Emma pink Portuguese marble The fun part about picking out the right block of marble for the right piece is how the veining works with the movement of the simple female form. Here the implied dress had the veining where I was hoping I could shape it so that it looked like the fabric and an added design element. This is even more exotic when the Portuguese marble is this intense salmon pink color and the marks of my tools also contrast with the polished surfaces. I have always been inspired by fashion and photos of women in long dresses, which is something rare to see in person these days. Thanks to many fashion historians including #rachel.elspeth.gross to see some amazing photos by fashion designers throughout the ages that I'd never seen. And shows I don't attend #Schiaparelli I still have a collection of #vogueitalia from the 80's and 90's (before the internet) when I first lived in Italia. Sometimes the natural light adds a softer drama than some of the flashes can achieve. I am often asked how long does it take me to make a sculpture like this. Well, I began this pink Portuguese marble figure in 2018, quarrying the marble, shipping to my studio in CO, and working on her off and on for a few years. After months of polishing, she is ready to sign, so it will be my first 2022 marble. I still have a day of work to get the pin set. And, then she will be photographed. She is a particularly nice piece of the Portuguese marble. I always appreciate a beautiful block of marble. It makes it a joy to carve, leaving the breaks and textures of the tools in contrast to the smooth polish. A marble with good integrity = a sculpture with integrity.
