“The best thing I ever did was in 1944, and it was a forgery.” These words shouldn’t be inspiring when coming from any creative, but in the case of legendary designer Otto Treumann, they are. Born in Germany to a Jewish family but trained in the Netherlands, Treumann used his artistic abilities during World War II to forge documents to aid people in escaping Nazi rule. As a designer he is best known for his work on the logo of Israeli airline El Al and the logos for the Kröller-Müller Museum and for the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects. I came across his work through the series of stamps he created called Resistance, inspired by three famous statues commemorating the war. Of the three monuments - the Dockworker’ in Amsterdam, ‘Destroyed City’ in Rotterdam, and a bronze figure of a falling freedom resistance fighter at Waalwijk - something about the ‘Destroyed City’ really spoke to me. As an homage to his life and work, I decided to bombard the statue with words of positivity. An affirmation of life and the belief that both love and loss can inspire us to great purpose. ✌️ I realized I never shared a stamp of one of my favorite designers, Jan Bons. He made beautiful compositions with torn paper in vibrant colors, combined with a delicate use of type. This stamp was issued to commemorate the Second World War. The words on the stamp, ‘bezet, geknecht, geteisterd, gebrandschat’, mean – loosely translated – 'occupied, enslaved, ravaged, blackmailed’. In 1984 he was also asked to design a stamp to commemorate the war and the liberation – but that went wrong. He wanted to use a statement by one of the patriarchs of anarchism, Mikhail Bakunin: “I am truly free only when all human beings are equally free.” The postal company did not want to be associated with an anarchist, regardless of the statement. Bons refused to change it, he gave the assignment back and published the designs on his own. Against this versatility there is a certain limitation in the choice of designs. On May 22, 1962, the municipality of Warffum – a small village in the Dutch province of Groningen – connected to the automated telephone network, making it the last place in the Netherlands where manual operation was closed. Based in The Hague and founded in 1798, it collects everything that is published in and concerning the Netherlands, from medieval literature to today's publications. About 7 million publications are stored in the stockrooms, including books, newspapers, magazines and maps.
