Details on an 18th Century men’s shirt I recently completed for a commission in @burnleyandtrowbridge shirt linen and thread. This is one of my partially machined, all visible stitching hand stitched shirts. I just love how it lays like an original when you lay it out on the table, that scrunch around the neck, the tiny stitching giving it body along the seams… *chef’s kiss*. This is also the first time I’ve made SUCH a narrow wristband, but now visually it matches the originals in paintings in every way and I am so here for it! Some more impressions from my snowy mountain hike. I truly felt like I was in a movie, transported back in time. I already miss being there. Hopefully, I'll eventually achieve my goal of embarking on multi-day hikes with nothing but Stone Age gear and skills. My impression of what the Malay nobility would have worn in the past. At first I was practicing on how to tie the kain sampin/sinjang in a more traditional manner with a little online search. I then came across some photos of Malays in the 19th and 20th century in which it piqued my interest on how they dress back then. No, you haven’t been imagining things… I’m indeed back at Colonial Williamsburg! It’s amazing how quickly a tailor shop internship can tug me back from my happily self-imposed exile in Oklahoma. It’s only already more than halfway over (much to my horror and chagrin) but that is the way life works, isn’t it? It keeps turning at the same breakneck speed, no matter how much we wish it would slow down. One of my goals coming out here was to hopefully manage to take some pictures and video around the historic area in various outfits as I never really got around to it in college between being ill and not having a tripod for my phone. And so far, I’ve managed both to do WAVES and now this! The beautiful dark green wool gown was originally made by @eighteenthcenturyscot for herself and barely (read: doesn’t technically) fits me with my current fluctuation in weight, but when the result looks like butterfly wings, how could I be bothered? 1943 was a relatively quiet year for the 6th SS Nord Division, due to the lack of attempts to gain the initiative from either side, which resulted in a static front. This allowed the division to focus on reorganisation, filling shortages, training and improving positions. The main operations of the division during this period were patrols behind enemy lines, generally carried out with a strength of no more than a reinforced platoon at distances of up to 40km. These actions aimed at capturing prisoners, destroying enemy positions and obtaining all kinds of information concerning the enemy. Soldiers taking part in these patrols distinguished themselves by their lightweight even essential equipment, which was intended to make it easier to cross difficult often swampy terrain and then allow for a quick withdrawal. Today, I took advantage of the remaining snowy weather to put my reindeer coat to the test.
