I don't have a problem with most reviewers trolling (waise bhi not many are doing actual constructive reviews these days and are instead just showing off their English vocabulary or their so-called peak sense of humour or peddling their own agendas) films made by some Directors who live under their own illusion that they still continue to have their own set of audience no matter how bad their film is, but what feels pointless to me is when these reviewers make it seem like such films shouldn't be made at all or that these Directors shouldn't be allowed to exist at all. The censor board and in turn government not allowing certain films to see the light of the day is an altogether different discussion in greater seriousness (for example, another Diljit-starrer PUNJAB '95 based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra), but even otherwise, who are we to decide what should be made and the only thing that we could do is either give those films loads of money or don't watch them at all in case we feel that much disinterested or if the film feels that harmful to your mental health or the broader society. For example, recently I didn't care to go to a theatre to watch THE FAMILY STAR (2024) because I knew it might not work for me and stayed away and going by its numbers, I hope Parasuram would've realized that it's not the time anymore for such movies where the audience clearly responded back in money sense that's the major deciding factor for these films to be made or not made. This is the same thing I wrote (last slide) about during ANIMAL (2023) release where I didn't have any problem with the people for whom that film worked or didn't work, but I absolutely hated those people who dragged Vanga's parents wife children into the discussion and were passing some disgusting comments in the air. I wonder how such people will react to the core thesis of Imtiaz Ali's AMAR SINGH CHAMKILA (2024) wherein reception to Chamkila's art too begs the same question of who are we to decide or censor what an artist should produce, and as DSP Bhatti in the film replies, "Wait a few years." #thefamilystar - A boring Imitation of Geetha Govindam that tests your patience... The biggest drawback of the Vijay Deverakonda-Mrunal Thakur film perhaps is Parashuram’s writing. Parasuram's idea of showing middle-class situations is good but the plot he choose to tell this point is neither novel nor compelling enough to keep viewers' interest throughout the film's runtime. The conflicts are weak. The story itself is utterly dated and the treatment has no spark. The plot was a confusing mess with connections weaker than a spiderweb in a hurricane. The screenplay fails to resonate with viewers as it lacks compelling writing, especially in the second half. The first half of Family Star had impressive episodes and the chemistry between the lead actors is good at times. The second half reminds us of tv serials. The climax fight has no prominence. The climax portion of Family Star looked so dull. Another biggest issue Family Star suffers from is a lack of emotional depth. Everything in the film feels superficial. You don’t feel anything for the lead characters, let alone the supporting ones, with no proper explanation for their motivations. The film fails to convincingly establish the central conflict or tension that drives the drama forward. He instead chooses to focus on scenes that are meant to be funny, but the jokes don’t really land. There’s an unnecessary scene where Govardhan is mistaken for a prostitute which is played for gags, but all it does is make you cringe. So does his behaviour at the work place. This is why it’s ironic that the infamous ‘iron ee vanchala enti’ (do I need to bend the iron) fight scene unintentionally make you laugh. The background music by Gopi Sundar is not impressive. Two songs are good. The screenplay is sluggish. The dialogues could have been a lot better. There is no emotional connection and it always appears like a series of scenes. The visuals are quite good and the film looks rich in every frame.
