Yesterday I had a great time talking via zoom to Liverpool University vet students about handling, restraint, common ailments, diagnostics and treatment for reptiles and amphibians, with a focus on big snakes, lizards with Metabolic Bone Disease, skin complaints and impaction, and amphibian chytridiomycosis. The session included a slide presentation with pictures, videos notes and live links and also live handling demos with a big snake, leopard gecko and my man Prince the bullfrog here, who made his zoom debut as is quite new to us here at Reptiles Etc and still in training! 🐍🦎🐸 The students got to interact with questions and comments, and also got links to the presentation to use for reference, including an additional presentation on husbandry and life support to provide additional context and information for some of more more confusing aspects of reptile care such as selecting and correctly using UVB and how it works to keep reptiles healthy. 🙏Huge thanks to the student society for inviting me to speak, I hope the session was useful! 💫 🤓To book a zoom session for your group or society, wherever you are in the world, drop me a message! 👕On a side note, if you love my shirt and would like one just like it, check out the link in my bio to my tee shop for different colours and designs for budding zoologists, naturalists and eco warriors of all ages, all printed sustainably on organic cotton! ♻️ 😁

IveGotOne! The infamous black and white Argentine tegu (Salvatore merianae) is a nonnative and invasive lizard species found throughout south Florida, parts of central Florida, and even in the coastal plain of Georgia.🦎 As their name suggests, they are from South America. However, being exotic and cool-looking lizards, they’re popular amongst the pet trade industry. Unfortunately, due to releasing them by those who could no longer take care of them in captivity (either get too big or bad temperament) they have been wreaking havoc throughout FL and GA.☹️ They are opportunistic feeders, meaning they will eat just about anything from plant matter, to insects, eggs🥚, and even small mammals and other reptiles. If one ever spots a tegu, please use the IveGotOne app (developed by a UGA alumni🐶) to help track their movement of where they’re present, in order to enforce more state and federal agencies to combat their fast spread! Disclaimer: all tegus seen are handled under a federal permit and should NOT be approached without proper permission #tegu #nonnative #invasivespecies #reptilemanagement #wildlifeconservation #ivegotone #southflorida #reptiles

All the snakes here have a special diet depending on the type of snake. Mr. grumpy here gets fed a defrosted fuzzy mouse once a week. It is important to defrost food in cold water, to prevent bacterial growth. Snakes should also not be fed live, unless they are adults and under supervision, as the prey could cause them serious injury in that enclosed space. To ensure safety whilst feeding, it is important to use tongs and slowly move the prey item in front of them. It is essential to create the illusion on movement as snakes are unable to detect still objects. We follow a protocol of feeding them in transparent plastic containers rather than their enclosure, as it avoids them associating their cage being opened to provision of food. It therefore prevents an aggressive response they might have if the enclosure is opened to be cleansed or during health checks. Once fed, wait for your snake to have fully consumed the meal before handling them back to their enclosure. P.S: Don’t forget to remove your watch • • #cornsnake #feeding #nonvenomous #scales #reptiles #nature #naturelovers #england #america #beautiful #rural_love #wildviewing #baby #workplace #reptilemanagement #heathcheck #filters #playtime #ectotherm #instalikes #like4likes #follow #happy #love

Uromastyx (commonly known as the spiny-tailed lizard) have long nails they use for burrowing and digging. These reptiles range from North-Africa to parts of Asia.
