Their houses were destroyed, their address registration erased, their documents are no longer valid. They were scrubbed off from existence. “It’s like we’re dead people,” a mother said to me recently. When I walk into the Roma ghetto, among people who Bulgarians have been attacking for generations all while acting the scared victim, I see all the things that Bulgarians have erased. The Romani never tried to claim any land as their own. They never attempted to carve out their own territory. They never, ever attempted to chase anyone out of their home. They did sometimes steal, but only in extreme situations and only when they believed they didn’t cause permanent harm. They would steal a couple of chickens from farms that had many chickens, where the theft would be seen as a great annoyance but not as a verdict of starvation. They would let their horses graze on other people’s land; knowing that it is the earth itself that would take care of the grass growing again. They would take things that are easily restored, like picking a few apples from a tree. But they would never cut the tree. British Romani Patrick Jasper Lee wrote a book about Roma culture and titled it: “We Borrow the Earth: An Intimate Portrait of the Gypsy Folk Tradition and Culture.” What better way to describe our relationship with Mother Earth? We borrow. We do not own. A saying, often attributed as a Native American proverb, goes: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” This is why the symbolism of the sky and earth in the Romani flag is so powerful. 19 marca 2018 (przegapiłam rocznicę, bo szczęśliwi czasu nie liczą), rozpoczęłam nowe życie. Za sobą zostawiłam to, do którego nie pasowałam. Przewidywalny świat, w którym nie mogłam się odnaleźć. Ten z chłopakiem, kotem, mieszkaniem i zajebistą pracą, której było za dużo. Kupowaniem rzeczy, żeby poprawić sobie humor. Weekendami full on, żeby zapomnieć. Nieustannym zamartwianiem się o rzeczy mało istotne. Myślami, że tak ma być, bo przecież wszyscy do tego dążą. Spełnianiem marzeń systemu, zamiast własnych. Najpierw były Filipiny, ale nie trwało to długo, bo mój prawdziwy dom odnalazłam na Bali. Pewnie już wiecie, ale na wyspę trafiłam przez przypadek. Mieszkam tu ponad pięć lat i nie żałuję decyzji. Najpierw Canggu, a kiedy tam dotarło zbyt dużo cywilizacji, przeprowadziłam się do Uluwatu. Od ponad 6 lat żyję jak gypsy, nie dbam o rzeczy i sprawy, o które zabiega większość ludzi. Co chwilę się przeprowadzam, kupuję bilety lotnicze z kilkudniowym wyprzedzeniem, nie planuję świąt, Sylwestra, ani wakacji. Jeśli, ktoś zapyta, co robię za tydzień, odpowiem, że nie wiem. W skrócie - już dawno zapomniałam o strefie komfortu. Czy to jest łatwe życie? Z pewnością nie jest dla każdego. Było wiele, wiele, wiele, wiele sytuacji, w których musiałam sobie jakoś poradzić, ale to wciąż nie jest jestestwo ptaka zamkniętego w klatce. When they say “I’ll mourn you for X days,” this means that for X days they will not shave, shower with soap, listen to music, switch on the television. In their own home, they will follow the same customs that are followed in the home of the deceased, like lighting a candle every day and covering mirrors and the television with blankets. “How do they decide how many days this lasts?” Martina asked. “They just do,” Pepi said, “they choose a number of days that feels right to them, personally.” Expressing this internal feeling by not shaving, not showering, not listening to music or watching television, is a very natural way to bring to the surface the sorrow that rages in the depths of your heart. “This person died. And my life stopped.” But there is more to it than this. It is a strongly held belief in our tribe that if you vow to follow the mourning customs for a certain amount of days and break your vow, then death will soon claim another soul. Because, in its essence, this vow is an agreement to not close the gate between life and death just yet. When the grief is so big, you can choose to stay in this passageway, together with the soul of your loved one. I haven’t done anything!” “It’s probably a notification for wage garnishment,” Pepi said. “Oh,” Nicky said with relief. “I hope that’s it!” Wage garnishment is a horrific thing, but for the Romani, it’s among the lesser evils. When they sign a contract with a loan shark, they are fully aware that their salary will all but disappear if they don’t pay back. This is the preferable scenario. The more common scenario involves threats and violence. The creditors know who you are and where you live. They know who your spouse and children are. If you work in street cleaning, they stop with the car right beside you as you’re sweeping the street, demanding their money by this evening, or else. They show up at your door. If threats don’t work, they beat you up. If you lose your job and have no income to pay back, they start hounding your spouse. Often mothers with young children get their social benefits taken by loan sharks, to cover the debt of their husbands. If you’ve managed to put together enough coins to buy bread, they are after you about that. “You have money for grocery shopping but no money to pay me back?” The solution, save for a miracle windfall, is to take a loan from different creditors to pay the first creditors. Some of these creditors are Romani. They are usually the ones waging psychological warfare and resort to beatings if they have waited too long. The beating is usually described as “a slap or two.” And some of the creditors are ethnic Bulgarians. Their methodology is more mobster-like. They push you into a car, take you out of the city into the nearby mountain, and bring you back with broken limbs.
