New research from @smudataarts shows shifts in nonprofit revenue sources as COVID-19 relief funding dwindles for arts and cultural organizations. Some of the key findings include: Education revenue, a top earned revenue source for arts and cultural nonprofits, remains 33% lower than pre-pandemic levels in terms of inflation-adjusted dollars. Inflation represents an important aspect of this overall picture. Earned revenue overall is recovering but has not fully rebounded in absolute terms or in terms of the percentage of expenses it covers. Greater reliance on contributed revenue remains a trend, with contributed revenue accounting for 61% of total operating revenue in FY 2023. Among major private support groups, only foundations increased their support above inflation. This rise was mainly driven by organizations with a budget size between $500K and $1M. This Saturday April 27th at 7pm, experience the union of two Algerian divas: Fella Oudane, powerhouse singer and darbouka virtuoso, and Esraa Warda, spirited dance artist, in an electrifying performance presenting Algerian music in feminine force. Fella Oudane, hailing from Bab-El-Oued, Algiers, gained fame through duos with Cheb Nasro and upholds traditional Algerian music, including Kabyle, Assimi, and Rai, even from her base in Los Angeles. In 2023, she collaborated with dancer Esraa Warda at the "For the Sake of Dancing in the Street" exhibition by OXY Arts and the Los Angeles Nomadic Division. Esraa Warda is a prominent Algerian-American dance artist in New York who explores socio-cultural themes in traditional Algerian dance. Catch her on PBS's Bare Feet and NPR's Tiny Desk with Bnat el Houariyat. Warda's work has been lauded by the New York Times, VOGUE Arabia, and The Metric, and she was a BBC 100 Women nominee in 2022. At the recent California for the Arts Summit in Sacramento, KDA Creative Corps was recognized as California's "model of excellence" for government arts and culture fiscal allocation! This acknowledgment highlights our commitment to leveraging the power of the arts to transform our communities. We are proud to help inform decision-makers on allocating finances for state cultural arts funding. Assemblymember Vince Fong's recognition on the California State Capitol assembly floor is a testament to our impact. Our one-time California Creative Corps pilot program grant has fueled our efforts to make a real difference in the Central Valleys. A huge shoutout to Kern Dance Alliance (KDA) for spearheading this initiative! It is incredible to see how our programs use the arts to teach, heal and inspire across the region. But our work doesn't stop here! We're committed to advocating for continued support for public arts funding in our region. The fulfillment of witnessing my grand vision materialize is heartwarming. As my time as Lancaster City’s Poet Laureate comes to an end, I am full of gratitude for what I’ve been able to do with the platform. The Poet-Tree Project aims to unify generations through poetry, linking the community and academia via dual residencies— one in the local community and the other at a nearby middle school. Facilitators @stephaniethomascole and @sirdominiquejordan spearheaded workshops for different age groups, fostering connections and creativity. Recently, Sir Dominique Jordan led students to @aconcreterose , a community safe and liberated space encouraging self-expression. The upcoming Poet-Tree Intergenerational Poetry Summit on May 22nd at the Ware Center will unify generations through writing, sharing, and connecting. Attendees will contribute to an art installation, a physical poet-tree housing their collective poems, crafted by artist @keishafinnie . Gratitude extends to the facilitators, whose expertise expanded the project beyond expectations, @lancfound for supporting it with the Beloved Communities Grant, @artsatmu for collaboration, and @nelliganmarci for working with me in the early stages to craft and design a phenomenal grant.
