Pneumococcal illness is a bacterial infection that may result in pneumonia. Children are regularly immunised against pneumococcal disease, while older individuals and adults with certain diseases also need vaccination. . Pneumococcal vaccination is advised and free for individuals over the age of 70, First Nations people over the age of 50, and persons with certain diseases, such as bronchiectasis. . It is also suggested for those with COPD, although it is not free for all ages; the Lung Foundation Australia is attempting to alter that. You can buy the vaccination, and some insurance may cover the cost. . Our amazing love story that blossomed out of a dark time, through the beauty of the Barnes Jewish Lung Transplant mentoring program, and our transplant stories, were aired on KSDK on Mike Bush’s “Making A Difference” segment this morning. April is organ donation awareness month, and what a beautiful way to share how organ donation saves lives and how those lives saved make an impact on others. Thank you Mike Bush and KSDK for sharing our story, Barnes Jewish Hospital, Washington University Physicians and the BJH Lung Transplant Mentoring Program for such an amazing program. And to the countless other caregivers, including family, friends, nurses, phlebotomists, and other providers helping patients to be the best version of themselves they can be. And even becoming friends as we walk the journey towards health together. #cf #cysticfibrosis #lungtransplant #midamericatransplant #barnesjewishhospital #cfawareness #organdonationawareness

April 27, 2020 — The day my donor saved my life. Always grateful for Trevor’s life. He was only 19 years old & died tragically… yet in those painful moments of saying goodbye, he wanted to donate his organs to save at least eight lives. Mine being one of them. I’m also grateful for this man, my surgeon Dr. Haney, who was willing to perform a third transplant. I was Duke’s sixth patient & I would not be here today if Dr. Haney was not willing to do a new & risky procedure, along with the staff who have taken amazing care over me, throughout the past 10 years, Dr. Reynolds & my coordinator Ali Pearson. The staff at Duke’s pulmonary rehab. The nurses in the hospital for my ICU & step down experience. I’m grateful for my caretaking team: My husband & cousin Brian. My extended loving family. My church & supportive community. And all the many prayers that I believe are behind the many miracles in my life. 💙💚 #donatelife #lungtransplant #cysticfibrosis #grateful #duke #donatelifemonth

After years of trying to get my heart rate under control, I feel like we’re finally making progress in the right direction 🥹 I was beginning to think that I would be forever living in the state of the first picture, but the electrophysiologist (s/o to Gil) is determined to help me. He wants my quality of life to be better. Now, doing things like showering or walking to the car, that usually cause me to have heart rates of 160-170, are causing my HR to only go to about 120! It’s made a HUGE difference in how I feel and I’m finally feeling optimistic and hopeful for the future with this new doctor added to my team 🥹🤍

Every year on April 28, Safe Work Australia commemorates World Day for Safety and Health at Work (World Day) and Workers' Memorial Day to emphasise the importance of having a safe and healthy workplace. This unique day highlights the fact that workplace accidents account for 19% of all fatalities globally. It encourages Safe Work Australia to develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure everyone's safety while working. . According to the most recent statistics from Safe Work Australia, 195 people in Australia were killed on the job in 2022. This worrisome figure emphasises the significance of raising knowledge about workplace health and safety to reduce work-related injuries and deaths. . The International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) 2024 World Day theme is 'impacts of climate change on workplace safety and health'. . Changing weather patterns may pose workplace health and safety (WHS) threats such as heat stress, UV radiation, air pollution, severe industrial accidents, extreme weather events, an increase in vector-borne illnesses, and increased chemical exposure. . The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy establishes a framework for implementing WHS improvements over the next decade, addressing new challenges such as climate change and green economies. This World Day and Worker's Memorial Day, Safe Work Australia is still dedicated to realising its goal of safe and healthy work for everyone. . How do I care for myself while I have sarcoidosis? . The best method to care for yourself while living with sarcoidosis is to follow your healthcare provider's instructions. Keep track of your symptoms and take any drugs as prescribed. . When should I visit my healthcare provider? . If you have new or troublesome symptoms, or if you are undergoing treatment and experiencing concerning side effects, you should contact your healthcare practitioner or schedule an appointment. . It may be beneficial to ask your healthcare provider: . 💚What are the advantages of treating versus monitoring symptoms? 💚How long will it take before I get symptom improvement? 💚How will I know if my therapy is working? 💚Are there any lifestyle adjustments I should make? 💚When should I follow up with you? . Sarcoidosis is an uncommon illness with several potential symptoms. Many instances resolve on their own or with therapy, although persistent sarcoidosis may be controlled with medication and close monitoring. It's worth noting that in certain circumstances, just monitoring symptoms may be therapeutic. You and your healthcare practitioner may devise a strategy that works for your individual situation. . Nebulisation is a medical device that delivers medicine directly into the lungs by inhalation. It is widely used to treat respiratory disorders such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and bronchiolitis, among others. . Nebulisers are intended to deliver drugs in the form of a mist or aerosol that is readily absorbed into the lungs. This strategy is especially useful for those who have trouble utilising inhalers or need larger amounts of medicine. . In reality, nebulisation may be a life-saving therapy for many people with chronic lung conditions by improving breathing, reducing inflammation, and preventing exacerbations. . To achieve efficient disease treatment, patients must adhere to their healthcare provider's recommendations for the frequency and dose of nebuliser drugs. . Finally, nebulisation is a safe and effective medical treatment when used as directed, and it is not addictive. It is important to eliminate misconceptions like this one so that people get the medical attention they need for their respiratory health. . Who will be helped by my donation? . Organ and tissue donation may save and alter the lives of persons who are critically sick or dying in many circumstances. . Below is just one person who received help via a donation. . You may also read about other people's experiences in Donation Stories located at https://www.donatelife.gov.au/all-about-donation/donation-stories . 💚 People who need bone tissue Tendons such as the Achilles tendon, ligaments, and meniscus are all examples of bone tissue. Donated bone tissue may be grafted to assist persons who have lost bone due to cancer, other diseases, or accidents. Bone tissue can mend fractures. It may be used to strengthen hip and knee joint replacements, mend spine curvatures (scoliosis) in adolescents and teens, and fix teeth. You may give bone while you are still living. If you are undergoing a complete hip replacement, you may consent to donate your femoral head so that bone grafts can be utilised. Tendon and ligament donations are used to replace those that have been ripped or irreversibly destroyed, commonly as a result of sports injuries. Due to tendon and ligament transplants, several elite athletes have been able to return to their sport. . How can I avoid sarcoidosis? . There is no method to prevent or lessen your chance of developing sarcoidosis since doctors don't know exactly what causes it. Taking drugs as advised by your healthcare professional reduces your chance of organ damage caused by granulomas. . What is the prognosis for sarcoidosis? . Sarcoidosis' severity varies from person to person. Most patients have a transient ailment that resolves on its own or with therapy. For others, it is a persistent sickness that results in irreversible damage. . In two to three years, about two-thirds of those diagnosed with sarcoidosis will be disease-free (in remission). Löfgren syndrome has a very promising prognosis, with most patients resolving within six months to two years. . Most patients who still have sarcoidosis after three years are likely to have a chronic condition. Only 10% to 20% of those with persistent sarcoidosis will have irreversible organ damage. The most prevalent complication of sarcoidosis in the United States is lung scarring. . What is a person's life expectancy with sarcoidosis? . Most persons with sarcoidosis may expect to live as long as those without it. Sarcoidosis is deadly in just a tiny number of individuals (1% to 5%). . But it is a heavy and difficult thing to receive. Here I am contending with the unfairness of it all, the survivor’s guilt. And in the process, pressing into the reception of the gift. As with life and breath itself, we didn’t earn it, we didn’t deserve it., we just receive it. Which is difficult for me because giving is often easier than receiving. I like to earn, prove and strive. But many of the greatest things in life are given, and we do the challenging work of receiving. So I breathe in that which I could not give myself. And continue to boast about all that has been done for me by God, my donors and their families, my family, doctors and medical staff, and all of you. . #contemporaryart #mixedmedia #lungtransplant #cysticfibrosis

This week is #organdonationweek and it also marks the 5th anniversary of my double lung transplant. It's hard to adequately express how hugely it has changed my life. I'm very grateful to a lot of people especially my donor 💚 and in their honour I want to raise some funds for the Mater hospital and have set up the fundraiser linked in bio above 👆. Grateful too to the team at the Mater, my family, my doctors @theweirclinic and pharmacy @scannellsriverviewbandon for their ongoing support 🙏 #transplant #organdonation #organdonationawareness #giftoflife #transplantsurvivor #lungtransplant https://www.justgiving.com/page/paul-tobin-1713267272405?utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=page%2Fpaul-tobin-1713267272405&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=pfp-share

Living should be a wonderful experience. . I exercise every day, put happiness first, and, out of a strong conviction, I chose to use art therapy to better the lives of others while also promoting and educating about organ and tissue donation. This is also why I signed up to donate my tissues and organs. . I like life's simple pleasures, such as fresh air, nature, relaxation, exercise, and spending time with my family. . When I pass away I want to know that I had a fulfilling life and that my organs and tissues may help others. That is why I registered as an organ donor to make a difference. . Art therapy can be profoundly beneficial for transplant patients in several ways: 💚 Emotional Outlet: Undergoing a transplant can be emotionally overwhelming. Art therapy provides a safe space for patients to express their feelings, fears, and hopes through creative expression. This outlet can help reduce anxiety, depression, and stress associated with the transplant process. 💚 Coping Mechanism: Art therapy equips patients with coping strategies to manage the challenges of transplantation, such as pain, discomfort, medication side effects, and uncertainty about the outcome. Engaging in artistic activities can distract patients from their physical discomfort and provide a sense of control over their situation. 💚 Self-Exploration and Reflection: Through art-making, patients can explore their experiences, identity, and beliefs. This self-exploration fosters a deeper understanding of oneself and the transplant journey, leading to personal growth and acceptance. 💚 Communication and Connection: Art therapy can facilitate communication between patients, their families, and healthcare providers. Artistic expression transcends language barriers and allows patients to communicate difficult emotions or experiences that they may struggle to verbalise. Moreover, participating in group art therapy sessions fosters a sense of community and mutual support among transplant patients. 💚 Promoting Healing and Well-being: Engaging in creative activities stimulates the release of endorphins, which can promote relaxation, reduce pain perception, and boost mood. Additionally, the act of creating art has been linked to physiological benefits such as lowered blood pressure and improved immune function, which can support the healing process post-transplant. 💚 Empowerment and Resilience: Through art therapy, transplant patients can regain a sense of agency and empowerment in their lives. By creating something tangible, they are reminded of their ability to overcome challenges and adapt to new circumstances, fostering resilience in the face of adversity.

Hazard reduction burns are being conducted across Sydney and surrounding regions, including the Blue Mountains, Sutherland, and Hornsby. Smoke from these fires is expected to impact regions around the Blue Mountains, Western Sydney, and Northern Sydney throughout the weekend. Smoke may remain in regions of greater Sydney over the next week due to expected light winds. . You may track planned burning in New South Wales here: buff.ly/3xTRLza . Smoke exposure is harmful to human health. If smoke triggers your asthma, try to remain inside during this period to limit your exposure to smoke. Keep your pain reliever on hand, monitor your symptoms, and treat them as soon as possible. Follow the instructions for Asthma First Aid. . If your asthma symptoms do not improve, immediately seek medical attention or phone 000 (Triple Zero). If the smoke is a trigger for your asthma, contact @asthmaaustralia at FREE 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) to talk with an Asthma Educator. . The @lungfoundation is also asking NSW people impacted by smoke haze, particularly those with health issues, to take care of themselves and be mindful of any additional toxins in the air as smoke settles. . “As a bushfire burns, a mixture of fine particles and toxic gases are released into the air as smoke, and these particles (known as PM2.5) can go deep into the lungs, enter the blood and travel throughout the body,” Ms Bayer said. “Short-term, breathing in these particles can exacerbate existing health issues, impair lung function, and increase hospitalisation and death rates. There is no safe level of air pollution. “ . For further information, please read https://lungfoundation.com.au/blog/looking-after-your-lungs-in-smoky-conditions/ 🌿

How is Sarcoidosis treated? . Sarcoidosis treatment is often aimed at symptom management and organ damage prevention. Because granulomas are regions of inflammation generated by immune cells, sarcoidosis is often treated with drugs that alter or inhibit your immune system. The treatment depends on where the granulomas are located in your body. . Sarcoidosis has no particular treatment, however it often resolves on its own. If the symptoms are not annoying or life-threatening, sarcoidosis may not need urgent treatment. Instead, you and your doctor will closely monitor your symptoms. . Anzac Day is a significant day in Australia's calendar, marked by solemn reflection and tribute. . Anzac Day, April 25, is one of Australia's most significant national holidays. It commemorates the anniversary of the first major military battle conducted by Australian and New Zealand soldiers during WWI. . ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The troops in those armies rapidly became known as Anzacs, and their pride in that designation continues to this day. . On April 25, 1915, Australian and New Zealand troops joined the allied campaign aiming to conquer the Gallipoli peninsula. These were known as Anzacs, and their pride in the term endures to this day. . The Anzacs arrived at Gallipoli and were greeted with heavy opposition from the Ottoman Turkish troops. Their intention to drive Turkey out of the war rapidly became a stalemate, and the fight lasted eight months. . The allied soldiers were withdrawn in late 1915. Both sides sustained large fatalities and faced severe difficulties. More than 8,000 Australian servicemen were killed. . Today, Anzac Day commemorates all Australians killed in military actions. . On this ANZAC Day, my family and I would want to honour and remember the heroism and sacrifice of our servicemen and women who fought bravely to protect our nation. . They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning; We will remember them.🌿 . #TPCH  #TransplantAwareness #DonateLife #lungitudefoundation #OrganAndTissueDonation #TransplantAustralia #thecommongoodau #QueenslandLungTransplantService #LungFoundationAustralia  #LungsInAction #ageilityfit #amtanmedicals #DoubleLungTransplant  #LungTransplant #PulmonaryFibrosis #PulmonaryRehab #InterstitialLungDisease #OrganDonor #LungDisease  #TheGiftOfLife #itonlytakesaminute #DonateALife  #Registertoday #talktoyourfamily #lunghealthaustralia #EveryBreathSheTakes 🌿

Did you know that being a registered donor has a direct influence on families' willingness to donate to the hospital? So, make sure you notify your family and make it clear what you desire. . Have that discussion now so that more Australians may have a fresh start in 2024. . When a family is ignorant of their loved one's intention to donate, just 55% approve. So, after you've registered, make sure you explain your preferences to your loved ones. . To register as an organ and tissue donor, visit https://www.donatelife.gov.au/register-donor-today . This #WorldImmunisationWeek, @lungfoundation wants to ensure that you are up to date on your immunisations. . Not sure? Consult your healthcare professional about which immunisations you should get. . Immunisation protects lung patients against avoidable illnesses and consequences. . Infections like influenza or pneumonia may cause major respiratory exacerbations, hospitalisations, or even life-threatening consequences in those who have respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD, or cystic fibrosis. . Vaccines improve the immune system's capacity to combat these diseases, lowering the risk of respiratory disorders and their sequelae. By remaining up to date on prescribed vaccines, lung patients may protect their respiratory health and general well-being. . Exercise benefits lung health in several ways: 💚 Improved Lung Function: Regular physical activity strengthens respiratory muscles and increases lung capacity, allowing them to take in more oxygen and expel more carbon dioxide with each breath. 💚 Reduced Risk of Respiratory Diseases: Regular exercise can lower the risk of developing respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It can also help manage symptoms in individuals already living with these conditions. 💚 Increased Oxygen Circulation: Exercise enhances the circulation of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, including the lungs, which promotes tissue repair and overall lung health. 💚 Enhanced Respiratory Efficiency: Exercise trains the body to use oxygen more efficiently, making breathing easier during physical activities and reducing the workload on the lungs. 💚 Improved Respiratory Muscle Strength: Engaging in activities like aerobic exercise and strength training can strengthen the muscles involved in breathing, making them more efficient and reducing fatigue. 💚 Better Overall Health: Regular exercise contributes to overall health and well-being, which indirectly supports lung health. It helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces inflammation, boosts immune function, and promotes better sleep—all of which are beneficial for lung function. . In summary, incorporating regular exercise into your routine can significantly improve lung health by increasing lung capacity, strengthening respiratory muscles, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases, and promoting overall well-being.🌿 . #TPCH  #TransplantAwareness #DonateLife #lungitudefoundation #OrganAndTissueDonation #TransplantAustralia #thecommongoodau #QueenslandLungTransplantService #LungFoundationAustralia  #LungsInAction #ageilityfit #amtanmedicals #DoubleLungTransplant  #LungTransplant #PulmonaryFibrosis #PulmonaryRehab #InterstitialLungDisease #OrganDonor #LungDisease  #TheGiftOfLife #itonlytakesaminute #DonateALife  #Registertoday #talktoyourfamily #lunghealthaustralia #EveryBreathSheTakes 🌿

Transplant Nurses' Week is from April 22 - April 29, 2024. . The International Transplant Nurses Society (ITNS) established Transplant Nurses Week to increase awareness of the unique contributions that transplant nurses make in the lives of those with whom they work, particularly their patients. . As awareness of this essential profession expands, International Transplant Nurses Society is devoted to providing additional opportunities for nurses, healthcare professionals, organ donors and recipients, and their families to express their gratitude for the excellent care that transplant nurses offer all around the globe. . By focusing this week on transplant nurses, the @transplantnurses hopes to foster a culture of appreciation and acknowledgement for these committed workers. It encourages people and communities to show their gratitude, whether via words of thanks, gestures of support, or participation in activities that highlight the critical work of transplant nurses. . Finally, Transplant Nurses Week provides an important chance to recognise and appreciate the compassionate care given by these nurses, which contributes to the well-being and success of transplant patients worldwide. . So this Transplant Nurses Week, I'd want to recognise and celebrate transplant nurses throughout the globe for the effect your work has on the lives of the transplant community. Nurses and physicians do an excellent job of reminding us that everyone has a story and deserves to be treated with decency and respect. Throughout an individual's tremendously difficult and life-changing journey, there is always a nice reminder that even the tiniest act may make a significant difference in someone's life. The glass-half-full mentality, resilience in the face of adversity, and optimistic spirit all contributed to a memorable challenge. . For more information, please feel free to go to https://www.itns.org/transplant-nurses-week 🌿
