Forget X Factor or Britain’s Got Talent. In 1970, a battle of the bands contest in Cleveland Ohio gave us one of the funkiest groups to ever do it. S.O.U.L (Sounds Of Unity and Love) won the first prize of $1,000 and a recording contract with Musicor Records. Their debut album “What Is It” was released the following year. Containing seven tracks of high quality, raw funk the LP has long been highly sought after. Of course, the stand out track is Burning Spear. A bass, flute and drum orgy that never fails to give me goosebumps no matter how many times I hear it. But it’s a terrific album all the way through. Paul Stubblefield’s drumming is as hypnotic as his famous namesakes was and is complimented by the locked in bass of Lee Lovett leaving us with a hell of a rhythm section. With Gus Hawkins and Walter Winston adding sax, flute and guitar we’re left with an amazingly tight band that, I assume, blew everyone else out of the water at that battle of the bands.
