This is a big week for CPC! 🌱 Our annual National Meeting is taking place in San Diego, where our offices are headquartered. So it's only fitting that our #RarePlantoftheWeek is the San Diego Thornmint (Acanthomintha ilicifolia), an annual aromatic herb in the mint family that is endemic to San Diego County and the tip of northwestern Baja California. This imperiled species is held in the CPC National Collection by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (@SanDiegoZoo) and California Botanic Garden (@CaliforniaBotanicGarden), both of which steward orthodox seed collections. As a fragile example of biodiversity in the natural tapestry of California, our conservation partners have shown commitment to saving this rare beauty from extinction. And you can, too! For every $5K raised per plant species, our Board of Trustees will provide $5K in matching funds to bring the species to the full sponsorship level of $10K–doubling the impact of your gift in support of rare and endangered plants! You can sponsor the San Diego Thornmint and take direct action to help conserve this rare plant! How can you not love apricot mallow? Admittedly, I have a soft spot for native mallows and it might have to do with their soft and fuzzy foliage and flowers. Sure they look a little awkward when they’re first planted, but be sure to prune this pollinator plant’s spent flowers and soon you’ll have a beautiful mallow bush🌳 Like most California native plants, apricot mallow needs some water to establish the first year and then just a little supplemental irrigation in the summer - it is a very water wise plant!🤓💧 And you’ll be wise to select this plant to enjoy all the pollinators living it up in your yard!😎🤩🐝🦋 #californianativeplants #socalgarden #pollinatorgarden #turfreplacementprogram #turfreplacementrebate #apricotmallow #sphaeralceaambigua #landscapedesigner #landscapedesign #certifiedcalifornianativeplantlandscaper #sustainablegardening #qwel #waterwisegardening #waterwiseplants

Larkspur ID is complicated, and largely still above our pay grade. Fortunately, location can sometimes steer us in the right directiion. Endemic to California, royal larkspur is named for the deep royal blue of its flowers. But this is larkspur we’re talking about, and it likes to keep us on our toes; at China Camp, it appears in a rare albino form. Thanks to a helpful volunteer at the Turtle Back trailhead and the Friends of China Camp’s wildflower guide, we recognized this bloom as royal larkspur. Without all the help, we’d still be scratching our heads over yet another larkspur mystery! . . . . . . . #royallarkspur #delphiniumvariegatum #caendemic #caendemicplants #californiaendemic #canativeplants #californianativeplants #californiawildflowers #wildflowersofcalifornia #wildflowers #wildflowerseason #chinacampstatepark #chinacamp #castateparks #mycastatepark #marinnature #baynature #ignature #naturegram #naturephotography #naturejournal

Linum lewisii, Prairie Flax, aka Western Blue Flax. Native to western North America, from the central continent's prairies, through the intermountain West, from Mexico north into the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. From sea level in the north to 11,000 feet elevation in the Sierra Nevada. I recall observing it some years ago in Kluane National Park and Reserve, Yukon; it is pictured here in San Diego County, California. Of late there is some interest in the possibility of domestication of Linum lewisii as a perennial oilseed crop. #wildflowersofwesternnorthamerica #floraofwesternnorthamerica

Fuzzy! Pussy ears, Calochortus tolmei. I really love finding any of the many species of Calochortus. There were hundreds of these, possibly more than I've ever seen blooming at one time. Up on a bluff overlooking Abbotts Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore, and I'm lucky I didn't get blown off by the very strong wind. But these flowers are low to the ground, so the wind wasn't affecting them. They were about as big as a half-dollar (does anyone ever see that coin any more?). That is a Goldfields photobombing, and there were a lot of those as well. 4/22/2024 #calochortustolmei #pointreyesnationalseashore #abbottslagoon #IBrakeForWildflowers #wildflowers #nativeplants #wildflowerphotography #californianaturalist #californiawildflowers #californiawildflowerhikes #californianativeplants #calnatshare

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is one of those hidden gems in Napa County that features a perennial creek, feeding a remarkably lush inland redwood forest and some of the best expanses of spicebush (Calycanthus occidentalis) we've seen anywhere. Almost the entire park burned in the Glass Fire, but nature is returning with a vengeance, helped by two wet winters in a row. We did a loop from the day use area, up to the end of Ritchey Canyon, back over Coyote Peak and over to the historic cemetery, for a 9 mile hike. 1) coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and Western spicebush (Calycanthus occidentlis) 2) Diogenes' lanterns (Calochortus amabilis) 3) star flower (Lysimachia latifolia) 4) Parry ceanothus (Ceanothus parryi) 5) bush monkeyflower (Diplacus aurantiacus) 6) Texas paintbrush (Castilleja foliolosa) 7) redwood pea (Lathyrus torreyi) 8) moose horn violet (Viola lobata) 9) Fernald's iris (Iris fernaldii) 10) redwood ivy (Vancouveria planipetala) #bothenapavalleystatepark #bothenapa #californianativeplants #plantnative #nativeplants #nativegardening #californianative

This beautiful garden is the creation of my clients John and Heidi! Its design is inspired by Piet Oudolf, using native California plants instead of temperate wet meadow plants. Heidi has vegetables, fruits and cut flowers for drying also. I've helped them maintain it and given them some advice, but really it's straight out of their brains! I collected seeds from Romneya coulteri on a hillside high above Pasadena. The fried egg flower or Matilija poppy is a California favorite. They will begin to bloom in a couple weeks. Tissue-paper petals surround a bright yellow “yolk” against steely green-grey foliage. A real stunner. I visited the Theodore Payne Foundation nursery yesterday to walk their grounds and snap some photos and came across this Cobweb Thistle (Cirsium occidentale) just growing casually in their parking lot. I think a lot of people would see this and classify it as a native "weed" but come on, even the "weeds" of California are beautiful. Just look at that color and the texture of the flowerhead! I would definitely take this plant over some of the non-native cacti that get thrown into the ground amidst a sea of white marble chips. It's very spiny but its sharpness is only matched by its beauty. The dusting of pollen across the anthers is also amazing. #cobwebthistle #cirsiumoccidentale #californianativeplants #californianativeplant #californianativegarden #spiny #pollinator #pollinatorgarden

volunteer seedling of now-dead 'Dark Star', bronzed after the January freeze but no serious damage. 'Dark Star' died winter 2022 following the December 2021 deep freeze/freezing rain. Location is View Ridge Seattle with direct exposure to northeast wind coming across Lake WA that feels like it's pouring off glaciers of Mt Baker and Glacier Peak. Farewell to spring! The clarkia are starting to bloom. I believe this is Clarkia unguiculata. I got the seeds from a neighbor, and he just labeled them as Clarkia. I have them in Zone 0, which is not supposed to have any vegetation. It's an area underneath wooden stairs connected to our deck. I pulled out a camellia and some other non-native plants last fall based on the recommendations of @calfire. For fire hazard, they recommend that you plant nothing in that zone. So technically I should put in base shale topped with crushed stone. But I have another plan. I had self-seeded Rooreh (Claytonia perfoliata) there, and last fall, I sowed the Clarkia seed I got from my neighbor. The Rooreh is almost finished setting seed. Then I'll pull it all out. When the Clarkia are finished setting seed, I will pull them out as well. So for Fire season, it will be bare. When the rains begin again in the fall, the annual seeds can begin sprouting again. #californianativeplants

This Big Beautiful Bloom is a pleasant new surprise in the garden from chaparral yucca. The stunning bloom stalk over 10 feet tall shoots up quickly within 2 weeks and produces these beautiful flowers. “It is pollinated by the California Yucca moth (Tegeticula maculata); this relationship has become a classic example of symbiosis. Working at night, the female California Yucca moth collects up to a dozen sacks of pollen grains called pollinia and forms them into a massive ball. She then flies to another plant and lands on the ovary of a flower. Standing with her head near the stigma, she inserts her ovipositor into the ovary wall and lays a single egg. She then rubs her pollen mass against the central stigmatic depression, ensuring pollination. The pollinated ovary will now produce many seeds, ensuring an ample food supply for the larva. Although many associations of Yucca and Yucca moth exist, the California Yucca moth and the Chaparral Yucca form an exclusive relationship. After the flowers have been pollinated, the Chaparral Yucca dies, though the stalk will typically stay upright for several more years. Local Indigenous peoples use this plant extensively. Fiber from the leaves is used for sandals, cloth, and rope. Young flowers are edible but may be bitter. The Kumeyaay of San Diego County boil the flowers in water and then pour off the water three times before eating them. The stalk of the plant can be eaten. Fruits can be eaten raw, roasted, or pounded into meal. Seeds are roasted and eaten whole or ground into flour.” 📚- text information from Calscape https://calscape.org/Hesperoyucca-whipplei-(Chaparral-Yucca) 📷- photo by Derek Glas #syvbotanicgarden #californianativeplants
