Did you know, that although the Green Tree Python is similar in physical appearance and characteristics to the Emerald Tree Boa of South America, they are not closely related. In fact, they are from two entirely different families of snakes. The Rainbow Rodent🐿🌈 The Giant Squirrel species are native to India. They have developed a unique purple pattern which, according to some biologists, acts as a camouflage among the broadleaf forest regions they inhabit. The big bad wolf of the serpent world. The Puff Adder has an unsavoury reputation within the African Continent. Though, do they deserve this? Probably not. One of the most successful snakes in terms of reproduction, hunting and survival, the puff adder, descendent of the Viperidae family, is found abundantly throughout Africa, especially the South. This also results in them being responsible for the maximum snake bites in South Africa. Although human-adder interactions are often, they only strike when threatened. Since they aren’t fast-moving and able to hide in the presence of humans, they make themselves known by releasing a loud puffing sound. They do this in order to make themselves known and avoid any further interactions. With their excellent camouflage and superior hunting strategies, prey has little chance of escape. These heavy-bodied snakes are ambush predators and are known to wait long periods of time waiting for prey to come along. Due to their heavy bodies, these adders move in a caterpillar-like motions rather than serpentine. They are armed with long front-hinged fangs capable of delivering large doses of cytotoxic venom (severe necrosis). Although this is rarely fatal to humans, it is extremely painful and requires antivenin to prevent amputations and secondary infections. Along with this, the puff adder is also one of the fastest striking snakes in the world. Recent research (swipe right) has discovered the Puff adder to have high cognitive abilities such as strategic planning. They use this while hunting prey through either lingual luring (use of tongue-flicking) or caudal luring (use of tail movement) in order to deceive prey by mimicking actions of earthworms or caterpillars. It is so amazing to see such developments into understanding snake behaviour and realising that they have intelligence that is comparable to more advanced species. • • #puffadder #viper #snakesofinsta #venom #scales #reptiles #nature #naturelovers #england #photography #wildlifephotography #picoftheday #likeforlikes #follow #beautiful #wildviewing #filters #love #fridaymood #vibes #love #natgeo #wildlife #animalwelfare #animalbehavior #animalbehaviourandwelfare #fyp

Here’s your King, bow down. The longest venomous snake in the world, the King Cobra is ruthless and not to be messed with. These large carnivorous reptiles can grow to lengths of 5.5 metres, and are found throughout India and other parts of South-east Asia. They are also the sole member of their own genus, Ophiophagus, distinguishing them from ‘True Cobras’. In fact, genetic studies have shown the king to be more closely related to Mambas than other Cobras. These Elapids are not considered potent in terms of venom consistency when compared to other snakes such as Mambas or Taipans, however they are known to produce large doses of venom in a single bite. A King cobra can produce enough venom to fill one and a half teaspoons in a single bite. They produce neurotoxic venom which affects the nervous system causing muscle paralysis, leading to respiratory failure if not treated. They are referred to as the King because they are cannibalistic and feed primarily on other venomous and non-venomous snakes. In an unusual turn of events, Kings are actually the few snakes where males are larger than females and will often kill other females after mating or if they are denied this ‘right’. Despite its bad reputation, Kings are quite docile but can become highly aggressive when threatened. They are capable of rising 6 ft off the ground, spreading their hood, producing a growling sound comparable to that of a German Shepard, and striking repeatedly. However they are also the only snakes in the world to show high degrees of maternal instincts such as building nests and guarding their eggs and offspring for a few weeks after birth. This remarkable snake is considered the most intelligent of all snakes and most reptiles, with studies indicating them to show learning behaviours. However since this is not entirely confirmed, I do hope to further this research some day. • • 📸: Shoutout to whoever took this picture. Non-venomous snakes/ Constrictors - here’s the T. Up until today every snake I have held has been NON-VENOMOUS. Unlike the usual venomous species (Cobras, mambas, vipers), they DO NOT possess venom glands or fangs. Instead, they have rows of teeth which are used to grab prey. These snakes include ALL BOAS AND PYTHONS and some species of the Colubrid family. Boas and pythons are some of the largest snakes in the world and are found on every continent apart from Antarctica. In general, pythons are larger than boas with the exception of the Green Anaconda (water boa) which is the largest (not longest) snake in the world. A bite from a smaller species of boas or pythons would do little to no damage (far less than a dog bite), whereas bites from larger species could require medical attention due to the risk of infections. Instead of venom, constrictors produce immense muscle power to overcome prey. Once held onto by powerful teeth, the snake will wrap around its victim using its axil muscles. This creates a pressure so intense, that it begins to squeeze the blood vessels of the prey to a near close. The vessels in the heart soon completely shut off, causing the heart to stop pumping blood and hence cut off blood supply to the rest of the body. So the misconception of victims dying of suffocation is really just a MYTH. Once dead, the snake begins to swallow its prey whole (does not have teeth which allows chewing) with the help of a flexible lower jaw enables the snake to open its mouth nearly 180 degrees. Like all other snakes, constrictors DO NOT chase, attack or kill humans as part of their life cycle. Attacks on humans happen during a forced confrontation, mishandling, threatening or in rare cases if the victim is defenceless (children etc). These snakes are born hunters like any other predators and should be treated with respect. • • #constrictor #snakes #snakesofinsta #natgeotravel #animals #scales #reptiles #nature #naturelovers #wildviewing #love #natgeo #wildlife #snakesofinstagram #wildlifephotography #likeforlikes #follow #photography #natgeowild #happy #instagood #instalike #conservation #awareness #animalbehavior #animalwelfare

Here are 10 animal myths you SHOULD NOT believe: 1. Chameleons change colour to blend in with their environment. 2. Camels store water in their humps. 3. Turtles do not feel pain through their shells. 4. Constrictors (non-venomous Snakes) kill prey by suffocating them. 5. Polar bears prey on penguins in the wild. 6. Snakes are deaf. 7. Lionesses do all the hunting. 8. Running in a zig-zag pattern if chased by a crocodile will better your chances of survival. 9. Porcupines shoot their quills when threatened. 10. The colour red enrages bulls. • • #tanzania #wildabeast #alpha #wildlife #reserve #wildviewing #animalkingdom #animallovers #amazinganimals #nature #africa #africannature #beautiful #love #savannah #views #gamedrive #follow #naturelovers #dayout #natgeo #love #paradise #happy #naturephotography #photography #nationalgeographic #wildlifepic #animalwelfare #animalbehavior #animalbehaviourandwelfare

Venomous snakes have specialised teeth known as fangs which they use to inject venom. Venom is made up of complex proteins stored in glands at the back of the head. Although there are numerous components, venom is classified under 3 main categories: 1. Neurotoxic: affects the nervous system by destroying neurotransmitter and causing muscle paralysis which leads to respiratory failure. 2. Hemotoxic: damages the circulatory system by rupturing red blood cells and disrupting coagulation. This leads to sever internal and external bleeding. 3. Cytotoxic: destroys body cells leading to the death of the organ through sever necrosis. Cardiotoxins and myotoxins are cytotoxins that affect the heart and muscles. No matter the type, all venom contains the enzyme Hyaluronidase (rapid diffusion) Over 2000 snake species are venomous, though only 50 are lethal to humans. Most venomous snakes fall into one of three categories: 1. Elapids: These short, front-fanged snakes include the cobras, mambas, coral snakes, taipans and tiger snakes. They are primarily neurotoxic, however some species contain cytotoxic venom (spitting cobra). 2. Viperidae: With long hinged fangs that fold backwards when not in use, these snakes include the true vipers and pit vipers. Although typically hemotoxic, exceptions include the puff adder (cytotoxic venom). 3. Colubrids: The largest snake family, most of these species are non-venomous or harmless to humans with the exceptions of the boomslang and vine snakes (hemotoxic venom) Usual reminder: Snakes DO NOT attack unless provoked or threatened. However, in the unfortunate circumstance you are bitten, please seek medical help immediately • • 📸: Shoutout to whoever took this picture of a Mozambique spitting cobra. That’s one good looking rodent, whatcha say? Porcupines are the third largest rodent species in the world. They are herbivorous and cover a wide range of habitats from parts to Asia, Europe, Africa and America. Porcupines are covered with over 30000 replaceable quills. These quills are only used as a defence mechanism against predators. Babies have soft quills which typically harden over time. • • #porcupine #rodent #mammals #animals #animalkingdom #europe #africa #america #wildviewing #animallover #nature #predator #prey #naturelovers #nationalgeographic #natgeo #wildlife #vibes #travel #explorethewild #likeforlikes #follow #wildlifephotography #photography #animalbehaviourandwelfare

The baddest🔥 Rattlesnakes are a part of the Viperidae family, known for their infamous tail rattling. This is a warning sign when they feel cornered or threatened, followed by heavy hissing. These snakes possess a potent venom primarily consisting of hemotoxins. Although these bites are not always life-threatening, they cause sever necrosis around the bite, along with internal bleeding. Being a part of the viper family these snakes have large, hinged fangs capable of reaching lengths of up to 1.5 inches. There are over 29 species of rattlesnakes, and this guy here is a Diamondback, native to the continental US. Diamondbacks are considered the largest and most dangerous of all rattlers. • • #rattlesnake #viper #snakesofinsta #venom #scales #reptiles #nature #naturelovers #england #america #photography #wildlifephotography #picoftheday #likeforlikes #follow #beautiful #wildviewing #filters #love #fridaymood #vibes #love #natgeo #wildlife #diamond #wildlifeplanet #wildlifepic #animalbehavior #animalwelfare

Appreciation post🐊 Nile crocodiles are the largest reptiles and second largest crocodilian species after the Salt water crocs. Endemic to Africa, these badasses can grow up to 5 metres in length. Crocodiles follow a social hierarchy where size is crucial in determining dominance. Being ectothermic, crocodiles are unable to regulate their body temperature, leading them to bask in warmer environments to help speed up metabolism and aid in digestion. Niles are my absolute favourite reptile and animal species. It’s so incredible to see these apex predators at the top of their game since the time of the dinosaurs💚😍 • • #crocodiles #crocsofinstagram #animals #wild #predator #scales #reptiles #vibrant #nature #naturelovers #england #uk #africa #beautiful #wildviewing #baby #filters #love #likeforlikes #follow #fridaymood #vibes #love #green #photography #natgeo #wildlife #wildlifephotography #instalike #animalbehavior #animalwelfare

These beautiful green tree pythons range across Australia and New Guinea. Adults can be a variety of green shades, distinguished easily by white lines running across their back. These non-venomous species of the Pythonidae family are powerful constrictors growing up to 2 metres in length. They are primarily arboreal but occasionally hunt on land. Although commonly confused for the green tree boa in South America, they are from different families. Pythons also lay eggs, while boas bear live young. • • #python #nonvenomous #scales #reptiles #nature #wildlifephotography #animals #naturelovers #england #australia #beautiful #wildviewing #baby #filters #love #fridaymood #vibes #squad #love #natgeo #wildlife #likeforlikes #follow #green #vibrant #happy #animalbehavior #animalwelfare
