One survey of 11–16-year-olds in the UK by Be Real found that 79% said how they look is important to them, and over half (52%) often worry about how they look (23). In our survey of young people aged 13–19, 35% said their body image causes them to ‘often’ or ‘always’ worry. While body image concerns affect both boys and girls, research suggests that girls are more likely to be dissatisfied with their appearance and their weight than boys (24,25). In our survey, 46% of girls reported that their body image causes them to worry ‘often’ or ‘always’ compared to 25% of boys. Body image concerns can also affect very young children. One review found studies identifying body dissatisfaction in children under the age of six, though estimates of the degree of dissatisfaction varied widely depending on how it was measured”. One year, we had an airshow with airplanes kids built from scratch; another year , my students created and sold their own toys to the entire school learning essential skills along the way. This resulted in being featured in the book Teachers: A Tribute to the Enlightened, Exceptional, and Extraordinary. I am using that expertise with decades of experience to focus on the process of learning and guiding parents and tweens to grow. My approach combines research + good teaching + my experience + the needs of kids = growth for everyone. Let me help you find your own parenting style. A corner stone of Naturopathic care is Preventative Health - or Wellness. That’s why I have undertaken the training to be an Authorised Facilitator of the Empower Me Within Program. As a mother and as a practitioner, I am passionate about teaching people the skills they need to keep their nervous system balanced, to be resilient when things don’t go to plan - rather than get stuck in fight/flight/freeze. It is also with a heavy heart that every time you turn on the news it is filled with more reports of violence against women, not the mention the women who are silently stuck in places they don’t want to be in. I would never assume anything about an individual, or how they choose to live their lives, or the situations they find themselves in. I believe the problem is systemic, and there are MANY things that need to change across our entire society, and indeed the very fabric of our society. BUT I do believe that if we can teach our girls when they are young to be CONFIDENT to know deep within themselves that they are ENOUGH, that they are STRONG, RESILIENT and POWERFUL, then maybe it goes a small way to protect their future, to know that they can walk away from situations in life, work, relationships that they don’t feel comfortable or safe in, to have the EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE to not feel shame, to be able to confidently reach out for help and support. If 1 in 3 teenagers are already struggling with mental health challenges, then what also carries over into adulthood? I am on a mission of preventative care. To teach girls that they are ENOUGH JUST AS THEY ARE, to understand worry and anxiety, its purpose and how it feels in the body, to BOUNCE back rather than splat! And SO much MORE! I will be delivering the Empower Me Within program across a series of individual workshops so that as many girls as possible can access them.
