Varadhan Middle School in Pillaichavadi, Pondicherry! Under the CSR activity of Chemfab Alkalis Limited, the Annapradokshana Charitable Trust joined hands to plant three hundred native evergreen species on April 26, 2024. On the occasion Mr. Kannapan, Admin Hr Department and Mr. Ilango Manager, Civil Department from Chemfab Alkalis Limited initiated the project by planting trees. We were honoured to have Mr. Senthamizh Selvan school incharge extend welcome speech, Mr. L. Pravinkumar founder cum Director of Annapradokshana charitable trust enlightened us about the Akira Miyawaki Forest project and the benefits of native, evergreen species for our children's future. Can you guess what we were doing with the cardboard frames? On Tuesday we hosted an educational volunteer day for 10 super enthusiastic Pfizer volunteers. We used 50cm x 50cm cardboard frames to conduct FIT Counts - Flower-Insect Timed Counts. 🌺 🐝 This Citizen Science initiative is coordinated by @allirelandpollinatorplan and @biodatacentre inviting people to contribute to important data collation on insect variety and abundance from gardens, parks, schools, businesses. With insects numbers declining we need to measure in order to manage the solution. And there’s a cool app to make it super easy to do this 10 minute exercise. 😎 The results were very interesting with #Elderflower having the most visits from insects followed by Bird cherry and then hawthorn. The group also mixed in leaf mulch into the raised beds of the Tree Nursery, weeded around 500 oak saplings, planted Wildacres wildflower seed in module trays, and even started the dig on pond number 37! And the sun shone ☀️ what a bonus! Thanks to the brilliant Pfizer group for choosing Wildacres and for all your hard work and great company. Happy Arbor Day! To celebrate, we're featuring the United States' largest cherry tree as this week's #SpeciesOfTheWeek. Black cherry (Prunus serotina) can grow anywhere from 60 to 90 feet tall. They have an oval silhouette, made up of finely toothed, dark green and shiny leaves. In late April and early May after the leaves have emerged, black cherries sport small white flowers that grow in hanging clusters called racemes. The racemes are typically four to six inches long. Each fragrant flower has five petals. It's a great time of year to observe black cherry trees and their delicate flowers. If you'd like to see one up close, head to our Garrett Family Preserve. TNC's critical land manager Damon Noe planted hundreds of trees that yield lipid-rich fruits at this preserve to support birds that migrate through each fall. Our partnership go beyond the forest! In Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk (@embassywaikiki) effort to engage their guest and to reinforce their commitment to endemic & native reforestation, they planted a small rooftop garden of rare endemic and native plants. ALULA Possibly one of the strangest looking plants, a full head of succulent leaves crowns from the top of a stem – like a cabbage. This endemic Hawaiian plant is one of the rarest plants in the world, at least in the wilderness. The natural pollinator of the alula, a type of hawk moth, has become extinct—hampering the plant's ability to reproduce. Many steps have been taken to try and propagate it so that it can be reintroduced back to its native habitat in Hawaii. Embassyʻs Alula may be the only one in existence in Waikiki! IHI MOLOKINI (Portulaca molokiniensis) These endemic plants are federally endangered and are restricted to coastal rocky areas. These upright succulents are one of the most exotic looking plant specimens from Hawai’i PALAPALAI FERN Palapalai is a native fern and very important plant in Hawaiian culture, primarily for Hula. It is one of the plants Kapu (sacred) to Laka, the goddess of hula, it is also used to adorn the Hula altar and dancer as well and is highly sought after for making lei. Many songs and chants also refer to palapalai for its beauty and cultural importance. Careful, often retailers may be selling “palapalai” but it is not the native version. This eastern red bud is one of my favorite things about our home. We moved in on a snowy Valentine's Day in 2021, and that first spring in the house was magical. Having only seen the house in fall and winter, we had no idea what was going to bloom. This tree sits right outside of the living room window, and I look forward to watching it bloom every spring. Recently, a woman stopped by @fountandfill for a refill and mentioned that she thought I lived in her old home. What a coincidence! She wasn't who we bought our home from but had lived there years prior. We talked about the property, and I asked if the tree was there all those years ago. Turns out, she is the one who planted it! She shared with me that she chose the sapling when she was pregnant with her firstborn and planted it that spring. This tree grew alongside her and her growing family for years. 🥰 It's Arbor Day, and although this was a few weeks ago, this interaction has me thinking about a book I read, "The Hidden Life of Trees," by Peter Wohlleben. He is a German forest scientist and explains the science behind how trees communicate, feel, and nurture community much like we do as humans. A quote I keep coming back to, "walking in an old growth forest is like coming home." 🌳🌲 Trees are good for the environment. They are carbon vacuums mitigating climate change and sentinels of our river beds and streams protecting them from pollutants and run off. Trees are also good for people, offering shade, beauty, symbolism, and meaning. When I think of the home Jake and I are building, I think of the eastern red bud out front that was planted years before us with love and hope for the future. & that makes me really happy to know. Today is Arbor Day! Together with the @sourland_conservancy and a group of volunteers we planted and protected 200 native trees and shrubs. The species were a mix of overstory trees like swamp white oak and red oak, understory trees like flowering dogwood, and shrubs like lowbush blueberry. We also fenced around many naturally recruiting native seedlings of shagbark hickory, blackhaw viburnum, and spicebush. All in all we has a wonderful planting day filled with native plants, friends both new and old, and truly beautiful spring weather! Volunteers cleared the area of invasive trees and shrubs to make way for planting: 🪴14 3-gallon container trees. I knew a guy in college who was very studious and smart. We met in chemistry class and yes, he gave me a mixtape. We met up again, many years later, when I was finishing graduate school. He had wanted to go to medical school, but had not been accepted. He had since developed his own extremely successful business of digital photography and website development (when it was just starting!) I remember as we were catching up how he kept stating how incredibly and unexpectedly this line of work had developed for him. He kept saying how he was actually really good at it. After a while, it really started to sound like he was bragging. —> However- I’ll never forget the moment it hit me- right in the middle of the conversation- He was actually bewildered and astonished by his own success. He wasn’t bragging. At all. In fact, it was the opposite, he was very humbled. He was sharing his absolute shock and excitement at how this very unexpected career had taken off for him. I’ll always remember that moment because I learned to share in peoples’ joy. When people share their accomplishments, often times, it is because they are bewildered and astonished by their very own accomplishments. All of that to say - I planted about a dozen native trees last week. The physical work is a lot and they are all spread out and need fencing and watering. And, well, I can’t believe I did it! Is there anything better than laying under a beech tree on a warm day? American beech is a stately and versatile tree with an impressive leaf canopy and wide, low-growing branches. It’s not a fast growing tree - it only grows 12 - 24 inches each year. What it lacks in growth speeds is made up for in longevity. In fact, American beech trees can live for 200 years or more! These trees have a few identifying factors: their bark is uniquely gray and very smooth, and the leaves are dark green with a pointed tip. Beech trees are partially hollow, providing hiding spots and dens for local wildlife like opossums, raccoons, squirrels, and songbirds. ❗️Unfortunately, beech leaf disease can kill beech trees of all ages, though younger trees appear to die more quickly. Signs include geaf striping, curling, and/or leathery texture, and reduced leaf and bud production. It's also made the news - we've been featured in a Dairy News article that's covering the project: “With help from native planting specialists Koroneiki Developments and volunteers, the Storeys have planted 2.5km alongside the section of the Mangapiko Stream running through their farm, and plan to plant another 1km. Street trees (trees that grow between the road and sidewalk) are particularly vulnerable to the increased frequency and strength of storms, as they grow in a variety of stressful conditions such as limited space for their roots below ground, soil compaction, salt and nutrient pollution, and heavy pruning due to power lines. Planting a diverse range of native trees in our developed landscapes can alleviate these concerns, and they also provide benefits for both humans and wildlife. In the spring, serviceberries are flush with beautiful white flowers, creating a burst of color and signaling the beginning of the next season. Pollinators thrive on these flowers too, especially given the early timing of the blooms. Serviceberries are also a great alternative to the highly invasive Bradford pear tree (just by scent alone)! A strip of semi-natural woodland that divides part of the local conifer plantation. The term semi-natural is used to describe habitats in Ireland as basically every wild space has had the influence of humans. This habitat has such variation in structure and diversity compared to the more or less dead conifer plantation which surrounds it. With some ground flora which indicate its likely ancient woodland, with wood anemone, native bluebells and lesser celandine but also, range of other species. Not sure what fossit code this would go in as.. Today’s Sidewalk Nature: Tulip poplar, our state tree in full glory. That seed cluster near the black dog is what each flower will turn into after insects have (incidentally) moved pollen from here to there. (And each of those seeds is a helicopter, though not as helicopter-y as maple fruit. Both are samaras.) It’s in the magnolia family, but unlike some magnolias—even some that smell great—this one makes a LOT of nectar. Stick a finger inside to get the sticky sugar without breaking the flower off the twig? The taste is unforgettable. Hummingbirds eat from these flowers, but I haven’t seen any yet this spring. .
