New episode of In Defense of Ska with Trevor Dunn (Link in bio) What’s a non-ska band that has been incredibly influential to an entire generation of ska bands? The answer is simple: @mrbungle_us. So today, we dig into Mr. Bungle’s roots, relationship to ska and their unique approach with genre by chatting with their bassist Trevor Dunn. On this episode we focus on the time period when the group released several DIY tapes in the 80s, got signed to Warner Brothers and then released one hell of a major label debut record in 1991. Trevor tells us about the band’s love for Fishbone, Bad Manners and Oingo Boingo. He even mentions a time when Mr. Bungle played with The Untouchables. We dig into their cassette releases: The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, Bowel of Chiley, and Goddammit I Love America!!!$ɫ!!. I usually give Lars Ulrich from Metallica a very honorable mention since “Blackened” and the entire “…And Justice for All” record was the reason I started playing drums. I had the pleasure of chatting with Tim again at Sick New World on Saturday. He said he had heard of my band Taproot, and I reminded him of a couple of times we had interfaced in the past. One of those times which was when he was playing with the Blue Man Group in Vegas, and through my friend and drumming beast Jeff Tortora, I had the incredible honor of sitting in with him during their drum circle warm up, and sitting right behind him while he played the entire show! As always, he was very kind and humble. They say you should be wary about meeting your heroes, but I’m glad this has never been the case with one of the greats! 13 days ago, @atlanticfox24 & I attended Sessanta in Phoenix to experience all of the birthday shenanigans on Maynard James Keenan's big day, as he turned the 6 - O! This was Rae's first time seeing @aperfectcircle & @puscifer live. They had seen @primusville once before when they were younger. Rae loved the show so much! They jumped in excitement when Puscifer played Tiny Monster. They were so happy to finally see APC! They loved seeing Judith perform live. We even freaked out the couple next to us when we yelled with Billy "Fuck Your God" with our middle fingers in the air. Haha! It was a fun show, and it was cool to see all 3 bands intertwine between each other throughout the show. Although Sessanta was really cool, Cinquanta was much better imo. But it's a great show & experience to see. @bioworkz Super stoked to have the opportunity to work on a Sessanta gig poster for tonight’s show at Azura Amphitheater. 3 bands, 1 stage, epic!!! The band wanted a 3 headed monster and I’ve always wanted to draw a Chimera. I had a lot of fun drawing this piece and it was tough not so share this sooner. Hope you guys dig it. The poster measures 24” x 36”, with 200 regular and 75 signed foil variants available at the show.
