🗡️ B R F ⚡️ One for @hades_militaria and @headgearhunter with the recent unusual British Airborne Forces and 16 Air Assault Brigade Reconnaissance Force photos. I’ve scoured for the past day to find this photo again of a member of 8 Parachute Field Coy, REME wearing the Maroon Blue Maroon version of the BRF DZ Flash that was worn on Op Herrick 13. This is the only photo I’ve seen of this style of DZ being worn. The photo quality is not great. The BRF was the reconnaissance element of 16X and was made up of the Pathfinder Platoon and other elements of the brigade. 𝙳𝚊𝚢 𝙶𝚕𝚘𝚠 Finally saw the sun at home for the first time in a long while, which meant I had chance to dig out some bright “day glow” disco Trops, Falklands era Parachutist Helmet and my absolute favourite… a super bright “P77” DPM Para Smock. Thanks to @lp_military_history and @brightlightmilitaria for the inspiration from your recent Para Smock posts! I bought this smock many years ago now. It came with black cuffs that I managed to replace with a correct pair and the outline of a DZ Flash and Formation Sign. Originally I applied a 23/144 PFA DZ Flash (now @airbornemedics / @144paramed) to the smock but later replaced it with a 216 Parachute Signal Squadron DZ Flash @parachutesignalsrecruiting ⬜️🟦 to fit more with how my collection was being streamlined. 𝙋-𝙏𝙮𝙥𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙢𝙚𝙩 Finally completed the collection of Wartime British Airborne Helmets! My new P-Type Parachute Helmet arrived this morning. Sadly, not an original as one would cost more than my car! But a museum quality replica made by Steve Kiddle at Pegasus Militaria. Having wanted one for years, I spoke to Steve and supplied him with a battered RAC/RM Helmet shell I’d had knocking about for years which I first started Living History with. This is the end result! A complete transformation with the iconic duck bill, new liner and paint job. The P-Type helmet replaced the Sorbo rubber helmet for operational use and. The P-Type was first seen used during the Bruneval Raid in Northern France by the Parachute Regiment. They were later modified with the addition of thicker leather straps (seen on the later airborne helmets), and despite being replaced by the Helmet Steel Airborne Troops (HSAT), P-Types were still being worn in Africa, Normandy and Arnhem by British Airborne Forces. For the collector, an original is definitely one of the holy grails of British Airborne items. It is surprising that despite being in a lot of British Airborne books, this type of helmet is still uncommon to some British Airborne reenactors/living historians and is not produced by anyone else but Pegasus Militaria at this moment in time. Always been quite the fan of auscam. It's still one of those patterns not many people use unlike what's happened with the likes of DNC and tiger stripe to name a couple. As usual, my local surplus shop coming in with the great finds was this Australian para smock and luckily in my size. With their laws on surplus and selling to civis, it's good to see one over here so I couldn't pass it up. As with many para smocks, its extremely thin so the wind goes right through it but it's basically a pretty direct copy of the British variant. No real damage apart from a few small holes between the knitted cuffs and the sleeve itself so a lovely bit of kit. I dont think this will lead to an Australian kit any time soon since, webbing is a pain to get a hold of ( unless you fancy swapping my smersh for some) and rifles wise, I'm not a massive fan of using an aug. Only option I could see myself going for is using my GPMG in place of a MAG. Anyway, cool and unusual kit. What we like to see . . I’m deciding whether or not I redo one of my favourite displays, a full set of 58 pattern webbing that came from a Falklands airborne vet, and a Parachute Regiment smock with British and German para wings (although like a Wally I’ve used the wrong picture for the main one here, see next post for the correct one). I display it variously with an airborne helmet or Parachute Regiment beret depending on the time of year 😀. I’m thinking I might put it away for a bit and change things up with a Bundeswehr SF tunic, or maybe a Guards no.2 dress.
