Busy day for us! Storm challenges with lots of snow at the house, downed trees, power outages, blocked driveways, and then opening the store to help quite a few people in Columbia this afternoon, received beautiful flower bouquets from @anoccasion, found buckets for new ceiling leaks, then home to cut and remove a fallen tree blocking the drive. A few pictures from Columbia's Annual Equestrian Parade-- I'm sorry I didn't get to see more. I'm always surprised how many people shop during a parade happening just a few feet away! Love the view from our front door, by the way... If you know, you know! ❤️ It was a great parade with many participants, beautiful equines, and it was nice to see so many girls and women riding. I even learned something new from my friends at @sweetwater_farm_and_ranch_co today. Did you know that a red bow tied on a horse's tail is a warning that the horse is a "kicker"? -- a stop sign of sorts-- caution required! We are celebrating our 4th year of offering Onion "sets" to our gardening friends. Reviews from past planters are always stellar, so maybe this year, you can get in on the action, too. I love seeing our baskets filled with these bundles of kitchen love, as it surprises our visitors to see them, and it makes our Mercantile function more like I imagine it would have in the 1850s ❤️ All bundles are $7 ea [great price!] have between 50-70 plants, and you can plant when desired. The energy is stored in the bulb, so feedback has been that even if they "look dead" weeks from now, they perform just fine. Maybe throw them in a few Christmas stockings, or wrap in a pretty package as a hostess or birthday gift. It's an easy garden project to do with kids, and you can make French Onion Soup later... They also make a great deer deterrent! Plant them around your flowers, and maybe Bambi will head to over the neighbors'! Sometimes, the most simple thing is the easiest and best thing, like these hard-boiled eggs. I followed video instructions [that I can sadly no longer find] from a chef at a restaurant called "Egg Shop" in New York City. I figured they would know best. Happily, I had great luck cooking and peeling using the following steps: Add water to a saucepan and bring to a simmer [not boil], poke a small hole in the bottom of each egg with a thumb tack, and add eggs to the water, keeping at a simmer for 10 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon to a bowl of cold water, and add ice cubes to stop the cooking process. When ready to peel, lightly tap the egg all over by letting it gently drop from the palm of your hand to the counter several times to create small fissures in the shell, then peel dipping in cold water as necessary.. Anyone who knows me knows I rarely cook or bake much anymore after opening a grocery store in Columbia [something along the lines of the Cobbler's kids having no shoes... and much to the chagrin of my family]. However, it just so happened that we have all the ingredients in the store to prepare a wonderful recipe printed on the inside of the Bellwether Farms Basket Ricotta package -- "Whole Milk Ricotta, Asparagus & Bacon Tart" and it was perfect! On the table, start to finish in less than an hour. It took much less time to eat most of it--with just enough left for lunch tomorrow. Now I need to try the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Roasted Zucchini with Ricotta and Mint, and the Whole Milk Ricotta Manicotti-- and so do YOU! p.s. So, Dave asked me to get a traditional Chicken Pot Pie for the store... a "good one,... and a big one"... and so I did! Three of us enjoyed this tonight-- Lots of white meat chicken, perfect veggies, yummy sauce, and a double crust-- baked and served in less than 45 minutes with a sprinkling of fresh chopped parsley, and for $14.
