ON COURTS: For Martyna Alexander, the creation of spaces and rigid visual systems that are both fantasy and derived from a deep connection to real ancestral environments and lifestyles is a way to explore how our psyche is affected by our families’ past and connection to place. She likens these disconnected but very real systems of maintenance in many forms that were used for sustaining life with our hands and bodies, etc. to actions that resurface in strange or sometimes unsettling ways in our modern lives, separate from our predecessor’s lifestyles or tribulations. Alexander believes that by understanding sports, place-making, and fantasy as tools that deconstruct or replicate patterned behaviors of past lives we can begin to understand the ways in which they affect the environment, people or self and can help us reflect on our inner or communal needs. ARTIST OPEN CALL: The Emerging Artist Fellowship 2024 provides financial support and professional mentorship for artists to develop their individual practices and identifies, elevates and promotes Detroit-based artistic excellence. Hosted by PLAYGROUND DETROIT, artists will receive an exhibition and financial stipend to support them at a critical point in their career. Three (3) Emerging Detroit artists will be selected to receive $5,000 Fellowship Awards in 2024. The Fellowship will prioritize applications from BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists and exhibition proposals that explore concepts such as climate change advocacy and/or social justice-centered work. Awardees that will be recognized are early-on in their careers, have ambitious goals and demonstrate artistic potential through creative risk-taking along with a clear vision of what they seek to produce and present. Each selected artist will: • Present a New Body of Artwork • Receive $5000 Stipend Each • Gain Industry Experience and Knowledge • Access Professional Mentorship • Participate in Community Programming Accepted proposal submissions by Visual Artists include the following categories: gallery exhibition, off-site exhibition, and/or site-specific installation. “The strips came out of a habit I have. I’ve always fidgeted with materials, maybe as a way to calm anxiety. Straws, receipts, plastic. I would rip, fold, and chew on trash essentially. I was in a creative rut and tore apart a canvas and started studying the unseen patterns they would make. Quickly, I had the idea to reassemble them to create a new image. If new ideas present themself, I have to follow my intuition and let that kernel of an idea take over me. “One of the concepts I am exploring in my “Stripped” series is fragmentation as a means to wholeness; sometimes breaking down is the best way to build something better. By using discarded materials and reworked paintings, I am able to create a new story while still preserving the history of its prior form. Every torn piece of canvas and reapplication, provides new challenges. Jones was the recipient of the 2023 CICF Artist Ambassadors Travel Grant, awarded ArtsConnect’s “Artist to Watch” in 2022, the recipient of the 2022 Playground Emerging Artist Fellowship, supported by the Knight Foundation and the recipient of the prestigious Museum Purchase Award from Cranbrook Art Museum in 2022. Jones’s works are in the permanent textile collections of Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, MI), Richmond Art Museum (Richmond, IN) and The Book Tower Detroit (Detroit, MI). Julian Jamaal Jones memorializes Black culture by presenting fresh perspectives while presenting creative freedom within traditional landscapes. His unique practice communicates through the historical language of African American quilting tradition by implementing abstract forms and vibrant colors in his works to bypass the preconceptions and open conversations around his Black experience. IF I AM - 33x26 ( acrylic on wood ) This piece is about being seen. We grow up in a society that subscribes a narrative to you based on biases and inert thinking. The colours reflect the moods that reflect within each of us as we navigate through this society. The camouflage-esq shapes are a reflection of the mask/blending we have to do in order to create a safe space for ourselves. Sometimes we blend in just to survive the climate we are born into.
