We landed a little late in Germany and ran our A3 RS flat out on the Autobahn, at times hitting 240km/hr, and we still got passed by Porsches, on the 256km trip to Rothenberg ob der Tauber. Now I am enjoying a fine German Pilsner and some warmth and sunshine as we decompress from a day of travel. The medieval walled city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in lower Bavaria, Germany. It's just so stinkin' cute. So cute, in fact, that this town inspired the illustrations for the village featured in the 1940 Disney film "Pinocchio." There is also the local "Legend of the Master Draught". The Protestant town was sacked by the army of the Catholic League in 1631 and the commander of the army, the Count of Tilly, threatened to burn it to the ground. As the legend goes, he challenged the citizens of the city to down a full tankard of wine in one gulp. If someone could do so, he would spare the town. Well, the Burgermeister (Mayor of the town) stepped forward, gloriously downed the whole tankard in one go and spared the city. The second picture shows the Ratstrinkstube where at the top of the hour, the windows open next to the clock face and crowds can watch as the legend is reenacted. We will be visiting this city on the afternoon of day 3 on our Oktoberfest and Bavaria Tour in 2024. It gets really crowded during the Christmas market season, which can be bothersome due to cars driving through the narrow streets of the small historic village. Rothenberg ob der Tauber is a beautifully quaint and walled medieval village that sits between Frankfurt and Münich. In fact, it is one of only three German towns with a city wall that remains intact. It totally gave me Charles Dickens vibes–you know, if Dickens' stories took place in Germany rather than England. They even still have night watchmen (although they are now ceremonial and for tours rather than protection). If ever you have imagined a medieval Bavarian village in your mind, #Rothenberg is it. Driving to the city feels like any other modern place as you move through street lights and navigate traffic, before parking outside the city walls. Once you step inside, though, it's a whole 'nother world. We stayed until past the golden hour because I just KNEW the colors would become spectacular. I wanted to see it in all its glory. As we stood on the walls facing west, the sun set ablaze and cast all its colors across the vibrant and colorful homes. I will never, ever forget it. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany is so very pretty and a real tourist attraction. This is a place I’ve been wanting to come to for several years and here I am. We were up early and out walking the medieval walls that are very well kept. This is so worth doing if you are in the area. It took us about an hour and half to walk around the whole of the wall and it’s so interesting looking down onto the beautiful buildings below. Rothenberg ob der Tauber 🌲🇩🇪 This is the Christmas villages of all Christmas villages. This was such an authentic experience. Many places were closed during Christmas Eve and Christmas, so we were able to just be there and soak in all the scenery and architecture. We were able to experience true tourist-free christmas markets, not many of the people running the booths spoke English so we relied heavily on our Microsoft translator app. It was extremely helpful app and I recommend using this app if you ever find yourself in a country that is another language than your own. This place has been on my Pinterest board/ bucket list and I finally get to check it off. I’m thankful to Scott for letting me drag him around.
