In an incredible milestone for our Department of Chemistry, six papers with major contributions by two faculty members from the department have been published in a single volume of ACS' Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters! Two of these papers are co-authored by Dr. Debdas Ray, and address challenges in organic semiconductor materials. One paper introduces a novel approach to achieving white light emission from a single component, a crucial advancement for energy-efficient lighting technologies. The second explores organic photothermal switching materials, paving the way for enhanced energy efficiency in various applications. The remaining four papers, co-authored by Dr. Tushar Debnath, delve into the properties of perovskite nanocrystals and their use as quantum dots. One of the studies investigates the formation and properties of Ag vacancies in Pb-free double perovskite nanocrystals, revealing insights into the vibrational dynamics and potential applications in initiating atomically precise photochemical reactions. Another paper presents a technique to control the size of quantum dots within perovskite nanocrystals, showcasing the tunability of their optical properties for advanced optoelectronic applications. The third focuses on the nanoheterostructures of perovskite nanocrystals, while the fourth explores how the water sensitivity of perovskites can be leveraged for controlled chemical transformations. BOLEX WORKSHOP IN BRIDGWATER! SOMERSET! 16mm film is 101 years old today*! Whilst digital has become almost default, the photochemical still holds a place in the heart of many a filmmaker. There is an opportunity to learn 16mm filmmaking with me during a 16mm filmmaking workshop this March. In 1923, 16mm film was released by Eastman-Kodak as a cheaper alternative to 35mm film and a more accessible format for amateur filmmakers. While film has become less popular over the years with the rise of DSLR and smartphone filming, there is a timeless aesthetic with film you don’t get with digitally generated images. The BAFTA Award winning drama ‘Bait’ by Mark Jenkin in 2019 was filmed entirely on a hand-cranked 16mm Bolex, using 130 rolls of B&W Kodak stock, and manually processed in an antique Bakelite rewind tank. The 16mm workshop will develop your knowledge in filmmaking, while giving you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience filming with a H16 Bolex clockwork 16mm camera, learn how to film and process the exposed negative using Caffenol, an eco developer, then view the footage on a Steenbeck flatbed film editor. No previous film experience is required for this course. All equipment will be provided, everything will be digitised and made available to you after the workshop. This two-day workshop with me will take place at The Engine Room in Bridgwater on Saturday and Sunday, 16th and 17th March 2024. The cost for the whole weekend is £180.
