunities, new vision! Northern Quill Publishing is an exciting new venture of which Rachel feels privileged to be a part.
