Remembering a day of planting this winter - using our raised seed beds 🌱🌰 We planted seedling chinquapin oak, paw paw, and neighbor shagbark hickory in new air prune raised beds. Winter is a great time for seeding and fall works well for sowing as the seeds have time to naturally stratify. We snapped some Polaroids of the day that Bobby and Rance built the raised seed bed - what a fun memory. We’re bringing in spring with a throw back to winter! ❄️ 🌷 December happens to be the season we have time to plant along fencerows at Oakland Farm. Every Winter Solstice! This year we planted about 80 trees - Catalpa, Black Walnut, a variety of Oaks, and Tulip Poplar. When we started the nursery 10 years ago, one of our goals was to replant on the farm - supporting wildlife and grow shade for livestock. It’s important to protect newly planted trees as much as we can from cattle, deer, and the elements. That’s why we chose to plant these alongside an existing electric fence. Bobby has also been building another fence on the other side of the trees.
