Don't let anything stop you from following your dreams! 🎻 Twelve-year-old Emmanuel is passionate about playing the violin. Born with webbed fingers on his left hand, Emmanuel was having a hard time holding the instrument's bow. His challenges led him to Stephen Garcia, an upper limb specialist at the #HangerClinic in San Antonio, TX, where he was fit with a custom partial hand device with a @fillauer violin attachment! Now able to cradle the device more comfortably, Emmanuel is back practicing his notes and feels empowered to continue his passion for music. We can't wait to hear what you'll string together for us next, Emmanuel – keep playing! 🎼 #LLLDAM #MyNextLevel24 #HangerPediatrics

Craig Hunnicutt had both legs amputated below the knee three years ago due to complications from diabetes. Since then, the 62-year-old has worked to re-master not only his basic mobility, but also his ability to play the drums! "When I first met Craig in the hospital, he had a pair of drumsticks that he was drumming in the air," shared Craig's Grand Rapids, MI #HangerClinic prosthetist, Anna Kahl. Inspired by Craig's passion and goal to return to his band, Anna worked to get Craig seated behind the drums again, finding a device design that allowed the amount of knee flexion needed to use the foot pedal. In show of support for Craig's journey and success, Anna and her family went to see Craig's band play at a local venue, where he absolutely rocked it. Craig, it's a joy to witness your talent and tenacity – keep on drumming! 🥁 #LiveEmpowered #LLLDAM #MyNextLevel24

The #mynextlevel24 post this week for #LLLDAM is to highlight someone that has helped you through your journey. There are many people who have helped me in my journey over the past “almost” two years, but @tfberner is the woman who changed my life and probably doesn’t even know it. Theresa or “Momma T” brought amputee soccer to Columbus and since November of 2022, my life changed. I got so many new upgrades in my AFO at #HangerClinic, I have played amputee soccer in Poland with the @usamputeesoccer_women team and @usamputeesoccer, been to tons of events with @adaptivesportsconnection, and I go to more #columbuscrew games than I could ever dream of! Who would have thought that losing a leg would gain so many things! #keepmovingforward

Four-year-old Katarina loves string beans, painting, and playing with her siblings. Born with congenital above-elbow limb difference on her left arm, Katarina learned to adapt early on in life and has always been eager to try new things. With support from @varietydetroit and her longtime Livonia, MI #HangerClinic prosthetist Joseph Brenner, Katarina was recently fit with a new myoelectric arm! As she continues working through occupational therapy with @beaumonthealth pediatric OTR Ryan Barto, she is especially excited to be able to grip the handlebars on her scooter! Katarina’s parents say they’re very appreciative of the collaborative care, and grateful for the care and support Joseph has provided over the years to help Katarina reach her goals with her custom prosthetic devices. Katarina, you've come so far in just four years – we know there's nothing you can't tackle! 🧡🦾 #MyNextLevel24 #LLLDAM #HangerPediatrics 📸: See Katarina’s prosthetic devices through the years!

🧡🎗️ #LLLDAM Another reason @campnolimits has been so amazing? It’s not just for Charlotte and other members of the limb loss/limb difference community, but for their families as well. Being able to talk, both in and outside of support groups, at meals, and during daily morning warm ups where we gather together, sing, and dance creates such a powerful community on which we are able to lean. Hearing from others who are now adults and mentors/counselors at the camp speak about how they grew up attending camp themselves and what an impact camp has had on them is both heartwarming and inspiring. PS check out that sunset at Maryland Camp! 😍 🌅 In honor of Limb Loss Awareness month, and CNL celebrating 20 years, please consider donating to the No Limits Foundation to help raise money to send individuals to camp. $500 will send 1 person. *LINK TO DONATE: https://tinyurl.com/LLLDAM-donation (ALSO IN BIO) #LLLDAM #CNL #CampNoLimits #amputees #limbloss #limbdifferences #nosuchthingasnormal #childamputee #quadamputee #nolimits #hangerclinic

10-year-old Jemma was adopted from China when she was 21 months old. Born with spina bifida, she's dealt with contractures in her right leg and foot throughout her life, making it challenging to walk and stay mobile. Last year, Jemma was connected with our Milwaukee, WI #HangerClinic team, where clinicians Maria Fernanda Larraga Martinez and Tom Current fit her with a specialty prosthesis called a foot-on-foot prosthesis. This has made it easier for her to move and do the activities she loves. 🧡 Jemma also enjoys reading, swimming, and baking. The fourth grader also has a deep love for animals.🐾 Her #MyNextLevel24 mobility goal is to be able to carry things without her crutches and to work on weightbearing with both of her legs. She wants others to know, “People think that disabled means ‘not able,’ but I think a disability is just a bump in the road and you can actually do a lot of stuff with a disability!" We’re so excited for your future, Jemma, and we can’t wait to see you reach your goals! #LLLDAM #LiveEmpowered

New helmet, who dis? I didn’t think he could get any cuter but look at this guy 🥰 Ayden handled his new accessory like a champ today and is teaching his mama how to act cool and not cry! Unfortunately, during delivery, the doctors had to get Ayden out quickly due to his heart rate lowering which meant using forceps. This caused him to have a bad case of torticollis. We did physical therapy and saw a chiropractor for months but we still couldn’t fix the flat spot so here we are! Trying to remind myself we are so lucky to have a healthy/happy boy and that this is only temporary! 🤍🤍 #starband #fixinmymelon #fixinmyflat #hangerclinic #mamasboy #babyhelmet

For a baby so bubbly and sweet, you'd never know that little Lyla has been through so much in just nine months! Lyla was born with #craniosynostosis, a premature fusion of the bones in her head. At only eight weeks old, she underwent surgery to correct the condition. Her parents were then connected with the #HangerClinic team in White Plains, NY, where Lyla was fit with a custom cranial remolding helmet to help reshape and protect her skull. Lyla's mom, Delwara, said clinician Fiona Quinn has been amazing, and that Lyla lights up when she sees her at every appointment. Today, Lyla is nearing the end of her treatment, which has been going incredibly well. Her parents are eagerly looking forward to Lyla's first birthday coming up in June. We can't wait to see where life takes you, Lyla – keep smiling! 🧡 #HangerCranialCare

When Rachel Watts (@tri_to_adapt_to_ms) was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in December 2018, doctors told her she should plan to find a new hobby to substitute her love of running. Unwilling to give up her favorite activity, she pressed on. In 2022, Rachel connected with clinician Barry Campbell and the #HangerClinic team in Overland Park, KS and a whole new world opened up for her. She was fit with custom ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) and a shoulder brace that not only improved her mobility and running form, but allowed her to push harder to achieve her goals. Rachel continues to run, swim, and cycle – all which help combat the spasticity and chronic pain that she experiences from her MS. Her can-do attitude has carried her through incredible feats, including running the @chimarathon (and qualifying for the @bostonmarathon!) and countless other competitions. Earlier this month, Rachel competed in her first @worldtriathlon event – the Americas Triathlon Championship in Miami, FL – and took second place. Her next goal? Qualifying for @paris2024! “When I’m told something isn’t likely, I like to prove folks wrong!” Rachel shared. We love your tenacity, Rachel, and we’ll be rooting for you every step of the way! 🧡👏 #MSAwarenessMonth #LiveEmpowered

• @hangernews @realkatysullivan is making headlines at @chicagoshakes as the first woman with a disability to play Shakespeare’s Richard III at a major U.S. theater! 🎭 Born without her legs above the knee, Katy hasn’t let her differences stop her from achieving her goals, including becoming an actress, a Paralympian, and a @thetonyawards-nominated Broadway star. Last month, members of the limb loss and limb difference community and the Chicago, IL #HangerClinic team, including Katy’s prosthetist Ryan Caldwell, attended Katy’s production to show their support and enjoy a special meet and greet with her after the show. 🧡 Katy flawlessly used her custom-designed devices to bring her character to life during the show, going from microprocessor knees (MPK) to bejeweled MPKs, and ending on her prosthetic running blades. Keep shining, Katy! 👏 We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds. #LiveEmpowered 📸 credits: Justin Barbin (Photo 1), Liz Lauren (Photos 3-4)

"Just because you’re different doesn't mean you’re weak." – Sloane Rainey Nine-year-old Sloane was born prematurely at 30 weeks gestation. After a brain bleed led to complications, her parents were told that there was a high chance that Sloane would have cerebral palsy (CP). They started physical therapy as soon as Sloane came home from the hospital. By age two, Sloane was officially diagnosed with spastic diplegia CP and was fit with her first pair of ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) at the #HangerClinic in Cedar Park, TX. Since then, the third grader has fearlessly tackled every task she's set her mind to – from dancing, to scootering around the park, playing piano, and even rollerskating! "We are in awe of how easily she adapts to do things her way," shared Sloane's mom, Rebecca. Today, Sloane wears a supramalleolar orthosis (SMO) on her left foot and AFO on her right (fit by clinician Brittany Jones), and she is thriving as she develops her dancing skills and so much more. Sloane loves talking about her braces and helping educate others about #CerebralPalsy, and we’re so proud of her amazing advocacy efforts in her community and school. Dance on, Sloane! 💚💃 #CerebralPalsyAwarenessDay #HangerPediatrics

You hear this a lot among people who experienced amputation. We have trouble shaking the feeling that we’re somehow different, as if everyone else seems to know something — how to act, what to say, how to be connected — and that somehow we never got the memo. Do you ever feel like that? I know we’re most likely not the only ones. But it seems to be a big part of living with the symptoms that follow traumatic loss or situations. Is this feeling of being different just in our minds? The answer is different for each of us. Feeling “apart from” is (sometimes) just human nature. From time to time, almost everyone feels like they’re different from “most people.” Some people grew up feeling different because they were in fact different from the majority of other people. Maybe that’s you. Amputees are just people, and we have more or less the same needs and feelings and dreams as anyone. But what we went through… maybe did change us. Maybe it did make us a little bit different. Maybe that feeling we are so prone to — that other people seem to be on some wavelength we can’t hear — is, to some degree, real. Every amputee and trauma survivor knows there is a kind of nonverbal communication between people that functions something like Wifi — something we tap into when we’re with other people or in a group that lets us connect with them in a natural, unspoken way. This is what I call our Interbrain workings. What’s the interbrain? it’s the thing that people on the autistic spectrum may not be able to access easily. They tend to have a hard time reading other people or perceiving non-verbal signals about when it’s OK to talk, how close to stand, or what facial expressions mean. I’m just speculating here, but it seems like trauma might disrupt our access to the Interbrain as well. It definitely feels that way for a lot of amputees as if other people all got instructions for how to hang out together and those of us with limb differences have to figure it out by trial and error — usually a lot of error! Let me know if you want to know more? #

3/21/2024, 2:32:09 PM

We deserve better- Better care- better cooperation- better feedback- better emotionally involved people who aren’t just in it for the paychecks- better access to support and supplies & prosthetics- better programs for progress. We are more valuable than our insurance providers. We are more valuable than the dollar bill. A lot of people financially benefit from our loss in ways we’ll never benefit. Some couldn’t cut the mustard in other ways and chose our venue to hide in. But we’ll be expected to be happy and supportive to the ones in the field even when we don’t receive the same understanding supporting as the reason the field even exists. We deserve better in many many ways. Though it may seem impossible in the early stages of loss, finding empowerment in times of personal tragedy can be an invaluable tool in the healing process. Even if loss has no religious or spiritual connotations for you, it is still possible to transform the emotions that come with loss into a sense of serenity. I have been a below knee amputee for 12 years. I have More than 10,000 hours invested in understanding how to navigate through personal loss successfully. loss is something I know a lot about. While your circumstances may vary, the likelihood is that loss, even anticipating loss, will come with a great deal of pain and discomfort. I remember days leading up to the amputation of my leg were terrible and terrifying. I imagined only the worst case scenarios. And what I focused on, became my reality. In the early stages losing my leg– particularly in the days leading up to and following the surgery– my emotions ran high, and everyone around me was dealing with my loss in their own personal way. While losing something as personal as a limb is extremely difficult and emotionally frustrating. the way I dealt with my loss was being shared as my families memories as well. and the impact that I had on their lives fostered a sense of fear. When we experience loss or suffering in our lives, we often turn to those around us for help and support. However, when we endure personal loss, it is likely that you will not want to share openly or honestly what we’re experiencing and that will cause us and others we love and who love us to spend time in a period of delusion about our self worth and how to deal with any discomfort moving forward. Losing can be a tremendous lesson in what it actually means to live. It offers us a period of reflection that we don’t always have and the ability to tap into in our daily grind, and a chance to treasure what we have as much as what we’ve lost. It may not happen overnight, but it is possible that your thoughts of loss will change too – transcending acceptance to reach a point of genuine healing. #lossandrecovery #loss #found #amputeelife

Mbah’s story from our partners at @hangernews: When Mbah Diedudonne Fon (@fon_dieudonne_official) was 7-years-old, he contracted elephantiasis, a rare tropical disease, after a burn injury in his hometown of Guzang, a village in Bamenda, in the country of Cameroon. His leg was amputated above the knee. At age 31, Fon trekked from Colombia to Panama on crutches, at one point covering 124 miles in ten days, crossing rivers, and climbing hills through one of the world’s deadliest forests - the Darien Gap. Other refugees advised him to turn back, but the pain he had gone through in life fortified him. His brave story to keep going, in the harshest of circumstances, in search of a better life, has inspired many people around the world to #NeverGiveUp. In February 2023, with help from international organizations, Fon arrived in the U.S. and was connected with the @stepsoffaithfoundation and Laurel, MD #HangerClinic prosthetist Leah Meunier, to be fit for his first prosthetic leg. Fon’s restored mobility has lifted his spirits and given him hope. His wish is for others who read his story to never give up on themselves. Fon is now training to play for the @usamputeesoccer team, and we couldn’t be prouder of his determination and perseverance. 42-year-old Steve McLaughlin works in IT Support and enjoys historical reenacting, fencing, gaming, and building custom PCs. Last year, he lost his right leg below the knee after complications from diabetic neuropathy. Recently, he was fit with his first prosthesis by Apple Valley, CA #HangerClinic prosthetist Marco Camarena and resident Katie Swafford! Now back to walking, Steve is continuing to live bravely and looking forward to crushing more goals. His message for others is to remember, “Our limitations are only put on us by ourselves. Always be yourself... unless you can be @batman, then be Batman.” 😊 #LiveEmpowered

ADVOCATE FOR YOUR CHILDREN🗣️ I can’t say it enough! If you think something is off, say something to your doctor. If your doctor doesn’t listen - change doctors! Seriously… we did. Here’s the story: I noticed Gus had a very flat head in the back and when I called for a referral to a specialist I was met with “he’ll be fine”. They wouldn’t even see him!!! At his next visit I showed the doctor and was told “huh… it’s flat but it’s not that bad” so I changed Pediatricians and when we got the referral to the specialist he was immediately being fitted for a helmet. 23 hours a day for over 5 months Gus wore that helmet. He didn’t even mind! So when I noticed Chippys head was flat I brought her to the same specialist immediately. Not even 3 months later and she was out of her helmet with a perfectly round noggin too! Thank you to all the people we passed in grocery stories, tjmaxx checkout lines and beyond who would stop and say “hey! My child had a helmet too!!!” This community has been nothing short of amazing. Mamas, Daddy’s & Caregivers of all kinds- speak up if you think something is off- advocate for your babies🫶🏼 #HangerClinic #BostonChildrensHospital #Plageocephaly

Was amazing to meet so many awesome people in the paraclimbing community this weekend! I was able to finish second in AL1 category allowing me to compete in May at home in SLC and June in Innsbruck Austria with the national paraclimbing team. Super excited to continue to train and progress my climbing. Special thank you to @adaptiveclimb_thefront and the adaptive comp team for all the coaching and providing a space/community to train with. Stoked for the new adventures climbing is taking me on and grateful as always to the people and organizations that make them possible. #nolegsnoproblems #USAClimbing #Paranationals #TeamCAF #AdaptiveClimbTheFront #attitudeofgratitude #HangerClinic #AdaptiveClimbing #AmputeeStrong #MPDTraining #AdaptiveAthlete

Nothing can stop 7-year-old Nolan! ✨ After being involved in an ATV accident last year, Nolan lost his left leg below the knee and later had a revision via a hemipelvectomy amputation due to an infection. The Des Moines, IA #HangerClinic team, including clinician Nick Ackerman and resident Hunter Shaull, recently fit Nolan with his new prosthesis 🦿– allowing him to return to his favorite hobbies like working on his family’s farm and playing his favorite sports. Not long ago, Hunter visited Nolan’s second grade class to teach them about prosthetics and how the technology assists with everyday tasks. Nolan’s @pellachristian school classmates and teachers, who have been involved and supportive of his journey from the beginning, were excited to learn more and even helped design his next socket! 🎨 We’re proud to be in your corner, Nolan. Never stop showing the world what you’re made of – you’ve got this! 🧡 #HangerPediatrics #LiveEmpowered SWIPE ➡️ to see the cool socket designs created by Nolan’s classmates! ✏️
