"Proof is the existence of the impossible" LA is known for it's concrete but almost 700,000 acres of the 3 million that make up LA County are now either the Santa Monica National Recreation Area and the newly expanded San Gabriel National Monument!!! Andc did you know that as much as a whole third of LA is either federal, State, or county/ City open space!!!! Not what you think of when you think of LA? Despite all this protected land and parks LA remains one of the most park poor cities in the USA, meaning many of it's residents can not access open green space within a ten minutes from their homes! Hopefully part of the new grant that was passed as part of the San Gabriel National Monument expansion will be used to help Angelinos get into our amazing mountains to learn more about our ecosystems and to reap the make benefits of spending time in open green spaces. We know it can happen, it just takes resources to be made available to the many organizations already working to create more park access. I had a great time setting up my @laisnotadesert table at an @orvispasaden in-store event this past weekend! The event had opportunities to learn about @californiatrout conservation efforts, fly fishing in the @visitlakepiru and the San Gabriel River, hear from the @usfws , learn about volunteer opportunities in our national forests with @fisheriesresourcevolunteers , and hear some indepth guiding intel about fly fishing in Lake Cachuma near Santa Barbara! I got the compliment this past weekend that bringing together Star Trek and the Southern California landscapes featured throughout made sense because they both represent hope and it made my day to feel understood in my intention behind this series. 😀 . Many think Southern California is all a desert and that desert are places without much life but both thoughts couldn't be further from the truth! Southern California is actually (mostly) a Mediterranean climate, one of only five places in the entire world where this climate exists (the others are Chile, Australia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean), and it is one of the *most biodiverse places in the entire world*. 😮 We have some of the most endemic plants and animals in the entire USA, meaning plants and animals that *only grow right here in California*! Despite tens of millions of people and the intrusion of our mega cities, this biodiversity has persisted! And I find that working to protect what has survived a cause worth fighting for. Southern California does have many amazing deserts which are often used in sci-fi. Despite them often seeming empty and unfriendly to humans in media they are actually full of life and biodiversity! Sure, you don't want to be caught out there without water but people have been living in deserts for as long as there have been people, it just takes knowledge to know how to live out there. Although the thought of limited water alien and scary to many, our deserts are so beautiful and full of life that needs protection from development, mining, and even corporate solar farms (I mean yay solar energy but leave the desert tortoise habitat alone) Both Star Trek and spending time learning about SoCal's biodiversity have gotten me through some times these past few years and it made me really happy to bring them together and even happier when others get it too.bJust some musings on the locations and landscapes that make up the world of Star Trek 🖖 . Unity through colors in the sky. I love the way a good sunset brings Angelinos together online and in the neighborhood. The multiple stunning sunsets and sunrises of this past week we're such a great reminder that we are not isolated here.
