➕Child-led travels have been our thing for years now, and this time, the luck of the draw led us to the charming city of Cincinnati in the Midwest. From the airport, we hopped on public transportation and made our way to @overtherhine. Our lunch spot of choice was the amazing @sacredbeastdiner, where we enjoyed their delicious Double Cheeseburger with all the fixings on the side (Miles likes his cheeseburger plain, I like all the things) a side of crispy fries and a sprite w/no ice. After our lunch, we found ourselves walking towards our bus stop when we realized that one of the sneaker stores on our list, @allinstyleotr, happened to be conveniently located along the way. Of course, we couldn’t resist making a quick stop! Afterward, we hopped back on public transportation and headed to our cozy Airbnb for a well-deserved evening of rest. Our dinner choice was mouthwatering Chinese takeout, setting the stage for an exciting day ahead. Welcome to Cincinnati, Miles!
Late last month on a Thursday evening I checked out two gallery openings and got to immerse myself in the rich local art scene. The first exhibit was at @artworkscincy featuring the works of @jimtucker_studio and the kids he mentored. Earlier in the year Jim had reached out to ask myself and @melaninandhalide for street photos of Walnut Hills residents to use as a source of inspiration for the piece he was working on. I was incredibly honored to have played a part, albeit a minuscule one. Thanks to @cincyphil for the photo he took of us! The second exhibit I attended was organized by @region.ninety featuring the works of artists from Indianapolis, Louisville and of course Cincinnati. Lots of thought provoking art and displays of talent. Also everyone looked so dang fashionable 😩. “A Perfect Day In College Hill” uses the neighborhood’s history of using some of the earliest weather-tracking systems in the country to show elements of the unique neighborhood. The rooster represents the active farmers market. The Big Dipper within a drinking gourd pay tribute to College Hill’s role in the Underground Railroad. Mortar boards signify the seven schools and colleges for which College Hill was named. The Crosley Automobile is a nod to onetime resident Powell Crosley. Scott Donaldson, project manager. Is Schulhoff Tool Rental getting a new look? This longstanding neighborhood business opened in 1935 as an electrical repair shop, evolved into a full-service hardware store and now specializes in tool and equipment rental and sales, including generators, scaffolding and even party equipment. In 1973, the exterior was covered in cedar siding that gave the business its iconic Western appearance. A mural by @timparsley and a team of @artworkscincy apprentices, painted in 2008 on the Woodburn façade, juxtaposes images of nearby rooflines and historic photos of the area. For #LaborDay, we are honoring healthcare workers in our community. "Healthcare Heroes Save the Day" was created to celebrate @stelizabethnky’s 160th Anniversary in 2021. The mural illustrates the heart and soul that healthcare workers have given to patients and community during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. As a neighbor in the @walnuthills community, ArtWorks created the Gilbert Avenue Gateway Mural to showcase the community spirit and complement the already vibrant neighborhood. Working with Walnut Hills Community Council president, and visual and performing artist @kathrynegardette, the design is inspired by and incorporates West African visual symbols known as Adinkras, that are beautiful welcoming visuals into the neighborhood, building on its the strong sense of pride and African American culture and leadership. The mural production team and subject reflect the strength, diversity, and resilience of the Walnut Hills community building off of past and current community engagement in the neighborhood. Back to school season has us thinking about the original "Wall of Education," designed and painted in the late 1970s by Joyce Young, Gilbert Young, and a team of students. It was a vivid and colorful mural in Clifton celebrating the lives and talents of Cincinnati's diverse youth and disciplines of education. This updated "Wall of Education" honors that legacy with vibrant images of actual Cincinnati students engaged in 21st century pursuits of learning. "Guardians" have also been painted at intervals along the wall to show the importance of adults supporting children throughout their educational and personal development. There is lots of activity near Gilbert Ave and McMillan street in Walnut Hills - renovations and new construction. One of the most exciting project is the new home of @artworkscincy . “Work began last year on the building, constructed in 1909 for the Bolce Paint Co. ArtWorks bought it in 2021 from Woody Melson, who operated Race Refrigeration from the premises after his father, Woodrow Melson Sr., bought it more than 50 years ago. The $9 million renovation is scheduled to finish late next year or early 2025, housing the nonprofit responsible for bringing hundreds of murals and other public art to Greater Cincinnati.” (from ArtWorks website)
