Today was a brand new day in the pod...new faces, new perspectives, new experiences, new opportunities, new intentions. Intentions that included wanting to grow, learn, get clean, find peace, strength, patience, guidance, help, healed relationships, self-discipline and frankly something different than what life has handed them so far. Everytime we start a new class, I am always filled with nervous anticipation...will they get it, will they want it, will we make a connection? I was always that kid that tried to make sure everyone liked me. I would always put others before myself and even though this might seem like a nice thing to do, I’m here to tell you it’s not. I remember being given the advice when I was young that ‘I’m always going to have higher standards than others which will lead to me always being disappointed with people. And that’s just life!’ So I was pretty much told that life will always disappoint me… what kind of happy life could I live being told that I need to be prepared to always be let down in life?!?? I now know the truth - and that is that you need to make your own happy life, starting with your mindset, your ability to like who you are, and that it’s ok to let others think and feel and be different to you. I can’t even begin to tell you the years I wasted being disappointed in friends and people because I couldn’t control a situation or it didn’t pan out the way I wanted it to. The inner work I’ve done has made me see this, has helped me let go and allowed me to be ok with choosing me and letting others choose themselves. If I’d been given the tools when I was young to choose me over others, if I had been taught to value my thoughts and opinions and wants, and if I knew HOW to say no to others, I would’ve been able to live life feeling content and happy with who I was a lot earlier. This is why it’s important to help our kids build boundaries and to be ok in reenforcing their boundaries. Before I departed from HPD, I played a large part in #ProjectCourage . To see this through, from start to finish was one of the most gratifying achievements I have had. To see those kids happy, was worth every second of this project . I’m grateful that Honda is allowing me to still be apart of this project , as it’s very important to me personally . HAS YOUR TWEEN/TEEN GOT SOME QUESTIONABLE FRIENDSHIPS? When I was leaving primary school and heading into high school, all I wanted was to be accepted and included. I wanted to fit in with everyone and so I was willing to do anything to ensure I wasn’t excluded or didn’t stand out. This need for acceptance continued all through high school and into my adult years and as a result I never really built any quality friendships because no one actually knew the real the me. The real issue wasn’t what others thought of me, it was what I thought of myself. If I couldn’t accept myself, how could others? If I didn’t like who I was, why would others? If you have a tween or teen who is hanging around ‘friends’ who make them not feel good about themselves, or if they’re desperate to fit in with their ‘friends’, it’s time to look a little deeper. This need for acceptance from others really starts from within. Skiing may not seem like a big deal for most, but for us it felt like a scary and unattainable skill for years. ⛷ In the spirit of making 2023 the year of COURAGE, we decided to face the fear and just go for it. Was it intimidating taking your first lesson in your 30s and 40s right next to 3 and 4 year olds? YES 😆 Was it worth it? Hell yeah. The sheer exhilaration gained from learning a new skill, especially one that made you so anxious, can only be described as freeing. Remember that the thing you FEAR is exactly the thing you need to FACE. Entering our old building as an intern in 2018, to her promotion of Lead Clinician, Erin has been exceptional in her capacity as both a therapist and a builder of Project Courage’s strong culture and foundation. We have been lucky enough to see her journey outside of work, as she built a family and became a dedicated mother to two beautiful children. To the person I barely appreciate, I know it's always been hard for you, I never realized that. I ask so much from you and i don't even care to wonder where those things came from and how you got it all for me. Everything that i demand, you always try to provide yet in exchange, I give you nothing. I've never been fair with you. I keep messing with my decisions and it's you that suffer. I chase people and things, that can obviously harm me. I take risks and don't think of you. I turn my back on you a lot of times and don't even mind how painful it is for you yet you still stay there where i left you, waiting for me to come back. And you know damn well that the only time i take my steps back to you is when everything i took risks for didn't work out. That is because you never give up on me even when the world does. It's you, SELF.. The only person that's got me every single time. I put you to places where feet may fail, where you may stumble and fall, where you may get hurt. I put you down only to give glory to others. I silence your thoughts just so others' opinion and decisions are honored. I turn all your hurt, your rants, and complains so people won't get mad at you for being upset about their doing. I trade your heart to win someone else's and they throw it back at my face, all wrecked, all shattered. And no one else picks and mends those broken pieces back together like you do. SELF, I owe you the biggest apology. I owe you the biggest reconciliation. I owe you the biggest treats. And of course, the biggest "THANK YOU." How could i ever make it up to you? I know a dozen cups of protein shake won't make it, nor a galloons of ice cream. Mind satisfying lullabies and music can't too. Para transformar os medos das crianças internadas em hospitais em uma experiencia extraordinária, a Honda desenvolveu um veículo elétrico em miniatura, que comporta crianças de quatro a nove anos. In December @Honda rolled out a heartwarming short and a series of national TV spots for Project Courage - directed by TFTV alum Justin Mashouf (BFA, '08). Honda partnered with Children’s Health of Orange County to create the #HondaShogo, a vehicle for kids that makes their hospital journeys a little less scary and a little more fun. Justin Mashouf is a filmmaker and artist based in Los Angeles. His work editing specials for local Los Angeles news channel KTLA 5, has earned him 4 Los Angeles Emmy Awards, a Golden Mic Award, and Southern California Journalism Award. His award-winning film THE HONEST STRUGGLE tells the story of an ex-gang chief turned devout Muslim reentering society after 24 years in prison. Congratulations Justin!
