Pilates Myth #4 This one is equal parts right and wrong. A Pilates shape can be held as a pose to stretch the body (on or off your reformer), and it can also be used as a form of calisthenics. However, once the spring is on the machine and you are pushing/pulling into the machine or straps, you are effectively loading the muscles, like strength or resistance training. So, holding a pose in a Pilates shape = extending a body part to it's full length, or depending on the shape, developing strength, endurance and flexibility. Working the body on the machine with springs on = loading into muscles

Pilates Myths #2 No one owns any movement, strength or fitness modality. Movement, exercise, looking after your physical and mental health is for everyone. In fact, Muscle mass decreases approximately 3–8% per decade after the age of 30 and this rate of decline is even higher after the age of 60. The best way to counter this, is to strength train. Which in Pilates terms means pop those springs on and push/pull! *The irony of this comment is that it was actually developed by a man (Joe Pilates) for men.

Pilates Myths #1 This week we are going to be addressing a few myths and beliefs around Reformer Pilates and health and fitness. This one is a pretty big myth. It’s anatomically impossible to only work one area of the body. All parts of the body work to support each other in movement and exercise. Reformer Pilates works all areas of the body. By the end of your session, you’ll end up with a full body workout, and your core is a part of your body. So, your core will get a workout, but so will other parts of your body.

Have you done one of our Burn classes? If you have you’ll know why these classes sell out fast! A combination of weights and reformer, these classes are designed to build muscle and get you sweaty! Think functional movement, strong spring tension and lots of planks. And we are now adding another Burn class to the schedule from Monday 6pm next week. COMMUNITY HYGIENE; We pride ourselves on the high standards of hygiene we have at our studio to keep you fit and healthy and minimize any transmission of any viruses. We have air purifiers, hand sanitizers, constant fresh air flowing through the studio due to windows and doors open during your workout, machines spaced at 1.5 meters and constant cleaning of our studio. One thing we have learned over the past few years is that viruses can be transmitted through close contact and we want to continue to minimize exposure in your studio to any virus. We need you to do your bit too. When you come into the studio, you just need to do a few things; 1. Make sure you bring your own towel, drink bottle and socks to the studio for your workout (we have water for you and you can purchase Pilates socks at the front if you like, any socks are fine though) 2. Wipe your machine down before and after you start your workout. You can use our nice smelling hand sanitizers also which you will find everywhere in the studio. 3. Please keep your socks on during your workout. (Feet can also carry bacteria like hands and are all prone to fungus infections which we know no one is keen to contract) 4. If you aren’t feeling well, stay home. We can extend your pack in the event of sickness. Your body needs to fight your virus, not your workout. Do you need a little New Year inspiration? Then meet Audrey. 88 years young and planking like a pro. When Audrey first contacted me she said "I am ancient but reasonably agile". Trust me there is nothing "ancient" about Audrey. She springs into our classes with energy and enthusiasm, she knows her limitations (which are few) but is absolutely committed to pushing herself to stay fit, healthy, strong and mobile. I am inspired by Audrey every time we work together and I know that her joie de vivre rubs off on other people and has even earned her the nickname of The Famous Audrey (aka TFA) over in Australia (where she has just come back from after 3 weeks of travelling). As we head closer to the end of year, and we are all celebrating different milestones, you may be feeling like you need to go harder in the gym or to restrict certain food groups to compensate. This mindset can be quite toxic and lead to disappointments. To look after yourself, change your perspective. Try and see things more with a balanced mindset. Pilates for daily life 🌟 How can we use Pilates in our daily lives? We all use muscles and movements every moment of every day, without a second thought (aren’t bodies amazing!), but sometimes we may need a little bit of help to bring awareness to help reinstate healthy movement patterns for everyday activities /movements / positions that we adopt habitually on a daily basis. A traditional pilates matwork class often focusses on exercises performed on the floor, which feels great… But, when it comes to training the body for functional movements it can be really effective to train the body in positions we spend much of our day in - ie. sitting, standing, walking. Hence us creating our ‘Pilates for daily life’ classes on a Thursday at 10.40am. Working mainly in standing and sitting, the class takes participants through many pilates exercises, including movements to strengthen, lengthen, stretch, mobilise, tone, all the whole creating greater flexibility, body awareness and balance. Regular class attendees will tell you that this class is in no way an ‘easy option’ and you will work just as hard as in a ‘normal’ floor based mat class! But certainly we guarantee this class will see you reap the benefits, bringing more confidence to movement and bringing huge benefits for daily movements. This class can be attended by anyone and EVERY BODY is welcome, however it may be particularly helpful for people who: 🌟 May struggle to get up and down off the floor 🌟 Have limited range of movement in specific areas 🌟 Have lost confidence with movement or where there is fear of larger scale movement 🌟 are Returning to exercise after a surgery or injury (please consult your GP/Dr first) We have a max of 4 people in the class, to ensure we can adapt and modify exercises to suit peoples needs. As you age, your body changes and so does your bodies reaction to movement and exercise. Your hormones will fluctuate in their operational levels and sometimes you will find that the hormone cortisol will work overtime when you are stressed and will put on more fat around your mid section. We do not support fad diets or disordered or restrictive eating or detoxes (this is what your liver is for) or insane exercise regimes to counter this. We support a consistent and long term application to your preferred muscle loading practice. The best way to counter stress and this shift is to build muscle and find a mindful movement practice that you are committed to. Reformer Pilates certainly contributes to both muscle building and stress relief. Any exercise or movement practice that loads into your muscles consistently (think strength training 2-3 times a week) and progressively (increase your spring loading a little more on a few exercises in every class or turn up to a Burn class once a week) will help you to keep your muscles strong. 📸 @kristyntaylorphotography
