Let's talk polymorpha. ʻŌhiʻa lehua, Metrosideros polymorpha, to be specific. The species name polymorpha means "many forms"; ʻŌhiʻa has several different varieties making it one of the more diverse native hawaiian plant species. Metrosideros polymorpha var. #Macrophylla has characteristically large leaves and grows in typically in in mid-elevation areas such as #HawaiʻiVolcanoNationalPark. Metrosideros polymorpha var. #Incana has distinctive grey leaves with an underside that is somewhat velvety. Flower color for the Incana variety can alternate between red, yellow, and orange. Metrosideros polymorpha var. #Glaberrima has smooth shiny leaves on both the top and bottom side. One distinct variety, #Newellii, is endemic to Hawaiʻi island and only found alongside riparian streams. It has slightly more pointed leaves and red petioles. Metrosideros polymorpha var. #Polymorpha is common in high elevation areas and has a velvety coating on the stem and both sides of the leaves as well as dark red flowers. It’s encouraging to see a New Zealand company supporting the restoration of native forest regeneration in our own backyard and recognising the importance of carbon management. Wili wili trees are some of the most noticeable native trees on the island of Maui. These unique large trees with orange bark blossom with orange, yellow, and green flowers - a beautiful sight to see! Unfortunately most of the trees died off due to an invasive wasp. Now that the pest is under control, the trees can thrive, but need to be propagated in nurseries like ours that are safe from non-native ungulates like goats, deer, pigs and cows. We are so thankful to the volunteers who attended our wili wili seed planting event and helped to plant 500 of these beautiful red seeds. It was wonderful to see our community put their hands and hearts together for the health of our island ecosystem. P R O T E C T I’m using this platform and space for the next little while to draw as much attention as possible to our local environment and the actions you can take to protect it and then start to think more vastly about country and the planet. The road to the left leads to hundreds of hectares of ecologically significant land holdings. The road to the right descends into HVP Hancock Victorian Plantations(self declared) sustainable forestry operations. I’ll try my best to stick to the facts as I understand them. HVP is one of Australia’s largest private timber plantation companies owned by both foreign and local super and investment funds. They currently log over 81,000 hectares of Gippsland. Predominant species of softwood being replanted is the Pinus Radiata, an introduced species from North America. This is sold to sawmills, panel producers and pulp and paper mills in Australia and internationally. One of the neighbouring properties is the Tarwin River Forest - cool temperate primary native rainforest. The current stewards, Victoria and Stuart have identified a population of critically endangered slender tree ferns. This means, “A species facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild” The good folk of Turton’s Creek have educated and considered belief that the slender tree fern is also likely growing on HVP native holdings and without adequate external surveys, no current map exists identifying these. In addition, current forestry exclusion zones are inadequate to ensure the protection of neighbouring native forest. This is all a lot to read and digest. I plan to share additional info as best I’m able to over the coming weeks. Koa is a vital part of the native Hawaiian ecosystem. Through habitat provision and nitrogen fixation, Koa increases habitat resilience for endangered bird species such as the ʻĀkepa and the ʻŌmaʻo, who feed on its leaves and use it as a safe structure for nesting. When reaching sufficient growth, Koa has what is referred to as phyllodes, which are sickle-shaped and protrude from the stem of the compound leaves. Phyllodes help Koa conserve water and streamline light absorption. Auckland 🇳🇿 It was hard to choose the right pictures to represent a city that has so many different aspects. We have had the chance to discover an engaged street art (I have a good collection of those), a volcanic island where the black lava gives birth to a deep green forest, a delicious international cuisine, especially its Asian influence, a galactic mini-golf (with its own hobbiton), beautiful street markets, a feminist library and even it's own fernery (which is really justified in New Zealand). It was also the city where we said goodbye to our van, our disc golf frisbies and our long stay in this fabulous country. During our annual camping trip, we took a 3 hour stroll through the beautiful Hinewai Reserve. It is a privately owned ecological restoration project managed by Maurice White Native Forest Trust that now covers 1250 hectares in the south-eastern corner of Banks Peninsula. Access the visitors centre at the top of Long Bay Road, then explore to your hearts content. We took the East track, then Beech track, along the South, then up the (very) steep East track. We managed to traverse to 3 waterfalls during the walk (and I when I say traverse, I mean it - one of the paths was only recently repaired after the big storms in 2021 and it still required a bit of bush-bashing!) Fun fact: over 60 species of fern grow here under natives including tōtara, mataī, kahikatea, beech, and kanuka. Many native birds also call this forest home, including Pīwakaka (fantail), Korimako (Bellbird), Tūī, Kererū and more. Enabling native species to become a more financially viable option for the forestry sector is one of our long-term projects. Taking micro cuttings, like this Podocarpus totara, and growing them in a climate-controlled greenhouse before putting them outside to harden off has worked well for our first trials. Northland 🇳🇿 The Maoris believe that, at the northernmost point of the country, the souls of the deceased plunge into the ocean to reach the next world. I am fully alive but I still feel I left my kiwi should there. The months have passed and I got used to walking among giant ferns, to hear the kiwi bird scream in the middle of the night, to feel the heavy rain on my shoulders, to live amongst the most precious, grandiose and fragile nature. Just as an exemple, the Kauri trees we have seen on the way are a testimony of the earlier forests. Trees that can reach up to 50m in height and 20m in diameter but are dying worryingly because of a simple human step on their roots. Dad wanted to go for a walk cause he ate to many Easter eggs so mum said if I put something warm on I could go too and I could share my photos with @stuffiescouts and @stuffiescoutrangergus - I hope you like them. 1. Kauri trees are a national icon and are so majestic - sadly many are suffering from horrible kauri die back so we have to clean our paws before walking in the tracks 2. There is an amazing walk way through the trees, my brothers thought it was a bit wobbly and I agree !! 3. If you like sport you might know the New Zealand teams all wear a silver fern on their uniforms - well here is the silver fern in the wild - the top is green but the underside is a beautiful silver 4. We found a kauri - and this is only a baby one - they used to be felled for ship masts but now they are protected 5. I tried to put my paws around but I couldn’t reach - dad tried too but he couldn’t stretch either !! 6. The track is really well maintained but the steps are quite big for little paws 🐾 7. Just hanging around lol 8. I love watching the relaxing stream, we haven’t had much rain so it was shallow and no eels about - maybe after the rain some might come? Have you made rice like this? It’s the number 1 reason I buy coconut milk. 🥥 Homemade curry is a close second. Cooking rice in it adds flavor, good fat and a really fun depth to regular rice. 🍚 We eat it under curry, with stir fry and if there’s leftovers, we eat it with fried eggs for breakfast! 🌴 All you do is replace some water with coconut milk instead. The challenge is that no can of coconut milk is the same. Some are thin, some super thick. We like the flavor and consistency of this one from Native Forest. I get it in cases from Azure Standard on the regular. This is how I make ours. The whole family loves it. • 3 cups rice, rinsed* • 1 can of coconut milk • 2 cans of water • dash of salt Heat and bring to a simmer on the stove. Stir to get any coconut milk clumps out. Lower heat and cover to cook like regular rice until the moisture is gone. The coconut milk can create more of a tendency to burn at the bottom of the pot so keep an eye (or your nose) on it. *don’t skip this part. Rice is dirty when you buy it 🙃 so get yourself a good strainer that allows you to rinse your rice well before cooking! If you’re making more or less rice, experiment with different amounts of milk and different brands, but I would use 1 can for every 2-3 cups of rice and adjust the water accordingly. Our favorite rice for this is the Organic Thai Jasmine from @azurestandard. Comes out amazing!! Also if you’re shopping for coconut milk, be sure to steer clear of the preservatives.l found in some brands. Native Forest is a good one!

Triwe 🌿 (laurelia sempervirens), también conocido como laurel nativo. ✸ Árbol nativo de la selva fría y húmeda del territorio mapuche 🇸🇴, entre Chile y Argentina. Amo su aroma único, dulce y "verde" al mismo tiempo. Es mi aroma favorito de los bosques de este lugar del mundo 💚🌳. Es una de las maravillas de este Wallmapu que habito. Cuando hace 2 años, después de haber pasado años de presión psicológica tratando de cumplir lo que creía cierto en ese momento, dañándome a mí mismo a todo nivel 👉🏼😞 y mientras vivía una dolorosa transición y deconstrucción 💔🏚️, sumado a fracasar en la terapia psicológica tradicional para intentar terminar con las crisis de ansiedad que me aquejaban... 🌿🟦⬜ Llegó a mi vida la medicina mapuche, la cual administró sabiamente la machi que me atendió, y este árbol maravilloso fue uno de los principales lawen (medicina) que estuvo presente en ese proceso.
