Since the dismasting of my Class40 Fuji, ZEROchallenge, I have experienced both challenging days and heartwarming acts of kindness. To create the legal structure which will host my project, finish the boat papers, wait patiently for the list of regattas in which I will participate and begin to outline the organization of this great 2024 year! "The arrival in Durban was timed to be at first light today January 15th, and wasn't without drama, as after such precious service, the engine V-belt broke when Ari was just 8 miles from port. Thankfully the NSRI was able to launch one of their rescue boats and gave Ari the final tow to the international jetty of Port Durban. We wish to thank everyone involved at every stage of the assistance provided selflessly by all those involved in Ari's safe arrival in Durban. Finnlines, a partner in the ZEROchallenge project, previously transported Fuji to Bilbao on their eco-friendly ro-ro vessel Finneco II. 🌎 Interesting fact: the routes of Finncanopus and Fuji almost overlap, facilitating this anticipated meetup. The main aim? Topping up my diesel reserves for the remaining 300-nautical mile journey to Durban. 🌊 The last fuel-up came from Japanese vessel Tomi Maru on 28.12.2023, a game-changer for this journey. Plan with Finncanopus is to transfer approximately 200l of diesel and some motor oil to Fuji. Transfer method will be determined on-site based on weather and sea conditions. They have diverted they route around Cape of Good Hope because of the situation at the Red Sea. Yesterday morning I saw the news about this and we have been in contact with them. Finnlines is one of the partners in ZEROchallenge project and they transported Fuji from Finland to Bilbao with one of they new green hybrid ro-ro vessels Finneco II. Unbelievably Finncanopus and Fujis routes to Durban almost intersect and there will be a rendezvous. The main target of seeing Finncanopus in middle of Indian Ocean is to fill my diesel reserves so that I’m able to motor safely to Durban, which is still about 300 nautical miles away. Last time I got fuel from Japanese fishing vessel Tomi Maru on 28.12.2023, which has been savior of the trip to this point. We are planning with Finncanopus to move about 200l of diesel and some motor oil to Fuji. Method of the delivery will be decided on site since the sea state and weather for fill-up is this time nice. Solo sailor Ari Känsäkoski faced a harrowing challenge during the Global Solo Challenge around the world race, as his class 40 boat was dismasted in the Indian Ocean a week ago. Determined to continue back to Africa, he lifted the mast on board, jury-rigged his vessel and navigated against strong currents, winds and waves heading north for better conditions. He had limited amount of diesel on board, and he needed about half of it to avoid drifting back to east. Running low on diesel, race organizer and Ari's shore team worked tirelessly to find a solution. A ray of hope emerged when the Japanese Coast Guard informed MRCC Reunion that Tomi Maru No 58, a high sea fishing vessel, was just 65 miles away. They were ready to help! In a critical ten-hour night and day operation amidst challenging waves, Ari successfully received the diesel delivery from Tomi Maru crew. Ari’s comments after the diesel delivery operation with the crew of Tomi maru No 58: We executed the operation last night in the high waves until it got dark. Those were the biggest waves during the entire race! The ship was 300 m away and at times I didn’t even see it. First, we did a test transfer with two canisters and gradually increased the number of canisters. On the last transfer we put a little too many canisters and they went under my boat. Fortunately, I got them out of there so that the rope didn't catch on anything. It is not easy to lift 20 kg canisters from the waves. We were ferrying canisters back and forth until all of mine where full and after that they send all they had. They gave all the fuel they could, a total of 310 liters. Viimeisin päivitys mereltä: Ari raportoi juuri tiimille ja kisajärjeställe joutuneensa ukkosmyrskyyn (50+ kn). Ari on päättänyt jäädä ajoankkuriin ja myrskyn mentyä ohi pääsee arvioimaan purjeiden ja nostinten vahinkoja. Muuten Fujissa kaikki hyvin. Arin päivitys perjantai-illalla 22 aikoihin: Tulin juuri kannelta. Codella menty 21+ solmua, kunnes ei enää jaksanut ajaa käsin. Purjeen vaihto steikkariin. Sen jälkeen sai jätettyä pilotille. Aaltoja tuli niin monesta suunnasta, että en edes erota niitä toisistaan. En ehtinyt siinä tilanteiden alettua laittamaan @ursuit  kuivapukua päälle, joten kaksi vaatekertaa märkänä. Nyt lepoa. Tuulen pitäisi laskea yöllä, jolloin saan toivottavasti coden taas auki. Lauantain terveiset: Rankka yö takana. Tuuli 38+ solmua ja pilotilla haasteita isoissa aalloissa.  @remoranoy hydrogeneraattoriin oli tarttunut kalastusverkkoja, mutta onneksi se on jämäkkää tekoa ja toimii ilman ongelmia tämän tapauksen jälkeen.💪🏾 Isopurjeen kisko hajosi vahinkojiipissä ja on nyt korjattu. Nyt suunnitelmana ottaa käyttöön yöksi kolmosreivi, code ja staysail sekä täysi ballast. Jos tuuli ja aallokko menee yöllä pahemmaksi niin otan käyttöön solentin. In Dieppe we met our friends and got extra crew for the one night passage to Cherbourg. Passage was everything from no wind to lots of wind and from rain to sunshine. On 20th of October we tied the lines to Cherbourg, France, that would be our port for the winter months. Arin terveiset viime yöltä: Tänään A5 ja täysi iso vetänyt hienosti optimi AWA kulmilla. Nyt laskin kulmaan 90 AWA ja menee edelleen lähelle tuulen nopeutta. Tänään Ari kertoi että aika menee todella nopeasti merellä. Välillä on otettu aikaa rentoutumiselle, vaikka kaikenlaista huoltohommaa riittää veneessä ihan koko ajan. Reititystiimin terveiset tältä päivältä: Vielä(kään) ei voi avata shampanjapulloja, mutta kaikki tuuliennustekartat näyttää että Ari on päässyt yli Doldrumseista, ja on nyt kaakkoispasaatissa. 6.7 kn @203° true. Ehkä aamulla voidaan kuitenkin jo juhlia? On nimittäin aika legendaarinen ylitys jos se oli tässä. Ei yhtään alle 100 nm vuorokautta! Puuskat kolmeakymppiä ja melkein menetin spinnun yön jiippi- ja laskutaistelussa. Taistelin kolme tuntia ja sain sen vihdoin alas, hissukseen sitoen purjetta ison takana. Snufferi oli niin jumissa, ettei edes tämän painoinen ja kokoinen kaveri saanut sitä alkuun liikkumaan. Solentista lensi myös toinen läpilatta tässä prosessissa ja Starlinkin servo on entinen, pilotin tehdessä vahinkojiipin kesken hässäkän. Antenni ei enää käänny, mutta toimii kyllä. Toinen Starlink on mukana varoilta. Tämän session jälkeen lepoa ja ja yö pelkällä isolla ja kahdella keulapurjeella. Aamun jiippi ei täydellä isolla ilman codea tms onnistunut kuin tuulen kautta. Jäin sen jälkeen heave to asentoon hoitamaan reivin ja nyt on purjeet tuntien työn jälkeen asennossa. Nyt lepotauko ja sitten katsotaan tuleeko code vai A5 vielä ylös… 2.11. 13.02 ”Aamuyöstä vene teki yllättäen vahinkojiipin ja jäi makaamaan voimakkaasti kallelleen, isopurje barduuna vasten ja avotuulipurjeet mastoa vasten. Pelastusliivit päälle ja kiipesin bunkasta kannelle selvittämään tilannetta. Uusi barska kiinni ja uudella jiipillä takaisin styyran halssille. Silloin huomasin, että styyran peräsin pyörii tyhjää. Rullasin avotuulipurjeet pois laskettelin myötäiseen  pelkällä paaran peräsimellä. Otin huoltokamat mukaan ja kömmin ahtaaseen perätilaan tarkistamaan tilanteen. Styyran peräsinakseliin kiinnittyvä quadrantti oli pudonnut 5 cm ja akselin lukituskiila oli poissa. Kiila löytyi ja työkalujen vaihdon jälkeen vasaroin quadrantin kiilan myös paikoilleen. Kiristin molemmat quadrantit ja nyt kaiken pitäisi olla reilassa.
