Spent the day volunteering at the North Carolina Youth Hunter Education Skills State Championship. Phenomenal day! I was on our Hunter Skills Trail, it had 20 stations, each at which the middle or high school student had to answer questions such as what animal made this track or shoot/no shoot or is this a legal means of take or identify this animal/bird. I assure you that as long as we keep our #publiclands and #publicwater accessible and continue to improve habitat, this generation of young people in the ole North state will keep our traditions alive and well.

The Hunting for Sustainability program is in full swing in Utah! We recently held our Range Day workshop with the H4S participants. The main purpose of this workshop is to get the participants familiar with shooting positions that they will realistically encounter in the field. This helps them understand their effective range and skills that they need to continue to practice for taking ethical shots while hunting. The next workshop: Butchering, Packing Meat, and Cooking. Hunting For Sustainability or "H4S" is a program run by Backcountry Hunters and Anglers throughout North America. Here in Utah, our BHA chapter volunteers partner with the @utahdwr to make this opportunity possible. We joined 60+ conservation groups across North America earlier this week in filing letters to urge the @U.S.ForestService and @MyPublicLands (BLM) to immediately prohibit the use of snowmobiles or other vehicles to run down, injure, or kill wildlife on all federal lands they manage. 🚫🐺 To the average citizen, running over coyotes and wolves with a snowmobile sounds inhumane, barbaric, and just plain cruel. But unfortunately, this practice is legal in Wyoming and Idaho (wolves and coyotes), and Montana (just coyotes), where wildlife policy is stacked against wild carnivores. You can learn more about "whacking" in our recent reel about this egregious practice. Both #Wyoming and #Montana had the opportunity to prohibit this practice in 2019 and FAILED to do so. Allowing this practice to continue has emboldened individuals like Cody Roberts to commit his heinous act of running over a yearling wolf in Wyoming before further torturing her in a bar and finally killing her. 💔 Unfortunately, even if Northern Rocky Mountain wolves eventually receive the federal Endangered Species Act protections they deserve (which is essential to prevent decades of conservation work from being undone, and why we’re suing @USFWS), it would still be legal to run over coyotes with snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles. A prescribed fire on the WDFW-managed L.T. Murray Wildlife Area is scheduled to start next week as conditions allow. Prescribed fires on WDFW wildlife areas reduce the risk of future wildfires, reduce the severity of wildfires when they do happen, restore forest health, and improve wildlife habitat. The burn will be limited to 300 acres on the Hutchins Unit in Kittitas County, 15 miles west of Ellensburg. WDFW conducts prescribed fires every spring and fall during a small window of time when the weather is cool but not too wet. Thank you to our volunteers who came out last weekend for our willow planting event with the @eaglerivercoalition at the Brush Creek Valley Ranch and Open Space! Over the course of two days, our volunteers planted 750 willow stakes and 18 cottonwood stakes! 💚 This event was part of an ongoing restoration project on Brush Creek to improve habitat and reconnect the historic floodplain. Last year, volunteers planted willows and cottonwoods on a nearby reach of the stream. Willows and cottonwoods are an important part of the riparian ecosystem. They help to stabilize the riverbank and prevent erosion and provide forage for animals. They also shade the creek, which keeps water temperatures in the creek cooler and means better habitat for fish and other aquatic species. Many of the willows and cottonwoods were planted in the area burned during last week’s prescribed burn, which will help with the stabilization as the area recovers from the disturbance. Reflecting on the 2nd Annual Bears Ears Navajo Youth Trip: As we look back on the incredible journey of the 2nd Annual Bears Ears Navajo Youth Trip, we're filled with a profound sense of gratitude and humility. We had the privilege of partnering with local Indigenous organizations, @riseoutsidecollective and @utahfostercare to embark on a transformative experience with Navajo youth. Throughout the weekend, we immersed ourselves in the teachings of traditional foods and the vital importance of food sovereignty. From the sacred act of sheep butchering to the intricate process of tanning hides, every moment was a testament to the deep connection between the communities and the land they call home. Every step of this experience was guided by a profound respect for the land, the animals, and Indigenous culture.
