Meet one of Oregon's rarest visitors in its history to date - the Blue Rock Thrush. 💙 Vancouver resident Michael Sanchez unknowingly captured ground-breaking photos of this very rare bird near Hug Point State Park last Sunday at dawn. "This thrush is a common species Across Europe and Asia, with four different subspecies," says Brodie Cass Talbott, senior educator and trips specialist with the Bird Alliance of Oregon. "This bird is of the phillipensis subspecies as they're the furthest east of the subspecies, breeding in Russia." We can determine this and the fact that the bird is male by their chestnut-colored belly. Their presence is sending shockwaves throughout the birding world as birders scramble to see this "mega" (a very rare bird). "What makes it so exceptional is that most of our previous 'megas' had previously been reported in Alaska, but not this bird. And then, in a mind-boggling coincidence, another adult male was reported from the Farallones three days later," says Cass Talbott. "It is impossible to know if it was the same bird or a different bird, as both are so incredibly unlikely." The Blue Rock Thrush sighting is the very first for the United States and the first accepted American Birding Association record for the bird's species in Oregon. This is a blue rock thrush. They are native to Europe and Asia. I happened to catch this on the Oregon Coast while I was photographing waterfalls this past weekend. This has caused quite a stir in the #birding community, as this is an extraordinarily rare sighting in North America, with only one other potential sighting in 1997. This week Charlie and I took a mini road trip down to Eugene, OR to deliver a very large painting for an upcoming show hosted by the Cascade Raptor Center. While I was visiting I was lucky enough to be offered time to wander the grounds and sketch the 30-40 raptor ambassadors that they have residing on site! It was basically just me and the birds on a gloriously sunny afternoon while I sketched away, studying their movements and behaviors while learning to simplify my approach to outdoor drawing/painting. The resident kestrel even flew right up to the enclosure while I sketched it as if to take a good long look at what this silly human was up to. The Burrowing Owl really stole my heart though, as he was on the ground running back and forth while his little feet made pitter patters on the gravel! He also came up to take an interest in me while I sat next to his home, and we shared a peaceful moment listening to the murmers of hoots, calls, and flapping feathers echoing all around us. The Cascades Raptor Center is open to the public and offers a variety of educational programming for visitors of all ages. I've visited a few times during the decade I've lived in Oregon and admire the important work they do protecting these birds and educating people on how vital to our planet raptors of all species truly are.
