On January 18, 1983, Jim Thorpe had his Olympic medals restored, 70 years after they were stripped due to unequal application of amateurism rules in place at the time. Although all Native Americans did not gain citizenship until 1924, Thorpe was the first Native American Olympic medalist in the 1912 Olympics, winning gold in the Pentathlon and Decathlon. #cchisroryIn 1913, a newspaper reported that Thorpe was paid about $2 per game to play summer baseball while he was in college. Although this was common by college athletes in the era and not hidden by Thorpe beforehand, this led to his amateur status being revoked, as well as his Olympic medals and records being voided. This also happened after the timeframe that rules allowed for a penalty to be enforced. He went on to play professionally in football, baseball and basketball. Thorpe was also the first president of what became the NFL. Before he became an Olympic and professional athlete, Jim Thorpe attended the Carlisle School in Pennsylvania, one of many boarding schools opened in the 19th century to separate Native American children from their parents and heritage. There, he played football at Carlisle under Coach Pop Warner, the namesake of many existing children’s football leagues across the country. One of the rivalries was West Point where Thorpe faced off against future general and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. On May 24, 1952, Meher Baba was involved in an accident just outside of Prague, Oklahoma, nearly the midpoint of the United states. Elizabeth Patterson, one of the founders of the Meher Spiritual Center, was driving the car containing Baba and three of His close women disciples when they collided with another vehicle coming over a hill. Baba sustained significant injuries; His left leg was fractured in two places, and his arm and nose were broken. Four of His companions also suffered injuries, including His beloved Mehera, whose skull fractures were life-threatening. The patients were taken to the local hospital in Prague where they were treated with great care, and were eventually transported back to Myrtle Beach to complete their recovery. Elizabeth had a deep conviction that the accident was an unavoidable part of Baba’s plan. And, in His beautiful, inimitable way, Baba let Elizabeth know that the accident was indeed meant to be and that she was meant to be driving the car on that day. In the early 1930’s, soon after Elizabeth first met Baba, He gave her a small pink wildflower that He had picked Himself, and instructing her to: “keep it in a safe place always and mark well the date. One day you will understand its meaning.” It was only after years passed, when she unexpectedly came across the flower in an old Bible, that Elizabeth realized the date in the bible was the date of the accident, exactly twenty years before. To this day, the flower and bible are carefully preserved in Baba’s House at the Meher Spiritual Center. Baba expressed that the Avatar suffers for the good of humanity, that by “burning His own cloak of illusion” He helps others burn theirs, ultimately uniting them with the truth of God. Baba said of the 1952 accident in particular, “The personal disaster, for some years foretold by me, at last happened while crossing the American continent—causing me … much mental and physical suffering. It was necessary that it should happen in America. Dr. Ned Burleson and his family resided in what is now known as the Burleson House, a historic residence situated directly behind the Prague Hospital. This cherished house has been restored and is now home to the Avatar Meher Baba Heartland Center. A few steps along the brick walkway, located on the back side of the Burleson House leads visitors to the Prague Hospital, where Meher Baba received treatment following his 1952 accident. But for followers of Meher Baba, perhaps the most intriguing part of the Prague Historical Museum is the exhibit on Meher Baba, detailing his 1952 accident outside of Prague, along with information on his life and teachings. There is also an interesting medical exhibit exploring the history of the Prague Municipal Hospital, and featuring Dr. Ned Burleson the doctor who cared for Baba and the mandali after the accident. The hospital, where Meher Baba and his mandali recuperated, is located directly behind the Avatar Meher Baba Heartland Center, which previously was the family home of Dr. Ned Burleson. The room where Baba was treated and recuperated for 12 days is now used as a physical therapy room. When it is not in use the hospital staff allows for visitors to sit in the room quietly. The key to the room is labeled “prayer room” by hospital staff. A picture of Baba is on the wall in the room along with words to commemorate his accident and the loving response of the hospital staff and the town of Prague. For those who love and follow Meher Baba the hospital where He recuperated is among the most important sacred sites in the Western world, along with the accident site outside of Prague. The Avatar Meher Baba Heartland Center has enlisted the support of a consortium of dedicated individuals from the larger Baba community. The result of this outreach effort has been the formation of the Heartland Memorial Initiative. The Heartland Memorial Initiative is a vehicle to create synergy and support across centers, groups, and individuals dedicated to preserving and spreading Meher Baba’s message of Love and Truth. The initial priority of HMI is to acquire the sacred sites of Baba’s 1952 automobile accident and the hospital where He recuperated in order to establish a memorial honoring Meher Baba’s sacrifice for the benefit of the whole world. Dr. Burleson was the physician who treated Meher Baba, Mehera, and the other Mandali members who were injured during the 1952 accident outside of Prague. The Heartland Center is comprised of two adjacent residential properties. They include the Burleson House, Julia Margaret’s childhood home, and the Morrison House, former home of Walter Morrison. Mr. Morrison was Dr. Burleson’s friend and a faithful supporter of the clinic founded by the doctor. We are proud to be the host of the Lincoln County Carcass Judging again this year! These calves are kids’ show projects whose career has reached the end.
