DID YOU KNOW? The UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates 😢 I really didn’t think we’d get to 16 months. We struggled from the start and overcame so many challenges. Hallie feeds less frequently and for less duration than Olivia ever did, she’s also a gannet when it comes to food so I really expected her to self wean before 1! She still doesn’t open her mouth very well, so I still experience sore nipples every so often but the journey has been so worth it! The hand grabs, the face strokes, the smirks and giggles, now at the stage of just lifting my top up to help herself🤣 If the health and well-being benefits aren’t enough, the convenience is a massive advantage IMO! As I lay here, just like every other night. I am filled with happiness and the feeling of accomplishment. I have breastfed my three children. It has been 9 years of my life spent providing my body to my boys. I have exceeded my own personal expectation on myself. I felt ready. I’m not entirely sure Noah was ready. I hate to admit it but I didn’t feel comfortable anymore and I selfishly wanted my body back. Noah is now 3 and I managed to feed him and comfort him for his first three years of his life. I surpassed my own personal beliefs and opinions but he’s my baby and I felt as though he needed it. Tonight is two entire weeks without him wanting to comfort himself to sleep. I needed to rip the bandaid off and this may be controversial as he did not handle it well the first two nights. I somehow feel more cherished now that I’m not used as a comforter but snuggled closely instead. I have done it, I have breastfed 3 babies! One to 11 months, one to 15 months and one to 37 months! Unfortunately, this is still outdated advice I hear often so I want to set the record straight! Starting solids “early” to help with weight gain RARELY helps and doesn’t actually focus on getting to the root cause of the issue. It doesn’t support parents and frankly, adds more stress most of the time because parents are have to try and navigate starting solids when they bub just may not be ready. In fact, if they aren’t ready, not only can it make issues worse and cause gut upset, it is actually unsafe. Why doesn’t it help with weight gain? Well, there is actually more energy in breastmilk or formula and it contain more fat than the foods your bub eats (and actually swallows) when they start solids. The current evidence based advice is to start solids around 6 months of age and not before 4 months BUT the main focus is not on age. Instead, we focus on the the signs that they are ready, because all babies are developing at different rates! The signs that your bub may be ready to start solids include: -good head and neck control and can sit upright when supported (it is a myth that they need to sit up unsupported and some bub’s don’t do this until closer to 9-10 months!) -show an interest in food – for example, they look at what’s on your plate, watch you when you are eating, they may reach out for your food -opens their mouth when you offer them food on a spoon -bringing things like toys and spoons to their mouth -starting to lose the tongue thrust reflex (although this one is less important and will disappear over time) Very rarely is a 4 month old ready for solids. It doesn’t mean some bubs won’t be, but for the majority this just isn’t the case.
