When Nicky saw his wife Vela arrive for their wedding looking like a Goddess, he didn’t crumble to pieces or tell her she’s gorgeous. He saw her as he sees her any other day. And every day, in rags or in a gown, she is beautiful. “Does it ever happen,” Martina asked, “for younger girls in the tribe to be influenced by a celebrity and start trying to look like her? Dye their hair, copy her clothes or make up, things like that?” “Never.” Pepi was categorical. “We don’t even copy each other.” The Romani see their tribe as comprised of individuals, each one carrying their own spark. The uniqueness of each individual is treated as sacred by the tribe. Martina had her first taste of that when she was still pregnant and did something very typical for Bulgarian culture: started guessing who our daughter might look like. “Girls usually look like the father so she’ll probably have your eyes, your hair,” she said. “Whoever she looks like,” Pepi said, “it will be her eyes, her hair.” This is the big difference between the beauty of a Roma person and the choreographed, painted beauty of mainstream culture. 어제 진짜 오랜만에 문화생활! 연극을 마지막으로 본게.... 거의 12년? 된 거 같은데.... 이태리에서 9천킬로 날아오면서 생각했던거중에 꼭 영화나 연극 뮤지컬.. 하나라도 보고 돌아가야지 했었는데ㅋㅋ 그게 어제였드아아! 연극 <라면> 맛있는 라면을 먹기 위해 물의양,강한 화력,자신이 좋아하는 식재료를 넣는 정성이 들어가는 것을 사랑과 빗대어서 이야기 해주는건데 배우분들 합도 좋았고 내용을 알게 되었지만 다른 배우분들은 캐릭터를 어떻게 해석해서 연기하실지 또 보고 싶어짐ㅋ 인상깊었던건ㅋㅋ 방여사네 분식 메뉴판에 금액이 어린시절 추억의 금액이었던ㅋㅋ 라면 1500원, 즉석떡볶이 2500원 오뎅 1000원(4개), 떡볶이 1000원 튀김 1000원(4개), 순대 1500원 김밥 1000원, 우동 1500원 (어릴때 분식집 금액 그대롴ㅋㅋ) 그와중에 가훈이 '가질 수 없는 너' 인데 중간 브금이 🎶 가질 수 없는 너 ㅋㅋ 너무 즐거운 저녁이었다 👍 #연극라면 #인생은맛있게 #농심

Bulgarians are so proud of having defied Hitler’s orders in WWII by not sending “our Jews” to the Polish concentration camps. We look down on German racism. "Over here, people are cruel," he said. I have only had a glimpse of the hostility and racism he is facing every day. And I feel so much shame for the ignorance of my fellow Bulgarians. So I nodded and kept quiet. But what I wanted to tell him was “We’re cruel to you. But, in smaller ways, we’re cruel to each other too.” My Roma friends are facing a full-blown attack. Their houses were destroyed, their address registration erased, their documents are no longer valid. They were scrubbed off from existence. “It’s like we’re dead people,” a mother said to me recently. When I walk into the Roma ghetto, among people who Bulgarians have been attacking for generations all while acting the scared victim, I see all the things that Bulgarians have erased. The erased humanity. I find it in the ghetto. The erased joy. I find it in the ghetto. The erased freedom and sense of belonging. In the ghetto. The erased people, dead to the system, but more alive than anyone I know. They’re in the ghetto. The Romani never tried to claim any land as their own. They never attempted to carve out their own territory. They never, ever attempted to chase anyone out of their home. They did sometimes steal, but only in extreme situations and only when they believed they didn’t cause permanent harm. They would steal a couple of chickens from farms that had many chickens, where the theft would be seen as a great annoyance but not as a verdict of starvation. They would let their horses graze on other people’s land; knowing that it is the earth itself that would take care of the grass growing again. They would take things that are easily restored, like picking a few apples from a tree. But they would never cut the tree. British Romani Patrick Jasper Lee wrote a book about Roma culture and titled it: “We Borrow the Earth: An Intimate Portrait of the Gypsy Folk Tradition and Culture.” What better way to describe our relationship with Mother Earth? We borrow. We do not own. A saying, often attributed as a Native American proverb, goes: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” This is why the symbolism of the sky and earth in the Romani flag is so powerful. City life in Rome. People always show Trevi fountain, but you don't often see the life around it. And a lot of fountains don't have seating around them. The more common scenario involves threats and violence. The creditors know who you are and where you live. They know who your spouse and children are. Some of these creditors are Romani. They are usually the ones waging psychological warfare and resort to beatings if they have waited too long. The beating is usually described as “a slap or two.” And some of the creditors are ethnic Bulgarians. Their methodology is more mobster-like. They push you into a car, take you out of the city into the nearby mountain, and bring you back with broken limbs.
