I had the pleasure of chatting with Tim again at Sick New World on Saturday. He said he had heard of my band Taproot, and I reminded him of a couple of times we had interfaced in the past. One of those times which was when he was playing with the Blue Man Group in Vegas, and through my friend and drumming beast Jeff Tortora, I had the incredible honor of sitting in with him during their drum circle warm up, and sitting right behind him while he played the entire show! As always, he was very kind and humble. They say you should be wary about meeting your heroes, but I’m glad this has never been the case with one of the greats! Post 858: Roger Taylor (2020) In any other band, Roger Taylor would be the lead singer. Not that that detracts from his incredible drumming. But he has a great rock rasp, a soulful whisper, a nice mid-range. Back in the day, he had an incredible high – he’s lost that ‘Galileo’ high – but that’s natural, those types of notes were never going to last. Nonetheless, Roger Meddows Taylor, drummer and vocalist for Queen is also a great songwriter. He wrote, for example, Radio Ga Ga which was a No.1 hit, making Queen the only band in which all members wrote a number one. (Ringo had a top 10 with Octopus’s Garden in Australia). Post 598: Phil Collins (2017) Back in the 80s he was everywhere. And I mean everywhere. The hits kept coming; he was on TV, he was playing all over the world (including famously playing Live Aid in both the UK and America on the same day) and he cemented his place as a mega star. I think his ‘omnipresence’ was what turned a lot of people off and they couldn’t look past his media reign and focus on the music. And that’s where it becomes a bit of a shame as he is not only a multi-instrumentalist, but he’s also a singer, songwriter and producer. He’s also dabbled in acting a bit, most memorably in ‘Buster’ but that’s another story. I can remember reading a biography that I borrowed from the library back in the 80s as I was interested in learning about his career. What I found out, amongst other things, was that he was a child actor who played drums from the age of five years old. Now that’s pretty impressive. I certainly didn’t start playing an instrument until I was much older than that. I think it was probable that he would end up being a star and after joining Genesis in 1970 as their drummer he would go on to become the reluctant frontman when Peter Gabriel left the band in 1975. It can’t have been easy stepping into those shoes and I think some fans feel that the path the band took from then on wasn’t the same as the original vision of prog rock. I’m a fan of Genesis as well and although I do like some of their early work, it’s the later stuff that I enjoy the most. The influence of Phil within the band made them more commercially successful than they were previously and I don’t think that can be totally discounted just because he’s not Peter Gabriel. W 2010r. gdy miałem 10 lat mój tata kupił mi @magazynperkusista , na którego okładce był Charlie Benante. Pamiętam jak dziś to uczucie, gdy otworzyłem pierwszą stronę a tam była mała wzmianka na temat Joeya Jordisona pod tytułem „Joey Debeściak”. Dotyczyła tego, że Joey został uznany według czytelników magazynu „Rhythm” za najlepszego bębniarza ćwierćwiecza! Od razu zafascynował mnie jego wygląd i wielkie bębny. Musiałem posłuchać jak gra i tak to się zaczęło. Wcześniej słuchałem Metallicy i wydawało mi się, że już ciężej i szybciej grać nie można. Ale przekonałem się, że jest to możliwe. Slipknot za sprawą Joeya pokazał mi co to są blasty, szybkie podwójne stopy i wszelkiego rodzaju młynki i inne przejścia. Był moim guru, idolem i przewodnikiem po perkusyjnej ścieżce grania metalu. Wywarł ogromny wpływ na to kim jestem, kim chcę być i na wszystko co robiłem i robię by stanąć kiedyś na tak wielkiej scenie jak on, grać metal na najwyższym poziomie i czerpać z tego radość. Dzisiaj niestety ta ważna i wielka postać odeszła… Dalej ciężko mi w to uwierzyć, bo jeszcze nie tak dawno próbowałem powtórzyć jego partie grając na poduszkach i gapiąc się na plakat z nim, na tle jego lśniących bębnów… Dzisiaj nagrałem ten skromny tribute dla niego…Wielka strata dla mnie i dla całego świata metalowej muzyki. Thursday Thoughts #2) Another drumming influence (especially when playing ballads) is Nigel Olsson. Nate Morton (another drumming influence and drummer on The Voice TV show) posted a remark on Facebook a couple of weeks ago about loving to play rock ballads....that got me thinking about Nigel. Nigel played drums for Elton John and I loved the way he played the ballads. His spacious fills created the perfect tension and just seemed so musical. My favorite tune was Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me....a perfectly played drum part in my opinion. I mention a Nigel poster and say it was from a Zildjian as but I meant to say Slingerland ad. Crazy stuff..last year @ericakwinchester and I watched “The Wrecking Crew,” one of the coolest music documentaries we’d ever seen. We loved it. Fast forward to today- on the last tour of the day at Sun, there was this couple that was completely into the music history, just loving everything I was saying. Turns out one of them is the man in this photo, Chris Hope, who produced “The Wrecking Crew!” He gave me a copy on DVD, and I told Chris that Hal Blaine, drummer of the Wrecking Crew, was a hero of mine. Hal played on most major hits out of 1960’s LA, and he drums on my 2nd favorite record of all time, “Pet Sounds” by The Beach Boys. Not but a few seconds later @markedgarstuart walked up and informed me Hal had JUST passed away about an hour before at age 90. It’s a wild, cosmic world we live in. Thank you, Chris. I just learned of the passing of a legend, Roy Burns of Aquarian Drumheads, who I had the great honor of meeting in 2012 at PASIC in Austin. It was this moment that after ONE conversation with this humble gentleman, that a little seed was planted and my curiosity of Aquarian started. A couple of years later I met the Aquarian rep and I told him I wanted to just TRY some of their drumheads and he said he could se what he could do-that resulted Roy giving me a phone call...ON MY CELL PHONE!! “James, this is Roy from Aquarian, Chad tells me you want to try my Drumheads-what would you like?” He sent me a full set of Modern Vintage II’s and I WAS SOLD & I have never turned back!! It wasn’t just the amazing heads that are absolute perfection, but it was the Man behind the name that sold me! He was nothing but kind & generous the few times we spoke and his vision & wisdom really show in his drumheads. Today I got to hang out with one of my drumming heroes: @stanton_moore Now, some people say you should never meet your heroes but Stanton was the best. The lesson was incredible: he’s so passionate, engaging and plays like no one else. We work shopped playing in the cracks to get the Radcliffe beat to sit, mines still a bit too polite but I know what to work on now! @lozzicles and I then trekked down to Snug Harbour to catch up with my good pal @kentville_drums and we caught Stanton’s trio. He played his ass off again! The band was fantastic and Stanton could’ve have been a better host. So, my friends, meet your heroes. If they’re half as awesome as Stanton you’ll never forget it. I haven’t been able to wipe the smile off my face and I doubt I will anytime soon! Thankyou Stanton, you’re the best. 🥁🤙🏼🇺🇸
