While this natural spectacle is breathtaking, it also presents a significant challenge for our feathered friends. During migration, birds encounter various hazards, with one of the most prominent being collisions with windows. The glare from city lights can disorient them, causing them to collide with buildings. Unfortunately, these collisions often result in injury or fatalities for the birds. To mitigate this threat, we recommend... 🐦 Dimming nonessential lights from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., reducing the risk of disorientation for nocturnally migrating birds. 🐦 Installing shields on external lights to direct light downward, minimizing its impact on bird migration routes. 🐦 Implementing bird-safe window treatments, such as decals or cords spaced 2 inches apart, to make windows more visible to birds. Learned something new today! During routine preventive pest control Friday by Van and Heather from Alpha Pest Control (strongly recommend), they noticed bird activity in the grass behind our garage, and found / pictured this nest. It’s a Vespers Sparrow, and we think we have two separate nests near the house (we’ve seen two sets of parents going in and out of tall grass). They apparently come to Oregon to breed, are at risk of endangerment, and are a benefit to agricultural areas (they eat crop-destroying insects and invasive weed seeds). Since both nests are in tall grass, we will hold off on further mowing / weed-eating until breeding season ends. A couple of weeks ago, I was walking in my neighborhood and came across a killdeer who kept yelling, walking in one direction, and then pretending to be hurt. Two Townsend's Voles, a big one and a small one, scurried back and forth across two feet of mud between the safety of grassy cover. This beautiful Bay wild stallion mustang!!! OO-LA-LA! He was with the gorgeous Palomino wild stallion mustang that I posted yesterday. These two stallions were wild and very unsettled. This HMA - Palomino Butte in Oregon - was subjected to a government roundup last year. I don’t know when these two were returned but they were so skittish. We spent a couple hours looking for other mustangs but only found two other stallions a few miles away from these two. This. Beautiful. Palomino. Stallion. Wow! Oh! Wow! Be still my heart!! We stopped by the Palomino Butte HMS on our way home from Oregon on Sunday. Sadly we didn’t see many mustangs. 😢😠 Funny story! We had been driving around on bumpy, dirt roads for over an hour. Then we decided to head back to the “main” gravel road. As we got back on the gravel road, I looked at the pond on the other side of the road and told Sam “No mustangs!” He laughed and told me to look to my right. Lo and behold, there were two wild stallions - a golden palomino and a dark bay. And they were wild. Only mustangs around. Saturday, 4/27: Eugene, OR 6:30pm at Caddis Fly Shop @writers_on_the_fly began in 2015, establishing itself as one of the most unique, engaging and authenticin-person event series in the fly fishing community. Since its inception, the shows have cycled around the Pacific Northwest with the well-known Cascadia Tour—but this Spring the show expands down the West Coast. Four talented and inspiring writers and anglers are slotted to share some of their favorite work at each event, along with a featured artist and a local non-profit that will benefit from raffle proceeds and donations. The ⭐️ of the day was this beautiful boy - Tupelo Honey! He’s the last born colt of Cruiser and Jorja. He was born at the BLM corrals in Burns, Oregon after the roundup in September 2022. My hubby gave me my Christmas gift this weekend. All I wanted for Christmas was to see my boy, Cruiser! Then in February I got really sick and am just now starting to feel better, so we made a quick trip to @skydogsanctuary. These are the photos Sam took of me talking to Cruiser. He’s still definitely a wild mustang, which is exactly what I wanted for him and why he’s at @skydogsanctuary. He wouldn’t let me get closer than 4-5 feet to him. That’s okay! I had a couple of curious Cottontails come right up to me at Finley the other day, which was quite the surprise considering their normal temperament. Recently, they've appeared to be quite carefree and happy, so I decided to write a poem about it. This is my first attempt at a sonnet, so there's some things that didn't work out as well as I wanted them to.
