This was the happiest day of my life. It wasn’t Mother’s Day. But it was the day this little guy made me a mom. I didn’t take any pictures on the day he was born over 21 years ago which was on a hot summer morning in August…and I don’t know who did. But I have gazed at his face more than any other, and finally decided to sketch this demo for my class @pastelsocietyofamerica this past Wednesday, when we began a new series based on themes in the works of Mary Cassatt, in anticipation of the exhibition of her work opening @philamuseum next weekend. “Ranunculus Left on the Mantel” Rembrandt soft pastels by @royaltalensna on a white sheet of Pastelmat made by @clairefontaine_france , of cut ranunculus purchased at the Union Square Green Market @unsqgreenmarket just a few short blocks from my class @pastelsocietyofamerica . After a light sketch, I added just a touch of alcohol to soften the sketch, then suggested the dark overhang of the fireplace mantel in the studio, and the vivid backdrop of satin, saving the best for last; an everyday composition in the tradition of a still-life vanitas implied in the cut stems (brevity of life), folded fabric (shroud) and fireplace (extinguished). Verbalizing the intuitive process behind a painting like this nocturnal landscape involves a lot of talking with my hands! (This is also how I spill wine and tea at the dinner table.) Here I'm doing a demo for an art group in Lubbock, with only 90 minutes to talk and paint. Most of them had never met me nor seen me work. Talking with my hands helps bridge the gap between thinking and painting. I once knew an accomplished artist who would move her hands up and down a canvas for as long as an hour, tracing out the composition before ever putting a mark down. While I understood her process. I don't do that. I just knock over glasses at dinner. FYI I started this demo with my foreground mountains already half-completed over a glowing orange underpainting. I couldn't show every step in the time alotted, and this painting was about composition and light in the sky. Last Tuesday night had the honour to zoom demonstrate and judge on line for @thepastelsocietyofaustralia a big thank you to all those (apparently 61 which has warmed my heart) who sat through a few hours of my demo of “Le Louvre Scholars” own reference. This was probably my most complex of demos so didn’t finish on the night and has taken me consideration over a number of days to complete. I pre filmed my watercolour process which was shown before the pastel application. Terry Ludwig pastels, I used many from the Best of best blues set and a few Art Spectrum pastels and Schmincke pastels. Lux Archival white paper 45x37cm. On the easel this weekend. Last week I collated a lot of photographs that’s been collecting over the years and put them in a folder for painting reference. It also lets me recall what that particular day was like and why I had taken a certain photo. This one was taken very recently from a walk in the Brent Reservoir. Still figuring out how to tackle trees and simplify them without loosing interest. I do think some of the shapes could have been a bit more interesting. That’s for the next painting. Afternoon skies. I am eagerly awaiting the dramatic clouds and incredible skies. The past couple of days have been shrouded in plain grey. The overcast greys have their own charm but I am looking for something with a bit more pizzazz. Learning from Jacob Aguiar has been a rewarding experience. Helps with understanding how to treat certain lighting conditions and overlap the warms right next to the cools. Love the freedom with which he approaches landscapes. With him it isn’t about blending, but big shapes and tones. This one is my attempt at a very quick sky study. The main approach was to keep it loose while achieving those subtle layers of colour shift that I could see in the sky. This was also my first time working on Lux Archival paper. I love working on textured surfaces such as UART and Pastelmat. Those have pretty much been my staple. Recently I decided to give this one a try as well as make some of my own surfaces. That deserves a post of its own. I have to say Lux Archival has a bit of a learning curve. The texture is definitely coarser than the 400. UART which I love. Thirty-some years ago, I had mandarin oranges for the first time, discovering their sweet, charming proportions in a huge outdoor market in Amsterdam during my junior semester studying abroad, and naively tried to bring a bag of them home on the plane to share with my folks. Needless to say, that bag never made it past Customs. The New Year is always a great time to imagine what’s possible! Imagining snow has become the reality this winter, not only when I was invited to create a snow scene for @wavehill ‘s “Winter Haven” newsletter back in October. Thought I’d share this creative “imagining” process where I transformed a summer snapshot taken at Wave Hill (since I only teach plein air there seasonally in the warmer months…I did not have many snowy scenes of my own to work from! ) And after removing color from the reference photo, and marking up the photo with light swatches, I created a scene in pastel of a multigenerational family enjoying themselves on the grounds, now covered with a blanket of snow.
