Handmade Louis 16th French Timber Panels The designs on these panels date back to 18th Century France, under the reign of Louis 16th. I was initially commissioned to create a set of 12 to dress up the columns of an arbour for a French-themed wedding in the south of the state. Standing 2.4m high, they are taller than anything pre-existing from the era, so I cherry picked my favourite motifs from several collections and married them together to get the height. I rendered them into panels of marine timber using anti-fade, outdoor signage inks for UV-protection, then cut them out and coated each with a non-yellowing acrylic clearcoat to keep off the weather. The swirling timber grain of the panels comes through to form part of the design and gives them a warm rugged look that blends so well with the era. Moreover, they are portable and can be moved to dress up various locations over the years. I have a few left in the studio if you’d like to see more. So happy to have finally finished my mural project I have felt passionate about. This was to transform the Child Health Centre I went to in Karrinyup into a visually pleasing and inviting space that reflects the mothers, babies and child health nurses true worth and value in the community. My vision was to incorporate the golden wattle, a symbol of resilience found in the Australian bushland, into the artwork. The Australian golden wattle holds significance as it represents the ability to thrive in challenging environments. It is fitting to highlight that the flowers day is the first day of spring, a symbol of new beginnings. Both concepts that resonate with the child health clinic. Through this mural, my goal was to see the space transformed into a nurturing space, highlighting the mothers and children’s value, while also promoting positive mental health. Here we go with another expression of one of my favourite mural designs. This time, I made it square then rendered it in two giant matching panels of marine timber, each one measuring 1.2m wide by 2.4m high. It was a commission for a lovely historic home in Maylands, with seven metre ceilings at the rear where we hung the pieces. I rendered them in fairly coarse-grained timber so that the grain came through to form part of the image and add to its warm, historic feel. Its rugged warmth fits in so well with the character of the home. This mighty beast was a collaboration between myself and artist @dushong_art and we were assisted by @sallyridgeart (who absolutely smashed painting Banksias, backgrounds and landscapes!) and awesome artist @matthewmcveigh The mural is located on an underpass at Whiteman Park Station, part of the METRONET Morley Ellenbrook line.
