An hour before we left for Birmingham with the Cajun Wheelers for a wheelchair basketball tournament, Adam’s new shoes were delivered via UPS. Both Luca and Caia got cast for new orthotics this afternoon by our awesome @cascadedafo orthotist. Caia is ready to move down a level of support after all her hard work over the last few months. She is getting a DAFO4 SMO brace this time and she was so happy to see that Cascade now have a dino print!! Luca got cast for a new set of Phat Brace KAFOs. I came back from a very important visit to do some baby sling teaching to see Luca on his feet for the first time in a month! He's pretty delighted to be up again. He got the ok from wound care to wear his splints again! Unfortunately he has definitely lost muscle in the last month, but we'll put in the work to earn it all back. It's a reminder that things can change so quickly. Post op swelling in his feet caused a pressure sore within hours and meant no splints for a month. Luca broke another rivet on his AFOs yesterday. It's literally only 2.5 weeks since our orthotist replaced them all with metal ones after Luca broke a load of the plastic rivets! Thankfully, since we are road tripping to Denver from tomorrow, our awesome orthotist was at our therapy center today and was able to replace it for us. The evolution of “why are you making me” to “I did that” in pictures. Adam has been capable of dressing himself but during the school week it was just faster for mommy to do it. He’s also heading to middle school next year so figured it was time he do his own braces. So this week has been independent dressing and braces boot camp. This morning mommy got a “thank you!” & a hug after he was dressed. This morning started with a trip to get his pelvic splint adjusted since he had grown & was wiggling out that wonky hip. He also had broken a grommet on his Phat braces. There’s the slightest start of a crack by his toes so we will see if it can be fixed up or if he will need to order another pair. On Tuesday afternoon, (literally 30 mins after we arrived home from Portland #crazyschedule), we headed out to see our awesome orthotist and Luca got his new Phat Brace AFOs. We were so impressed with their KAFOs and how well they work for him that we decided to try their AFO too. So far we love them. They are much lighter then his previous pair of GRAFOs and he seems to be doing really well in them so far. Luca broke the thigh strap off his Phat brace KAFO during PT yesterday and ended up finishing the session with a chattanooga strap wrapped around his leg to keep it on. We added another on the other side too, just in case! Thankfully we are already seeing our awesome orthotist today and I was able to text him a picture and send measurements and he will attach a new strap for us this afternoon. On Tuesday we went to splint clinic at @cascadedafo. Luca's new Phat Brace KAFOs had to be adjusted so we had to travel to Mount Vernon to our orthotists home office because he needed to use the tools at the office. The KAFOs were overlapping at the knees and the padding was slipping and needed to be reattached. Phat Brace used double sided sticky tape to attach it which was definitely not sufficient. Caia's new SMOs also surprised ius by arriving that morning, less then 2 weeks after she was cast for them, so she came along to get them fitted. Luca got his awesome new Phat Brace Kafo splints today and I am super impressed with them. They were definitely worth the long wait! They are so much lighter and less bulky then his previous sets. He fits much better in his wheelchair in then and he walked really well too. It's definitely going to take some getting used to putting them on be auw his leg goes in from the top. They also give him less thigh support, so he will have to adjust to that too, but so far so good. I'm so impressed that we plan to cast him for a set of their AFOs too. Adam John had a first tonight… he was an altar server at his first mass. He was so focused & it made us all proud. Mommy cried during mass. His two favorite parts to ring the bells & when Father announced how well he did on his first mass and the congregation clapped. He climbed up and down the stairs with Sophie’s hand like a champ. Yesterday Adam was able to get back into PT after a few weeks of cancelling due to insurance issues. First session with the new braces & he did wonderfully. He’s walking so well.
