I love a good found footage movie so I was super excited when my horror groups monthly movie rental was The Glenarma Tapes (2023). Plus I had never seen any Irish horror movies yet so even better. The movie follows four friends as they head to the Glenarma forest after overhearing two teachers talking about meeting up there. Thinking they are going to catch their teachers having an affair they head off into the woods after them. What ends up happening once they get to the woods is not what they had in mind, not at all! This was a great found footage movie, I really enjoyed it. It was well paced and didn’t lose my attention in the beginning when they were building the story. Once you get to the forest it was all fun and excitement. Knuckles Review: Created by John Whittington & Toby Ascher, this series follows Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) who has been attempting to get used to life on earth following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He ends up going on a journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train deputy sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna Warrior when a new threat arises to challenge them in the form of former lackey of Doctor Robotnik who is intent on obtaining Knuckles’ power. The Sonic franchise is no stranger to television having had several animated adaptations in the past but this marks the first live action show to be made as part of the surprisingly successful Sonic the Hedgehog film universe created by Jeff Fowler. Idris Elba’s take on the beloved red echidna was a major standout in the second film for many people so the fact that he is getting his own small spinoff series is definitely not a surprise given how popular he was for both critics and audiences. But there is one important question to ponder. Is this series an entertaining and necessary watch or is it just a cheap product banking on the character’s popularity from the second film? After watching all six episodes I can honestly say I had a mostly good time with this wacky yet entertaining limited series though I definitely was left wanting something more different than what we got. It’s a very low stakes spin off story that plays off like a fun 90s stoner comedy that takes place in the Sonic film universe and while it may not be appealing to most people I found it to be an entertaining watch that has some well done elements making for a decent laid back watch. The cast of the show do an alright job performance wise for their respective characters though the central characters played by Idris Elba and Adam Pally are easily the best parts of the series as whole both together and individually. I think they should’ve stopped at third film and end it with a perfect trilogy since the previous three was great, the second was my favorite for the details in the animation and visuals, the storytelling, there’s an emotional side in the story and I feel like Lord Shen was the best villain out of all Kung Fu Panda villains. In the fourth film, it didn’t feel right without the presence of the Furious Five as I think they are one of the core elements in Po’s life. Kung Fu Panda 3 lacks depth in the narrative, it’s missing its spark and charm that was once there in the trilogy, the warm spiritual messages and quotes weren’t as memorable either. The story was dull and inspiring, it was bland and fell flat with its fast pacing, it seemed forced and rushed. The fight scenes weren’t as impressive either especially in this one scene where Po had to fight a number of guards in a thick fog, and the final boss fight was anticlimactic. The antagonist lacked background story for her character and her motives were pretty weak, it wasn’t as intimidating as Tai Lung, Lord Shen and Kai. Voice acting was overall satisfactory, Jack Black was energetic as usual, Awkwafina was amusing, Viola Davis was terrific. Adults and kids might’ve enjoyed the trilogy but this one seems to cater only for kids for its animation and visuals. This fourth film seems unnecessary to me and since it was confirmed to be a six-film series, I’m just hoping for the best and they’re able to bounce back for the next two films since this took a downturn, in my opinion. This wasn’t as fun as the trilogy, it’s predictable and underwhelming but I still had a good time and made a few laughs. RATING: 4/10
Movie Review - At number 2 is a movie that reminds us not to give up on superhero movies yet. There have been so many misfires recently but James Gunn worked some magic with Guardians Vol 3. As expected, Vol 3 is weird, funny, and exciting. Unexpectedly, it's dark, violent, and gory at times. It's a solid conclusion to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, I'm just surprised it kept a PG-13 rating. Vol. 3 is the wildest Guardians of the Galaxy yet. I loved that it’s also more emotional. Chris Pratt does a great job conveying a man whose heart is shattered. Rocket's story is heart-wrenching. I found my eyes watering up a few different times. For many of these characters, they're the best they've ever been. Most notable are Nebula and Mantis as they get to step out of the shadows and shine in this story. The funny scenes got some real laughter out of me. It's not an easy thing to make a movie that's dark and emotionally heavy, but also funny, but James Gunn pulls it off. This third movie feels big, as it should. REVIEWED! JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE FLASHPOINT PARADOX (2013), directed by Jay Oliva, starring Justin Chambers, C. Thomas Howell, Kevin McKidd, and Michael B. Jordan. A far more compelling adaptation than The Flash (2023), just go in with some basic knowledge of DC’s major characters. 7.8/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ This film’s animation is just smooth enough. The style can occasionally look a little too simple, but it works perfectly well most of the time. This allows for some well presented action. The score is rather remarkable during important moments. This is nice to see, considering that’s not the case for most of the other animated DC films like this. This movie actually made me like The Flash. Barry is a decent lead here. The real standout, though, is Thomas Wayne, who is Batman in the altered timeline. His story in this film alone is sad, but knowing Batman makes it even more sad. While the major characters get proper setup, but there are a good few character beats that will go completely over your head if you don’t go in with at least basic knowledge of DC’s major heroes and villains. The only reason I bring this up is because this film technically isn’t a sequel to anything, as it kicked off the DC Animated Movie Universe. That said, the film largely still functions without this knowledge, and I have to give points to the writing for that. My big issue with the plotting of this film is the fact that we never actually see Barry save his mom. This works in favor of the twist at the end, where Zoom reveals that Barry was the cause of the new timeline, but should have been a pretty major character beat, and it’s never explained why Barry seems to have forgotten it.

Despite the script lacking in profound depth and uniqueness that it so wanted to display, not to mention the cheesy jump scares that were always minutes late, Immaculate was a fun watch and a brilliant portrayal of the perils of Catholicism. Relax, I'm From the Future was directed by Luke Higginson and stars Rhys Darby, Gabrielle Graham, Janine Theriault and Julian Richings. The film is about a man from the future, now trapped in the past who tries to make a life for himself, oblivious to the consequences he has set in motion. I know what you're all thinking. Weren't you gonna review Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire. That will come, I promise ya. But my mum recommended this to me, saying it's a daft but fun film. So, of course I thought "Why not? Might as well give it a go." And I'm not gonna lie, she was right. It was a daft film, but damn did I enjoy it. The thing about Relax, I'm From the Future is that it's one of those films where you don't have to take it too seriously. Sure, there are some scenes where it gets kinda deep and heartfelt, and in the climax, it has a little bit of gore in it. What's not to like? We have Rhys Darby playing the clueless time traveller Casper, who tries to live in the world he finds himself in after travelling. I loved him in this film, he reminded me of his character in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the Next Level, you know the NPC guy Nigel? Him. Yeah, he was great in this one, as was Gabrielle Graham as Holly. At first she's hesitant on trusting him, but after she does, she still thinks he's taking the mick with it. I liked them both in this film. Before I go into the gripes, I wanna say how it was very reminiscent to other time travel and multiversal films while also mocking the whole concept. The main film it reminded me of was Everything Everywhere All at Once. I loved it for that. I do have one gripe with the film. Sure, it's not a perfect film by any means of the imagination, but some of the comedy didn't really work for me. Some of it fell flat unfortunately, because I did laugh in a few scenes. That and I thought the villain felt a bit bland to me, just a little bit boring, you know? She felt like Dar Benn from The Marvels. A villain with no substance unfortunately. (cont. In comments)

Watched: (First Time) The Omen (1976, Richard Donner) This glorious piece of Hollywood hokum is trashy genre cinema dressed up as an A-list event. It features a 60-year-old Gregory Peck fathering a child with his much younger wife, the wonderful Lee Remick. Their 5-year-old boy turns out to be the illegitimate child of Satan and a jackal, and the future Antichrist. The film is packed with priests, hokey apocalyptic prophecies, conspiracies, nosy journalists, stylish cinematography, and a blaring score, making it immensely fun. ARGYLLE (2024) - Incredibly convoluted and overstuffed full of twists to a point beyond parody and exhaustion, Argylle is straight-up trash. _ It is so simple yet told in the most complex way possible, with back and forth timelines, about 15 double crosses, reveals and twists. It got to a point where I just gave up on the whole thing and trying to follow it all. _ Any narrative sense or structure is discarded for shock value moments and Vaughn becomes more concerned with where the next twist will come from, rather than fleshing out the story, lore or characters. _ The rest of it is generic spy nonsense filled with cliches. There is also the awfully unfunny screenplay, pedestrian performances (Sam Rockwell innocent) and shoddy CGI. @ive_seen_that_film and it's a 4/5 for me. An ace of a film as childhood friends clash over the affections of a former rising tennis star turned coach through the years. So what's it all about? Best friends and tennis partners Art and Patrick meet Tashi Duncan, the child tennis prodigy at a party after the US Open junior championships. Their competitive spirit and friendships are tested as each tries to win her affection. Over time the friendship breaks down between the two best friends, as each goes their separate ways. Fast forward several years later and both find themselves in a local tennis final, which is when we really start to learn the history between the triangle. The obsessive nature of Tashi, now turned coach and her desire to be on the winning team at whatever cost becomes more apparent. Jumping between time frames to tell the back story is a nice, but sometimes confusing element. Detroit Rock City (1999) - My Rating: D #MovieReviews This is a film that many of my friends like, and I think because they saw it when they were young that may be the reason they love it. If I saw this as a teen it may be a nostalgia trip for me, but watching it now… meh. I’m not a fan of Kiss, but thankfully the film is filled with great music from other bands. The comedy for the most part falls flat, only giving me handful of chuckles. The characters are very over the top, except for Natasha Lyonn, Sam Huntington, Melanie Lynskey, and a few other side characters. It’s no wonder they’re still acting to this day. By the way, what is Edward Furlong doing these days. I found myself going back and forth on his character. I don’t know, I can understand why some love this movie, but I just found it mediocre. I’ll stick with my Dazed and Confuseds, and Empire Records. One final thought. Isn’t it wild how Sam Huntington has made an entire career just playing the same character in seemingly every film he’s in? That’s not a dig at him either, I’m a fan. 'G! LU'. It's a simple story of true friendship bogged down by the shallow development of the 6 main characters who were portrayed by male starlets who can barely act or cannot act at all (at least for now). The writer just had to insert a sob 'plot twist' and a predictable lgbtq story arch to make it relevant, but to utter failure. In the end, the main characters were just a bunch of spoiled jocks trying to justify their uncharismatic behaviour. Of the main cast, the 'best' was Kiko Estrada, who was quite sympathetic despite his character being the least developed. The worst of the bunch were David Licauco and Derrick Monasterio , who acted like lifeless wood and overcooked bland ham, respectively. Their female leads were no good either, including beauty queens Katarina Rodriguez (who can not act to save her life) and 'award-winning actress' and Miss Universe semi-finalist Michelle Dee. It starts out rather simple, when we meet Sam (Andrew Garfield), he seems like a stoner and a stalker. Interested in his neighbors, he falls down a deep rabbit hole of mysteries and conspiracies. And I’m in no way capable to even to begin to summarize the story, because it’s just too weird. I like Andrew Garfield, he’s one of the best younger actors working today, and I like that he’s capable in leading a big budget superhero flick, but also to make a smaller movie like this work. And to be fair, he is the main reason I finished the movie. Not only this is one of my favorite movies of all time but it’s one of my favorite Denzel Washington films of all time . I remember back in the day when I saw this for the first time it ws the film that show me that Denzel can do action. ITs also crazy to watch the Equalizer 3 a couple of months ago where he is reunited with Dakota Fanning and than go back to this film where Denzel worked with her as a child and see that the repor they had with each other is still there 20 years later . The Late Tony Scott made a film that was reveting and emotional but I gotta say the choppy and fast paced editing was too much at times . Late Night With the Devil I was honestly not expecting to like this, lol. Figured it would just be another drop in the try to try too hard bucket, but thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. Didn't rely on boring, played out horror movie tropes. Had an unusual and interesting story line, flowed well, actors were convincing, kept me very engaged (yea, surprising). #QuickMovieReview BOY KILLS WORLD (dir. Moritz Mohr) Got to say I rather enjoyed #BoyKillsWorld. For better or worse, it’s absolutely bonkers and a lot - possibly too much - to take in at times but vibe with it and you’ll have a good time. The hyperactive energy and quirky humour swing wildly from endearing to annoying throughout but when it’s at full speed it slaps pretty hard, with impressively executed fight sequences, cool world building, and Bill Skarsgård fully committing to the bit. I will never look at a cheese grater the same way again though. Score: ★ ★ ★ ½

Challengers (2024) par Luca Guadagnino. 🎬🍿🎞️ Ma note : 3/5 Amour, Gloire et Tennis ! J’ai passé un bon moment devant Challengers ! Des films dans l’univers du Tennis, il y en a pas tant que ça. Le dernier qui me revient en tête c’est l’excellent biopic La Méthode Williams avec Will Smith (2021). D’où ma curiosité d’aller découvrir le film en salles. J’ai été émerveillé par la direction artistique du film notamment sur les matchs. Whaou, coup de chapeau ou plutôt coup de raquette pour le travail monstre effectué. Les caméras embarquées comme si nous étions les joueurs qui frappent dans la balle c’est une idée géniale. La façon de filmer les personnages est d’enchaîner et alterner entre des plans larges et d’autres très serrés pour mieux cerner les émotions d’un personnage est excellente. En gros, la caméra était la balle de tennis littéralement. Globalement, la reconstitution de ce qui fait un tournoi de tennis est là y compris les off(s) et autres tractations internes (négociation,contrat, News TV). Il y’a de la tension et il y a une très belle alchimie entre Tashi, Art et Patrick. Les acteurs sont bons. Ce n’est encore une fois pas ce film qui me fera dire que Zendaya est une grande actrice mais je l’ai trouvé convaincante. J’ai eu énormément de mal avec l’histoire. Trop puérile et peu crédible. Mitigé aussi sur la fin du film. Je m’attendais à tout sauf à cela et cette issue ne m’a pas transporté émotionnellement. Regrettable. Le travail sur le son est bon même si à la longue petite overdose d’un theme qui revient trop souvent à mon goût. En conclusion, sans être une tête de série, ce Challengers de Luca Guadagnino nous offre des séquences renversantes et transpirantes d’ingéniosité. Une réalisation sublime qui valide l’énorme coup droit gagnant du film.
