Even being a NICU RN, I didn’t fully understand what colic was, other than a crying baby. 🔸REFLUX🔸 Premature babies often have reflux due to their sphincters not being fully developed, but it looks quite different in a premie. Reflux in the NICU is easy to spot, it is arching after feeds, spitting up, sometime projectile, bradycardia episodes. But in a term baby, it may just present as them frequently crying, it may be silent reflux, it may be frequent eating as a way to try to soothe themselves. Em was all of those last three. 🔸MSPI/CMPI🔸 Milk Soy Protein Intolerance or Cow Milk Protein Intolerance seems to be more and more common as I talk to other moms. It can be severe and present as projectile emesis, blood in stool or vomit, diaper rash, eczema, or “colic.” I believe that Em was a mild case, she would be frequently very gassy, her tummy always seemed upset, but she wasn’t vomiting, and she didn’t have any signs of blood. She did however have very stringy/mucousy stools. My pediatrician recommended trying to cut dairy and within a couple of days, she was a much happier baby! It was only then that I realized that I didn’t have an angry baby, her tummy was just so upset! 🔸Foremilk/Hindmilk🔸 Foremilk is the breastmilk that first comes out when baby starts eating, it is higher in lactose and a little more watery. Hindmilk follows later and is richer in fat. I had an over supply and a fast letdown. Together, it meant that Em was getting lots of Foremilk and very fast. She would quickly fill up and be too tired to continue to eat, meaning that she was just getting Foremilk. This can also happen if you switch breasts too quickly, before baby gets the Hindmilk. For Em, the high lactose content was running through her digestive track too fast and giving her lots of gas and explosive green poops. I tried giving her lactase drops for a short period, but when lactose is broken down, it becomes sugars…so Em was suddenly waking more frequently at night! As soon as we stopped that one, she was right back to her old pace. I worked with a Lactation Consultant to regulate my supply, slow my letdown, and start block feeding to help this!

BABY BUDDHA Suction - 8/10 - This pump is more than I would ever expect from a portable pump. This pump is not for the feint of heart though, the expression mode can do a number to you if you aren’t ready for it. But, if you need strong suction to remove milk, this might be the pump for you. In a pinch, this pump could do almost as well as a stationary pump. Size - Compact - This pump is not the smallest, and the attachments that it comes with are not inbra. However, this pump is very hackable and can be modified to use several different systems. I was able to modify mine to work with the Elvie Stride system and the Madela Symphony sets. Sound - 4/10 - This pump is not very discrete, it is quite audible. My husband was able to hear it in another room of our house while I was pumping. Cleaning - 8/10 - Cleaning varies depending on what system you use with your pump. Using the parts that it came with are fairly similar to most. It breaks down into bottles, flanges, and valves. It is noteworthy that the parts that it comes with are not compatible to the common narrow neck bottles like Dr Brown or Madela Cost - $$ - This pump does come with a lighter price tag and was available via insurance for free. Ease of Use - 7/10 - This pump is pretty easy to use. But the roller ball did get sticky with me overtime (and I keep it very clean and away from moisture or dirt). When I contacted customer service, they were a bit difficult to work with. Also, my pump started to change levels on me without any interaction with it. I could watch it just jump from level 1 to 2 to 3 while it was sitting next to me. Portability - 7/10 - Can be quite portable, depending on what system you use. It utilized a lanyard to wear around your neck, but personally, I bought an adhesive clip to attach it and clip to my pants or bra.

As the breastfeeding peer counselor I love to support other mom’s with their breastfeeding goals, and help mothers overcome challenges they may face. I host a Mother-to- Mother Support group the first Tuesday of each month. We meet once quarterly in person, with the other month’s hosted via a private event on Facebook. At these events we discuss a range of topics from your breastfeeding goals, to concerns you may have, and how to overcome barriers you may be experiencing. Our support group is a great place for expecting and breastfeeding mothers to come ask questions and offer support and encouragement to other mom’s in our community. Our next Support Group is scheduled for Tuesday May 7th at noon, at the Livingston County Health Center. At this month’s support group, one of the main topics we plan to discuss will be pumping and flange fitting. If you are a pumping mother or plan to pump breastmilk for your baby after delivery, I encourage you to come learn about the importance of flange sizes and get fitted so that you can have the best pumping experience possible. Almost 16 months and our breastfeeding journey has come to a close. 🤍 Nobody prepares you for all the emotions you feel when you breastfeed your baby [and when you stop]. How mentally and physically exhausting it is. But in the same breath how beautiful and powerful it is to be able to use my body to feed, protect, and nourish my baby. Our journey is something I will cherish most about motherhood. Lowen was a perfect nurser. I’m grateful we didn’t struggle. Along the way my independent girlie self weaned, so I continued to pump.
